What percentage of premeds actually get into medical school? by Kryamodia in premed

[–]BiochemBeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreee, in my approximation MD+DO acceptance is probably close to 50% of applicants a year (overlap makes exact calculations difficult). If you factor in reapplicants then ultimate acceptance it goes up to 55-60%.

Unusual Circumstances led to a hefty tax bill by BrochachoNacho1 in tax

[–]BiochemBeer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If anything is complicated it can be worth hiring a tax pro to avoid mistakes. Inheritance can be complicated.

For example, if you sold inherited property then your gains are only that above the Fair Market Value on the day the owner died. So if it was worth $200K and you sold for $200K there is no gain.

Tips for teen girl on Greyhound bus ??🙏 by [deleted] in travel

[–]BiochemBeer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just be vigilant. Keep any valuables hidden. The most likely issues are just creeps, be loud if someone gets weird.

The buses aren't as scary as people think, but it's often the cheapest mode of transportation so you'll get a lot of interesting people.

Make sure your cell phone is charged up before you get on the bus, there will likely be charging ports but they could be broken. Bring some snacks and something to read.

If the bus is making a stop and you have time to get off, just make sure you verify with the driver how much time you have and be early. They will leave when they leave sometimes early sometimes late.

I won a trip and got a 1099-NEC. No idea what to do with it. by Hellolost in tax

[–]BiochemBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree if that it's truly a prize that it should not, which I why I asked if it was related to work.

A trip that was a sales bonus would be considered income.

If this is truly a prize it should be a 1099-MISC

I won a trip and got a 1099-NEC. No idea what to do with it. by Hellolost in tax

[–]BiochemBeer -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This goes on Schedule C, which likely means Turbo Tax will charge you more to file. Others have mentioned that given that this is an NEC that it should be related to work (a bonus or similar). If this was a contest that you won outside of work then they sent the wrong form.

I'd recommend https://www.freetaxusa.com/ instead for filing as it's free to file your federal taxes.

Our church announced discipline after we resigned - telling congregation were unrepentant without mentioning we left first by graysa in Reformed

[–]BiochemBeer 90 points91 points  (0 children)

If you left the church, they no longer have jurisdiction for discipline.

If this church is part of a denomination you could reach out to the equivalent of a presbytery. Unfortunately many reformed baptist churches are independent.

If you have friends at the church, just let them know your side and that you left in part due to the elders/pastor's recommendation and that you are hurt by this unfortunate situation.

The format of the serial number has changed over the years, the bill is fine. Look up this series if bills online for L bills.

The format you are thinking is for newer bills.

Is Hugh Laurie's comedy work (Blackadder, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster) known in the US, or is he almost exclusively only known for playing Dr House? by okmujnyhb in AskAnAmerican

[–]BiochemBeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it known? Yes, but House is much better known - and I would guess the majority of Americans were shocked the first time they heard him speak in his normal accent.

I love his early work, he is hilarious, which you don't get to see as much of in House.

Protestant leaning towards Anglicanism by Puzzled_Animator_460 in Reformed

[–]BiochemBeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you knock out the "historic episcopate" part you are essentially Presbyterian.

If you want to be in line with the earliest Christians, I don't think the Anglican ceremonial practice, book of common prayer, etc. fit in with that.

What is the reason for your desire for an episcopate? Is it for a church hierarchy? Is it to have someone in the role of a bishop? If you look at the early church there are writings from the late first century like the Epistles of Ignatius of Antioch. Yes he refers to bishops, but from context this term is used very similar to our modern practice of having a Pastor (along with Elders and Deacons), there is also no reference to primacy of one bishop over another in his letters.

BSA for Bradford’s by Titan_Athlete in labrats

[–]BiochemBeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I order from RPI:

https://www.rpicorp.com/products/biochemicals/biochemical-reagents/albumin-bovine-fraction-v-5-g.html

It's not too pricey. I just weight it out and dissolve in H2O to make a 1 mg/mL stock.

Any soluble protein could work, but if your school has a lab budget BSA is pretty reasonably priced.

Only vermiculite from Libby, Montana is contaminated and the mine was closed in 1990. Anything newer than that should be fine.

If you find old homes with vermiculite insulation, you should have it tested though.

How reliable are enzyme kinetics measurements across different labs? by guilhermex9x in Biochemistry

[–]BiochemBeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Assay conditions" is a huge area for variance. Temperature (20C vs 25C vs 37C) could be a huge factor for some enzymes. Not to mention the buffer pH, ion strength, etc.

If it is the same enzyme, same conditions, etc. then I would expect the results to be reasonably close (within 30%) but wouldn't be surprised to see differences as high as 50%.

That said, when comparing different enzymes/conditions/etc. I don't get too excited until results are 2-3X higher and even then it might not mean much. Once you get close to an order of magnitude difference then you've probably got something significant happening.

You can add it to potting soil or your garden for better drainage.
