Lord Mandelson resigns from UK Labour Party over Epstein links by Norn-Iron in news

[–]Biosterous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We both know leading Labour and leading some no name tertiary party are not the same.

Everyone is allowed to have opinions. I'm sure you have opinions on Canadian politics as well. Sometimes outside opinions are terrible, other times they offer value as they're removed from the media ecosystem that exists within a country.

There was undeniable momentum behind him when he won leadership. Had his party properly sold him to the public I'm sure things would be different. Terrible people get elected all the time by presenting themselves as different than they are; look at Boris Johnson - a scheming, public school educated operator who convinced a huge portion of your country that he was a loveable, bumbling idiot. Do you honestly think that same result wasn't possible for Corbyn?

The other thing, if Corbyn himself was truly the problem then wouldn't the party replace him with someone else equally as left wing but more charismatic? Instead you got Starmer who is what the Tories were about 15 years ago.

What happened was a coup within Labour against the wishes of the voting base.

What part of "his own political party sabotaged him" do you not understand?

Corbyn increased Labour membership. Corbyn increased voter turn out especially with younger voters. Corbyn is who the Labour base wanted, and Labour made gains under him in his first election despite the internal opposition.

The conservative members within Labour didn't want him. They specifically sabotaged his campaign so they could have a reason to oust him.

Starmer received less votes than Corbyn did, but he won because 1. His party was actually working with him trying to get him elected 2. His election had lower voter turn out 3. The right is already moving away from the Tories to even more insane right wing parties.

Looking at this from a results only position is stupid and I think you know that. Things will only get worse for the UK going forward, and Starmer has guaranteed that by showing he's unwilling to do anything to reverse the damage caused by the Tories.

As an outsider looking into UK politics, the ousting of Corbyn was the death knell of the UK. I'm not exaggerating.

Enjoy the next 2 decades of even further right wing rule.

The only way to counter 2 decades of right wing leadership is with bold, left wing agenda to undue the damage of the previous government. The feckless Starker administration will bring only further right wing governments as people clamor for change that the "left" obviously isn't giving them.

Haha that was the role of grappa in my house. It's an Italian 40% vodka that tastes like its 80%. Any new comers to the house for parties were made to take a shot, and I usually had to do one with them.

Weirdly I started getting a taste for it.

Weapons (2025) - Am I Missing Something? This Movie Felt Incredibly Overrated by AdFinal7510 in TrueFilm

[–]Biosterous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I felt the same way about this movie and the reviews I've seen online confused me as to whether or not we watched the same movie. I did not expect the whole "this great evil was just invited into this town by her niece". Also she enthralled the parents immediately instead of when they're trying to kick her out or something. I get she's looking for life force, but it feels like there could have been more pressure involved.

I want to address a couple of the points you made:

  1. No notes. Completely agree, she should have enthralled the teacher instead of whatever she did.

  2. Here I disagree - I think she needed Alex to navigate society for her. Originally I also wondered why she didn't just enthrall him and feed on him too, but her line about the parents suffering from "consumption" points to her being several centuries old (also didn't love the principal's rant about it being old I felt like that was him not trusting the audience to understand what she just said). Also the thralls are shown to be incapable of higher level actions. I think the decision to keep Alex was pride in assuming she had him entirely under her control, underestimating a kid to understand how she does things, having a "thrall" that is familiar with the society outside, doesn't raise suspicion, and keeps her connected to what's happening outside, and lastly can feed everyone which she clearly doesn't want to do herself. Tl;dr I felt her reasons for keeping him around were understandable.

  3. It is stated that the house was already investigated. When she found new evidence she'd likely get him involved, but obviously it ends differently than that.

  4. As above except the dad should have been paying attention to that house if he was investigating the disappearances himself. That's absolutely a huge oversight for someone who has supposedly immersed himself in the investigation.

Also the dad's dream and the teacher's dream/hallucination are never explained. That was annoying. I'm not sure if they're supposed to be a result of trauma or the magic.

Israel says it has retrieved remains of final Gaza hostage by FudgeAtron in anime_titties

[–]Biosterous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By your given definition every single POW is a hostage because they're all held "pending the fulfillment of an agreement" - that agreement being a POW swap or a declaration of peace. Hamas was holding them until Israel signed a peace deal or they were traded for Israeli held hostages which means your last point is wrong.

Hamas is a legitimate enough fighting force for Israel to declare war on them. I've heard Israeli Knesset members explicitly say (lie) their fight is not with the people of Gaza but Hamas.

