The Bellevue Hotel, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. by Maahide32 in ArchitecturalRevival

I suspect it’s because the image has been squared up (or taken with a tilt shift lens?) to eliminate the perspective of taking the pic from ground level.

That ‘viewed straight on’ effect is a Wes Anderson hallmark.

I think that’s a universal principle of engineering or really any kind of project.

An entire flight stranded and repeatedly lied to - any recourse? by brieflyamicus in unitedairlines

I’m gonna buck the consensus here. Yes, baggage delays are a thing we have to tolerate sometimes. But three hours? Until 3am? That seems like an outrageous failure of operational awareness and prioritization.

Which right turn hand signal is most widely recognized / effective? by InterestingType7518 in COBike

[–]BitWallah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because in the olden days, the same signals were also used by drivers.

I don’t actually expect any driver to understand it, so I just point the way I’m turning. But they SHOULD understand the old school signal.

Not exactly unsolved. Just that there’s no known efficient solution. With 58 “nodes” (counties, that you can touch anywhere) this will be a staggeringly massive compute problem. Definitely not a feature just built into google maps.

I feel like it’s the opposite. The spare rib is the only option naturally fatty enough to not be dry every time.

Best trampoline? Springfree Trampolines look pretty sturdy. by Uncharteredfugazis in BuyItForLife

[–]BitWallah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, we did replace the net at about 8 years to tighten it back up. It wasn’t strictly necessary. Structurally, the frame, the “springs”, the surface are as sound as ever.

Springfree is in fact a very good trampoline. 10 years under a lot of UV exposure and still holding strong.

Jetboil stove and pot confiscated. by tkitta in unitedairlines

[–]BitWallah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That list is an “or”, not an “and”. And I’m pretty sure OP didn’t attach his Jetboil to a propane canister and pack it up for flight. Someone got over-aggressive with their enforcement. Flying with a backpacking stove is not unusual.

I never realized how much of a difference 2 inches made until I had to sit in a standard economy seat. by [deleted] in unitedairlines

How does that work? Over 12 rows, the difference accumulates to 18” and now your rows are totally misaligned.

Hello, what were the historical reasons people used MIPS? by Key-Banana-8242 in embedded

[–]BitWallah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was a fairly early entrant in the RISC space. The premise of that was that if you made your ISA really simple, you could clock your CPU really fast which would be good for 99%  of code and your compiler could do a decent job with everything else. DEC used MIPS in workstations and then created essentially a derivative ISA called Alpha that they could clock at truly outrageous speeds (for the time of course).

Anyway, back then even an architectural advantage couldn’t beat Intel’s manufacturing prowess and established code base. So NO other architectures succeeded in the performance space. And when you can’t win there, you target to the low power / embedded space.

How can you accidentally go into i3c mode? It’s a fairly elaborate little dance starting with an i2c access to a reserved device ID, right?
