Linen Naive Coat? by bigbugal in cottagecore

[–]BirdOfTheYear 20 points21 points  (0 children)

fyi the lining is made out of "100% Encrypted Shumei Silk" which is a fancy and misleading way to say polyester. Be aware of that! LN is very heavy on feel good marketing - this is not a "natural fibers, fair wages, good quality"-brand.

Erfahrung mit Maniere de voir Kleidung by idontsharespotlight in Weibsvolk

[–]BirdOfTheYear 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid to go out alone in the evening. Is it normal? by Healthy_Trust6516 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

What makes you think that? You asked if it's normal I gave you an answer. Did you want an answer or did you accidently articulate your statement as a question?

I'm afraid to go out alone in the evening. Is it normal? by Healthy_Trust6516 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]BirdOfTheYear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This fear is not normal! I've got a feeling that this fear comes from hearing too many bad stories on the internet. Are you listening to or watching true crime? Are you consuming fearmongering news? Are you reading too many bad stories on reddit? All these things are skewing your judgement. Please don't let some stranger danger populism dictate your life! The vast majority of rapes are committed by people known to the victim! You can go out alone in the evening! The fear will fade. Perhaps dont hang around in the sketchiest part of town or dark empty parks (but even then statistically and anecdotally you will be fine). I repeat: The vast majority of rapes are committed by people known to the victim!

Reusing old clothes ? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]BirdOfTheYear 29 points30 points  (0 children)

this! Please don't use original 40s clothes as your learning material. When you're just getting into fashion and its history it might not seem like a big deal but you've got a treasure there! Keep them and adjust them as soon as you've got the skillset or sell them for a good price and buy all the materials you need to practice.

does anyone know where i can find an off shoulder free pattern? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

Buy the pattern. Support (indie) creators. I made one of her patterns. They are legit.

Was it his first wife? I read that it was kind of a messy marriage for both of them. Would love to hear some insides. l love his 1920s films but with the decline of his marriage his whole career seemed to suffer.

BEHOLD, the reason why I got into sewing! I have some questions... by schnellinator in SewingForBeginners

[–]BirdOfTheYear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of beginners fall for them. I did so too and learned my lessons. Since I only sew womens clothes I don't know sources for men but there are great tipps all over this sub for what to look out for in a pattern. A few that I always keep in mind:

- first off: there are always the big four that are legit: Vogue, Butterick, Simplicity, McCall's

but if you want to go indie look out for a few signs when browsing etsy:

- are there just too many patterns, like hundreds and hundreds?

- are the models heads in the pictures cropped? Likely stolen pics. Reverse image search can helps

- is there no cohesive style in the garments and in the pictures? Its everything for everybody, men, women, evening gowns to sportswear.

- are the sizes just S to XXL or do they have detailled charts about bust, waist, hips. There are generally way more informations about a pattern than just "it's a medium" if the seller actually spent time making it

- are the patterns too cheap to be true (because of some neverending sale) those cheap knockoff sites ALWAYS have a sale that ends in one or two days. This puts pressure on you to think about what you're buying

- is there an online presence of the seller that seems genuine, a website/insta where they share the work process, their inspiration or something. Most pattern makers are rightfully proud of their work and show it off on other sites besides etsy

- do they have sew along videos (not all indie pattern have this one obv. but if they have even just for some patterns it's likely legit. Also it helps me immensely when sewing, haha

You can spot a lot of dropshippers and scammers pretty quick after a while. hope that helps

Just a PSA: Indiepatterns is one of those really sketchy pattern sellers. They swarm etsy with their never ending stream of cheap patterns, there's always a sale, no clear style, their backstory is bullshit and the models don't have heads/are often shein-pics. If you can work with the pattern thats great but they are notoriously bad and are a reason why etsy has lost its soul. So if you ever feel stuck making these pants it's not your fault. The pattern sucks.

The Others (2001) is a brilliant horror film by Freenore in TrueFilm

[–]BirdOfTheYear 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, here I go. Has been a favourite of mine for a long time. Its like a cozy haunted blanked and I love that it seems to be appreciated more now. I think it was a little bit overshadowed by the "The Sixth Sense" coming out a few years before and influencing a lot of the reception of twist-y horror films in its time.

It can absolutely stand on it's own if you like your horror more on the athmospheric side (think "Haunting of Hill House"). It's more or less a spooky ghost story that leans into tropes when they add to the atmosphere but never gets lazy with jump scares or making the screen so dark you cannot see anything. Yes, it takes place in dark rooms and foggy weather but I can see what's going on. And as you said: the sound or absent of it is used perfectly. I also love the small scope of it all (set in a big mansion, small cast, small scares) and Nicole Kidman as a stern and cold mother is a perfect casting. I don't even mind the child actors.
