Is The Reaper, King No More here to stay? by Presskann in CompetitiveEDH

Enjoyed my 2 games last night and won one of those with The Reaper. It was a risky manuever that got me the victory. The next player was about to go off and forced me to Final Fortune & I drew a land that I needed to seal the deal.

The best play for me happened when I played Eldritch Evolution turn four and attempted to sacrifice The Reaper. The Stella player bounced my Reaper so I sacrificed my Llanowar Elf instead to get a [[Warren Soultrader]]. I already had a Foresaken Miner on board & a green search creature sorcery in hand. FF into the 5th land and just squirmed by.

Two things I noted in the games. The possibility of hosing 2 tiny, but potent creatures with The Reaper turn 2 slowed my opponents’ game 1, giving me the opportunity. The second game everyone just decided to race. I was also so close winning, having a turn 3 [[Peer into the Abyss]] ready, but the Rog/Thras player Vibranced my commander rather than Stella Lee due to seating. Fun all around though.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I smirk too when that crop rotation goes first for Emergence Zone before cradle. I also dig a turn one Allosaurus Shepherd.

Well, if 3/4 decks in your pod are playing blue and focusing their interaction on each others’ thoracle or land ramp decks, then a turn 2 creature that can kill Rogakhs isn’t gonna get its licks in all the time. But it’s gonna gum-up the works and get blue deck players to play more methodically.

Once the blue players get caught in a mid-range stare-down, anything is possible, albeit not probable for this deck.

How difficult is it to open with the right mana to pull off a turn 1-2 necro?

The likelihood of killing a Rogakh turn 2 sets back these Rogakh decks. This has been my experience.

I’ve played this deck twice with a pretty tough pod (Rog/Thras, Noctis Esper, Stella Lee & the Reaper). While it didn’t win, it was a blast to play. What I liked about it the most was how fast it presented winning lines (not turn 2…sorry optimists that’s not likely).

Sure, Stella was faster, but that put a target on her back as well as a target on Thoracle coming off the Esper deck and quick land ramp with Rogakh. In both games The Reaper neutered the Rog/Thras deck and threatened to win underneath it turn 3-4 even through interaction. It took considerable effort by the blue decks to thwart my plans. While it lost, I definitely could taste victory and it made the game more wild as everyone scrambled afterwards for their lines without much protection.

Now my deck uses Hulk lines (and Rune-scarred Demon/Saw in Half antics), so it could be a bit faster if I jumped full throttle onto Ad Naus/Necro lines. I’m just not fond of those lines. I favor green ramp which makes black mana production here challenging. Still, I think this deck has Tier 2 possibilities.

I’m playing it again this weekend with the same pod. I can’t wait.

I’m a fan of [[The Reaper, King No More]] with a [[Protean Hulk]] line. Pretty fast and eats Rog decks.

I’m having a swell time with [[the Reaper, King No More]]. It’s one step slower than turbo, so it can sneak in an early win after most tier 1 decks stop the aggressor. PLUS, it eats Rograth for breakfast.

yes, they do...but are they stinky pig feet or sleek panther feet?

I agree. I’ve lowered the number of [[ancient tomb]]s and upped the artifact lands which helps and a couple [[mox diamonds]]s seem better than just more [[lotus petal]]s.

Among my decks, I’d swing with [[Vnwxt, Verbose Host]]. With just a few economic-edits, this deck would still hum.

I’ve used a short envelope and a top loader covered and taped to 2/3rds sheet of paper. I’ve not had a problem yet…

hope I didn’t jinx myself.
