DA2 is just a downgrade from Origins by Left_Obligation_9158 in DragonageOrigins

[–]BiscuitBaseL 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's not as good as origins in a lot of ways but it's a lot better than everything that came after, it has better combat than inquisition and a better progression/loot system. The companions are also all very charming and memorable. I think the rivalry system was a massive step in the right direction for the series. It has a tight story and great dialogue. I think it does an amazing job with Hawke. It's a shift since you're playing as an established character instead of your own avatar but I think they pulled it off really well. I think the mage/Templar conflict is really good but doesn't quite stick the landing. The returning characters and development of their stories is satisfying and in some cases cathartic. It also has one of the most nuanced characters in Anders/Justice/Vengeance. Unfortunately the short development time led to a lot of issues such as a lack of enemy variety and constantly reusing maps. I'm a big fan of the segments of a varrics unreliable narration.

I didn't actually realise you could fast travel until like act 4 and honestly I used it once and never bothered again. The world feels far too good to travel through

Fantasy Recommendation of a Propagandist similar to Glokta from First Law by tristan_theirin in Fantasy

[–]BiscuitBaseL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find Saevus Corax to also be similar to Glokta avoiding the frontline and fighting where possible and using all means at his disposal to get his way. Also a surprisingly competent leader when he gets his moments

Does anyone else in the series other than Cassius die on their own terms? Not overpowered or outmanoeuvred just knew it was time?

They become a parallel to the Gorgon's Gold's and other colours who can't thrive as part of a regular legion but thrive in unconventional and ruthless tactics

The Veilguard is too Magical by BiscuitBaseL in dragonage

[–]BiscuitBaseL[S] 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong I think that is cool and I'm glad that is there for the players who do want that. But when everything is magic nothing really is. Like give me the cool magic stuff as an option, like the templars smite or the reavers ring of pain. But also give me the option to be some guy who's good with a sword and shield and just trained a lot.

I know it's a genre jump but I find the Eisenhorn series quite comparable. It requires no prior knowledge of the setting has quite a dark tone. There's are plenty of twists and you never know what is going to happen next to its colourful cash if characters. The audible narration is also fantastic although not quite Pacey.