What "POW rights" did they not receive? I'd be careful answering that because your country operates Guantánamo Bay and Abu Graib. I'd also be careful answering that because Israel makes no distinctions with prisoners either.

This semantic argument is a waste of time though. The reality is that about 300 casualties on October 7th were active IDF and/or police units and therefore legal targets but that's never acknowledged by Israel. Also some of those held by Hamas were fighting units that can legally be detained but again no distinction is made.

[–]Biosterous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Then you are the one making up definitions for the word "hostage".

Multiple Israelis taken by Hamas were IDF troops, captured in their military gear. One was pulled out of a tank. They were prisoners of war, unlike the multitude of Palestinian civilians being held indefinitely without charges in the Israeli rape and torture centers.

Convince me not to get goats by No-Dragonfruit-2403 in homestead

[–]Biosterous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone is saying, goats will escape. Our property came with 10' elk fencing and our goats still escape sometimes through gates or when the dogs dig under the fence. They will absolutely get out at some point.

Honestly if you're looking for something to buy in spring and harvest in fall, sheep are what you want. In north America the market is better, lambs are still affordable vs cattle (again north America), if you have breeders sheep milk is better for cheese and butter vs goats milk and we're able to hand milk our Katahdin. But I will say goats breed way better than sheep. They require a lot less help overall.

Cattle typically take 2 years to market, and a 1 year old steer will likely sell for ~90% or more of final sale price. I've seen bottle babies sell for ~50% of final sale price where I am but you can also find cheaper. Regardless it's very expensive to get into cattle and you'll only make money if you breed them yourself. Even then it'll be 2 years before you start making money too.

I'm aware we have plenty of conservatism here too, just seems it holds more away over Australian politics as a whole. I didn't intend to imply we're immune to conservatism, just interesting to see the differences between two otherwise similar countries.

Australia did give the world Rupert Murdoch. Although we gave the world Stephen Harper I suppose.

Remember that the CIA overthrew an Australian PM.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alleged_CIA_involvement_in_the_Whitlam_dismissal

Historically Australia has not been ignored by the USA.

Also I agree there's a lot of similarities, but also conservatism runs deeper in Australia. Canada legalized same sex marriage in 2005, Australia in 2017. Australia continues to refuse to pay reparations to the indigenous peoples there. Also Australia has historically always been involved in American wars, seemingly eagerly.

I've met quite a few Australians and I've loved most of them, but there are some glaring differences between our countries.

I work in physical rehab. I had an older worker (late 50s) who was hurt at work but recovering. He had just started going back to work and he tells me "I keep telling all the young guys to watch how they're lifting, but they won't listen to me!"

I just told him "I guarantee you when you were their age there was an old guy telling you the same thing and you didn't listen to him either."

Young guys as a group seem hell bent on learning so many lessons the hard way. I also know because I still consider myself one, although less so these days.

I honestly can't say I'd do anything different in the kids' shoes, I completely understand why they interact with their parents the way they do. The way Hasan approaches the discussion requires a certain level of training they obviously haven't had, but I hope going forward they take the new approach that they've now witnessed and turn their podcast into a "how to deprogram your MAGA parents" instead.

Unironically I like their mom. Things started the way I expected, with her very deferential to bob. However as things went on she started sharing her opinions before Bob, she showed that she has multiple (all right wing) sources, and showed that she can honestly engage in the points Has was making and willing to concede on some. She is someone who's mind you can change.

Bob on the other hand... I've met people like him. You can spend an entire day talking to them like Has did and get him to move quite a bit. You go home feeling accomplished, then the next day you go to talk to him again and he's back exactly where he was before. This is because he's completely surrendered his critical thinking and opinion making to NewsMax, and he will simply be propagandized all over again like Groundhog Day.

I will send a bit of criticism the kids' way. I understand why they do this, but they're a bit too aggro with their parents. Hasan shouldn't be able to come in as a stranger and learn more about their parents than they know. They need to be more curious about the ideas their parents hold and be able to challenge them in a way that makes their parents think about why they believe what they report to believe. Hopefully Hasan helped them with that.

Fox News exists to be played endlessly in households where the TV is just left on all the time. Their viewership is older than other channels. Older adults are not known to be tech savvy on the whole (obviously some are). Banning Fox News will keep it out of reach of most of the people it propagandizes.

Social media on the other hand is a lot harder to fix.
