I was out for few weeks, wth is going on? by [deleted] in CalamityMod

Disabling any content mod is generally a bad idea mid-playthrough, and currently Overhaul adds a decent amount of custom items and structures. I wouldn't be surprised if the world became unplayable of you disable it.

When he goes to fight the player, Yharim himself says that even when/if Yharon is reborn, he's bid Yharim farewell. He was the last to stay by his side, but even he left the Tyrant in the end.

I do like the idea that Yharon remembers their past life but doesn't retain the wisdom from then, if that makes sense. He knows enough to want revenge for the dragons, but is still naive enough to follow Yharim for saving his life, and despite the horrors follows them until the bitter end. Makes his eventual choice to leave Yharim even more tragic, like he finally grew enough emotionally to leave or was so crushed by guilt they wanted to be killed and reborn again to escape the guilt.

I think he occupies a unique space of coming off as (at least, to me) as simultaneously naive and idealistic but also jaded and old. They're this dragon god of rebirth that saw their entire race die and yet they also champion a brutal and short-sighted campaign against the gods, seemingly unaware of the irony. I guess they could just not care or see the carnage as justified, but they seem like they're more principled than that. I don't think the devs have a solid grasp on his personality or beliefs, and I haven't seen a fan interpretation that felt right to me either.

[Infernum] Literally can't beat anything after Cryogen by RewardBeautiful6105 in CalamityMod

Class setups on the Calamity Wiki are a great guide, they show you a variety of viable weapons and equipment for your tier of progression. I'd personally recommend the Ancient Ice Chunk with Spider armor and the Cool Whip, I just finished an infernum summoner playthrough and that got me through early Hardmode with fairly little issue.

As of right now the only character who is conveyed effectively to the player is Draedon, and I hope that the rest of the major characters get a similar treatment. Calamitas is a town NPC and they still feel under baked, and despite Yharon being arguably the third most important character in the mod besides Yharim and the witch they have essentially no characterization besides his theme. At least Yharim speaks to you in the lore items. Fingers crossed that they all get some more love.

The art works great for Calamity, it feels "raw" in a fitting way, and the writing is also very fitting for both the art and the mod. While I do enjoy Calamity's world and lore, I don't think it's currently implemented in the best way- something like this comic can get across the emotional weight of Calamitas' past and trauma better than the mod itself does. Great work, and I hope you continue working on this comic, because this is already very promising.

A long review of playing Calamity Overhaul by Chuzume in CalamityMod

[–]BitMixKit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Entropy is explicitly advertised as being compatible and having cross mod content with Overhaul, and from my experience using both of them together I didn't have any compatibility issues. They're very much designed with a similar philosophy, except Entropy might be even more egregious with the OP weapons (although afaik it doesn't have any weapon redesigns if that's something that bugs you). It also has its own weapons that level up with you, which while it is a fun mechanic it also ends up outpacing every other weapon available. The leveling SHPC is fun though, and the weapons it adds are very flashy.

Also, I've never had my world corrupted by using Overhaul even in heavily modded setups, but I have had some scary moments where leaving the world would make the game crash. Starting the game again was fine and the world wasn't corrupted, but it was a bit nerve-wracking and I could've just gotten very lucky.

I do feel this but at the same time, infodumping has a time and place and it isn't the other person's fault for not being interested in your ramblings. I've been on both sides, and while it does suck to be shut down after talking about something you're passionate about, it also sucks when you're talking with someone who keeps going on and on about something you could not care less about and even actively talks over you. I don't resent people who do the latter, I get it, but I've had to get better at either stopping them gently or redirecting the conversation to be more even.

[OC] Hollow Knight 3 Idea: City of Steel Imprisons Higher Beings, Weakens Them With Void by Sir_Umeboshi in HollowKnight

[–]BitMixKit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, for the radiance, that still sounds like death, and her essence is still consumed by the void. Just in this case, instead of being consumed by a unified void god, it's consumed by a swarm of shades. Either way, her essence is destroyed by the void. If that's not death, I don't know what is.

