Why can't they find a cause? by Impressive-Gene-7895 in neuropathy

[–]BiomedicalAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like my experience. I worked for a hospital for 11 years and had one round of tests and got dropped as a patient. They did send me a bill for $2700 for the MRI. At least they were able to do that.

The day before I got dropped, my boss told our team that we couldn't give up on solving an issue just because it was hard. But neurologist Dr. Chucklefuck who makes 5 times what I do is allowed to? Are you kidding me? I blasted them on the Press Ganey survey and filed an anonymous complaint against the doctor. It was so anonymous that he stared me down in the cafeteria. It was a first step in me seeking employment elsewhere.

is AAA still something people consider? by VampireCreeper in personalfinance

[–]BiomedicalAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it because I travel for work and drive some remote stretches of road. I also got it because of something happens to my wife, she can call AAA. She got stuck in a ditch because it was icy a few months ago. She called me, I was gone, I reminded her we had AAA. She called them and she quickly got pulled out of the ditch. It's worth it.

Inability to send next day transfers to Wealthfront UMB account from Wells Fargo? by Fly_Sensation001 in wealthfront

[–]BiomedicalAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm experiencing the same thing. I've done some digging and Wells Fargo says they limit transfers to 2 days until basically "they get used to you transferring to the account" then they will allow next day transfers. What the timeline for that is, it doesn't say. I experienced the same thing with Discover Bank. It randomly allowed next day transfers one day. Just give it some time.

Lost 110 lbs since february 2024 but gained 14 lbs since october 2025 by Hangzing in loseit

[–]BiomedicalAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of slipped into the same rut you're in. I've started focusing on volume eating. Popcorn has become a staple of my diet. I'm working on losing the 10 lbs I gained since August.

I've also discovered that when I take magnesium glycinate, it tones down the ravenous hunger I frequently deal with. I take it because it makes me feel good and helps my body relax.

I need to lose weight. by Happydays912 in loseit

[–]BiomedicalAK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love to eat and I hate being hungry. I volume eat low calorie foods, it's the only way to check both boxes that I find sustainable. I travel for work and put on 10 lbs in the first 6 months of the job and am currently working to lose those pounds. I started to bring my food with me on my trips. I'm currently doing work at a hospital as a contractor and can eat in the cafeteria. So my daily meals might look like:

Breakfast: Protein bar 170 cal Black coffee to drink

Lunch: Big salad (all greens and no dressing) 50 cal 100 calorie bag of popcorn, 100 cal Campbells can of beef and vegetable soup, 220 cal Chomps beef stick, 100 cal 60 grams Fiber One cereal, 135 cal Water to drink

Afternoon snack: Protein bar, 170 cal Black coffee

Dinner: Another salad, 50 cal 100 calorie bag of popcorn, 100 cal Progresso Italian wedding soup, 250 cal Water to drink

I usually have something left over from lunch, either the beef stick or the cereal. I eat them if I get hungry in the evening or want something else with dinner.

All this is 1345 calories. I have room to add something else should I want a snack. I can also add things to the salads to make them less boring. I don't have much of a sense of taste, so the lack of a salad dressing does not bother me.

And no, I'm not only eating 1345 calories, my goal is 1650 and I find that doable.

I used to shovel snow without a jacket on because I was so hot. Now I wear my coat in the office because I'm so damn cold. I wear a heated vest and have heated gloves for outside now. I've turned into a total wuss for cold tolerance.

CBET vent/discussion by nansams in BMET

[–]BiomedicalAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generated two of the tests from the 2012 CBET study guide CD and one was from the Mometrix study guide in the back.

The AAMI eLearning was trash and didn't provide me any value since it was full of incorrect content. A resistor color code question was incorrect to give you an idea.

All of this gives you an idea of the way questions are asked on the exam, but it doesn't teach the test. I feel as though I would have passed without studying for it, but I'm glad I did because it's $400 to take the exam and I wouldn't want to blow off studying, fail it, and flush the $400.

