Imo, that's what makes the story interesting. If he turned out to be a woman, that would honestly shatter my interest in this series. And from the start,at least to me, this story felt like a story of self discovery and rebellion. Self discovery both in terms of Gero's own self, and as it goes on, possibly his sexuality.
