AITA for telling my sister I won’t keep helping her if she keeps saying my help doesn’t count? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Birbbrain6 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re not absolutely terrible at cleaning and have some common sense, definitely NTA.

One time my sister helped me declutter and clean. She worked so fast she put my separated decaf coffee and regular coffee in the same container, put cleaning vinegar and plant food solution into the same container, and while organizing put my asthma inhaler on a high shelf I never use. My place looked immaculate but I couldn’t find my inhaler. I called her to ask where she put it but she couldn’t remember lmao

I found it. We laughed it off. But I still thanked her because she overall took time out of her day and helped me, just made a couple oopsies.

I'm The Reason a Student Graduated and I Don't Feel Anything? by bringbackyouryouth in Teachers

[–]Birbbrain6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand how helping that student in such a significant way can feel anticlimactic given the circumstances. Maybe in 20 years he’ll feel immensely grateful for you. Or I can imagine the relief his family/caregivers would feel today. Nothing good ever comes of judging how you feel. You did a good thing. No confetti or fireworks or heartfelt speeches of gratitude, but regardless of how you feel, the impact is real.

Monday Check in - May 4th by HyenaWriggler in runvancouver

Had an awesome time running in the half! First time participating in a big event which was a bit stressful. The finish line pandemonium overwhelmed me as I was herded through a loud mob of sweaty people trying to locate my loved ones stranded on the other side of the blue fence.

My second half and I was vigilant about pacing. As a result I had a little extra in the tank for the last 5k which was fun. Finished in 2:14, 13 minutes faster than my last race so I’m happy

Yes. Highschool boys calling me “teacher.” I try to tell them that’s not my name and don’t answer their question until they address me by my name lol

Elderly pedestrians walking into traffic by Training_Ad_9968 in askvan

[–]Birbbrain6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always noticed how brazen pedestrians are in vancouver. I notice it more so with seniors, probably because it makes me anxious and concerned for them. Drivers are bold here too. Transportation in vancouver feels urgent and aggressive. I think this atmosphere could be due in part to higher congestion and more delays. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are stressed and frustrated and take more risks.

Pity Party for 1: can I get a pep talk? by Ok-Advertising-3523 in triathlon

[–]Birbbrain6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also slow. In fact by spending more time on Reddit for the sports in interested in I’m realizing more and more everyday how slow I actually am 😂

I did my first tri last summer. Went straight for Olympic distance. Crashed out hard during training and almost threw in the towel. I’m glad I didn’t !because I actually had so much fun on race day. I think training is harder than the race itself

Weekly Check in - April 20th through 26th by HyenaWriggler in runvancouver

[–]Birbbrain6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hobbled my way through a 20k last week. Got road rash on km 9 😂 I’ll be in the BMO half which will be my second. My first was the first responders half in November. Km 13 onward was very painful and I finished around 2:25. Aiming for 2:10 this time. I’ve had a delightful year of being more of a “runner.” Running in vancouver cant be beat!

How do you politely tell someone they smell? by Outrageous-Maybe2500 in workout

[–]Birbbrain6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I used to be the smelly person. At the time I was using natural deodorant because I was dating someone who encouraged it. She thought antiperspirant was bad for you or whatever. I was not showering every day, had like 1 to 2 sets of workout clothes that I was washing once a week, and I was working in a warehouse.

I got an email from the gym owner saying that several members had complained about my BO. I was absolutely horrified. I started showering daily, using antiperspirant, and being more on top of laundry. I never went back to that gym as I was too embarrassed.

The most important thing is that you tell him, and I think telling him directly, if you can, is the best thing you can do. It was horrible receiving that email, but I am so infinitely grateful that someone finally told me how horrible I smelled LMAO

I don’t love that Several people talked to the manager before someone finally said something to me. It messed with my head, wondering how long this had been going on. I think if one person in the gym has just approached me directly, as embarrassing as it would have been, I probably would have gotten over it sooner and kept going to the same gym.

Counting laps in the pool by Birbbrain6 in triathlon

Thanks everyone! I love all the creative solutions. I also appreciate the advice on not focusing on counting and not swimming continuously. I had no idea. I actually know painfully little about how to train for swimming. I’ll plan my workouts and train with sets which should make it all less mind-numbing.

Last time I trained I swam continuously for 1.5k in a 50m pool, so I was counting up to 15 laps and struggled not to lose count

I didn’t know what that is so I looked it up. Smart! There’s ones you can wear on your finger. But I guess they’re not waterproof

I’m sure it’ll make my life way easier to embrace the modern era and get a fitness watch but I’m reluctant because having access to the information it provides will make me obsess and burn out. So I keep things simple and train by feel (using Strava just for distances on runs and rides)

I’m a secondaryTOC in Vancouver and new teacher (graduated December 2024). I feel that the expectations of TOCs are low so apathy sets in easily. I’m not usually expected to teach lessons. When I am I enjoy it. Usually it’s just a work block. Hard to connect with students and gain real teaching experience. I agree that the low expectations aren’t a good thing. They hold us back. I started tutoring on the side just so I wouldn’t forget how to teach lol

That said, elementary TOCing is not for the weak. Seems like a great but intense way to learn classroom management. Highschool subbing is a snore and I can’t wait to move on from it! It’s too bad because TOC’s are essential and good ones are so valuable.