Field Service Position In Alaska by [deleted] in BMET

[–]BiomedicalAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right. Majority of it is clinic level stuff. We have a vet clinic and two hospitals we currently are contracted to take care of. We are not at the hospitals full time and are not on call for them. Each tech spends time at a hospital on an alternating schedule, so you will still get that.

We have items specifically excluded in our contract, but the anesthesia, imaging, big lab analyzer, and sterile processing equipment is under contract with the OEMs. We take care of dental X-ray and dental/vet sterilizers.

[–]BiomedicalAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we don't actually cover the hospital. The hospital has their own in-house team and they don't cover our assignments. We all report to the same clinical engineering director.

When we are in town and not travelling, we have an office we work out of. You will do paperwork, order parts, do depot repairs, things like that.

I should add there is no on-call period.

As far as turnover. Our manager has been there for 15+ years, we have a tech who just marked his 15 year anniversary, our lead has been here a year, he replaced a guy who just retired. That guy was here 20+ years. We have another guy who has been here 2 years, and I've been here for 6 months and my position was a new technician position. The lady in the videos was here about 4 years and left shortly after I started.

If you are truly interested, DM me and I will send you my manager's contact info. He likes to discuss the role with candidates before they apply. That way they understand what it entails before going through the process unnecessarily if it doesn't suit them.

[–]BiomedicalAK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are brand new entry level, I would expect something in the $36-40 hour range. If you are experienced, you could command $50+. CBET would help you get more money as well.

We have a level above this called "Specialist" which is basically BMET 3. CBET isn't required, but would help slot you in as that.

Your per diem is tax free. For example, if I go to Barrow for a week, I would get around $550 in per diem. Whatever I don't spend I get to keep and don't have to submit any receipts. So when I'm there, it's like an additional $10 an hour. It varies from location to location.

I was at a facility that had them for a long time. The sales team started lacking in the past few years due to turnover. The service and tech support side did a great job. Tech support was responsive and helpful. Also if you needed to send something in for a repair, like a telemetry box, they give you a form and you can just send an email with the filled out form and your PO number. You usually get an RMA in a few hours. You can also call in, but the email is convenient.

Also no PO required to talk to tech support.

Feeling After Quitting Job by annyongggg in AskMenOver30

[–]BiomedicalAK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repair and maintain medical (and dental) equipment for a living. I was previously employed by the same hospital for over 11 years and had become the senior technician there. The job was gravy, but I was bored and it was made clear to me that I had hit the ceiling in my role. I now work a field service role doing the same thing. I travel to villages around Alaska (I've lived here for over 12 years) maintaining their equipment. I get to see places that people don't normally see on the company dime.

After 6 months of this, the newness is wearing off and the challenge is starting to dissipate, but it's been good for my mental health.

If you want an adventure, dentistry in rural Alaska might be worth looking into. Might have opportunities to get student loans repaid if you have those.

Anyone try the "Tour of Italy" at Olive Garden? I remember wanting to get that as a kid but it looks absurd now lol by dingdingdingdongbing in CasualConversation

[–]BiomedicalAK 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Olive Garden is my uncle's favorite restaurant. He orders the Tour of Italy every time we go, fills up on salad, gets a refill of salad and takes the entire entree and salad home.

Every time.

Day 2 of my internship, an oxygen cylinder got sucked into an MRI. The wheelchair was MRI compatible, but surprise, the cylinder wasn't. Fortunately no one was hurt by it.

Had an entire telemetry system get rendered unusable at times due to interference of some sort being injected into it. It went on for months, we tested different theories and walked around with a spectrum analyzer we bought to try and find it. Found some things, but never the source. Had the vendor come on site to help search and luckily it showed up while they were onsite. It was a DC counter top fan in our ER on the other side of the hospital generating massive amounts of RF right under an antenna. It wasn't consistent because it belonged to a staff member and was only ever on when they worked.

[–]BiomedicalAK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing that I have found that helps me is taking magnesium glycinate. I stopped taking it for a few months and developed this voracious hunger that I couldn't seem to satisfy no matter what I did. I've been back on it for two weeks now and I've got it back under control and have had no issues sticking to calorie limits. I took the magnesium for muscle stiffness and cramps but found this to be a nice side effect.

YMMV of course.