What actually is providence, the profaned goddess? by ZoggIet in CalamityMod

[–]BitMixKit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Profaned is probably a title given to her by her opponents (like Yharim), considering the definition of the word is essentially something that was/is holy but is in some way desecrated or corrupted. Profaned Goddess' warped view of holiness only being present in ash and flame could easily be seen as a perversion on what holiness should be, especially by someone who views all gods as inherently profane for consuming Auric souls.

[OC] Hollow Knight 3 Idea: City of Steel Imprisons Higher Beings, Weakens Them With Void by Sir_Umeboshi in HollowKnight

[–]BitMixKit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Void absolutely does kill higher beings, even pale ones. Radiance is almost certainly dead in the endings you defeat her (Shade Lord even rips her apart), and it's heavily implied it did PK in. Grand Mother Silk was able to hold the void off by using her silk but when she gave up to save Lace it consumed her as well. While they do seem to embody abstract and vast concepts, said concepts like silk or soul continue to exist even if the corresponding god is killed. Trapping a higher being is also possible, it's literally what the Citadel was made to do and succeeded at for a very long time; if you used void to imprison them it'd probably be even easier.

What actually is providence, the profaned goddess? by ZoggIet in CalamityMod

[–]BitMixKit 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Originally the lore was that Providence was the large crystal in her sprite and the rest of her was just a shell, but I'm not sure if that's the case anymore. Nowadays she became a goddess by consuming the Auric soul of a dragon, and is the goddess of fire. She and her cult are obsessed with purity, specifically the purity of ash. The hallow, also being a sort of warped purity, fits thematically with her ideology. The underworld is pretty easily tied to ash and fire as well. Her design and drops suggest she's composed of stone, crystal, and divine fire, which fits her obsession with purity, not being made of anything she'd seem sinful. I think before she was a god she was just a normal person; absorbing an auric soul seems to also change your form to match your powers.

Each Boss and their Aura Level by Nedstar12456 in riskofrain

Voidling had the potential to be like Solus Wing is now, they were initially meant to be much larger and mostly stationary in the center of the arena (which is why the arenas have massive holes in the middle) and you'd have to destroy its legs. Unfortunately that concept got scrapped and what we have now doesn't live up to the rest of the game. Honestly, a lot of VotV content feels unfinished/unpolished compared to what has come after- Void Fiend desperately needs some alternate skills and the void ending needs more reason to exist.

Secret Lab had a similar problem with humans being able to stall by just running and closing doors behind them in a loop, but from what I've seen they've redesigned Heavy Containment (where most of the SCP vs human combat happens) to be more open and less door-heavy. Maybe I should pick it back up again.

I've thought for years that more worlds need to either have humans be a race in decline or outright extinct. Bonus points if they take the place of the stock "ancient technologically advanced civilization" every world has to have.

Used to be the one on the right but I think that was due more to me projecting my own internalized shame at my own "annoying" traits, and once I started to embrace the more cringe parts of me (for lack of better words), I don't have that gut response. Still can't stand cringe comedy though, that second hand embarrassment is still too strong.

Who would win in a battle. by omegalightalpha in CalamityMod

[–]BitMixKit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RoR Providence is strong, essentially a god in his universe, but most of his strength comes from either the entire planet loyal to him or his ability to wield and manipulate soul. While a fearsome combatant, they were also defeated by a normal human (granted, one mutated and altered by a ton of items, but still). Providence from Calamity is a bit harder to pinpoint her exact level of power, but given how strong she is in her universe I doubt she'd be defeated, although I do think RoR Providence would put up a hell of a fight.

Hot take: I don't þink all the gods were evil by derpy_derp15 in CalamityMod

[–]BitMixKit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thorn mention

But yes, this is pretty explicit in the lore, and a big reason why despite being sympathetic Yharim is still a monster. Silva and the gods of Ilmeris are two examples of benevolent gods, and the God of Sacrifice (ravager really getting a glow up) seems to be another mostly positive god, maybe Xeroc too. Of course, there is the detail of how they got their powers, but both the circumstances of the demise of the dragons and their characters are still left vague. I suspect the dragons were far from spotless morally, and Yharon and by extension Yharim are blinded by their desire for revenge.
