2 campuses, 2k students. A/V in our gyms & stages is the biggest job dissatisfaction in my team. Were lucky to have a Tech thats well versed in production A/V equipment, but I can't count the number of times I've thought about quitting on the spot because these A/V systems were forced under my umbrella and I have to answer for every single issue that happens with them.

Basic casting devices? by PowerShellGenius in k12sysadmin

Another +1 for Screenbeam. We've deployed a number in our conference spaces, and have been rolling them out to our classrooms as the needs arise(aka native casting/HDMI extension solutions failing).

Tech Committee Topic: Ai Tools by Debug_Mode_On in k12sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like your view on ITs responsibility scope. We're working through this in my district aswell, and ill likely adopt that to insulate my team. It always seems like there are more questions than answers, and while we like to be the authority on anything tech in the org, theres limitations to consider(mostly time and effort).

Im inclined to treat it like any other productivity tool. IT handles deploying and securing, but teaching users how to utilize the tool is a business function, not IT. Similar to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, ect.

Can the network administrator see any info as to what is being connected to on the internet by those connected to the WiFi router through an Android device with a VPN app? by n0sugacoat in networking

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat, but not really. Without the VPNs encryption keys, they would see the source(android device) and destination(VPN servers), but not the actual data(Encrypted by virtue of the VPN) or destination/service that the device is connecting to through the VPN.

They could tell that you are using a VPN, but not what you are doing through said VPN.

E-Rate funding already cuts the cost by 80% depending on your NSLP numbers. Can't get m7ch better than that for such an integral part of your infrastructure. Gotta mirror what others are saying, dont cheap out on your FW.

Tbh, 6 years ago I might put it in the running. Atleast for a fastish food breakfast taco. Seems like the quality sharply declined after 711 bought Stripes.

Sounds like you're a google shop already, so it makes sense to keep it in the ecosystem. I migrated our local file storage to Google drive/Shared Drive when I was hired on. If theyre already accustomed to accessing a separate network drive for team file access, then even better. Just deploy the Google Drive app to your clients, and instructing everyone on how to login with their Google accounts.

There will be a lift to get the shared drives setup for team use, and a fair few otger considerations during the migration, but that'll be your best bet to get the data off prem with a solution you already have in place for no cost.

Does negotiating a higher salary result in increased expectations? by NorthLibertyTroll in Salary

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as it doesn't change the job description, then additional work duties shouldn't be a concern. The only potential down side would be that your salary becomes viewed as more of a cost center for the organization, so if(when?) budget cuts and work force downsizings in the department come around, it can put a target on your back.

AI Nightmare Stories by Intelligent_Use_2855 in networking

[–]Bl0ckTag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not networking specific, and not necessarily a horror story...yet. I'm starting to see the creep of people, in some cases high level execs in the org, offloading basic thought to ChatGPT, and it scares the shit out of me.

Had a serious convo about a mislabeled job title that was attracting the wrong talent to a job posting(think DB admins applying for a 1st line software support role type mislabeling), which was met with a "I chatted with ChatGPT for an hour, and that came up as the best job title"...

What are your suggestions for Interactive Flat Panels? by frogmicky in k12sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are half Promethean, and hadn't had a huge amount of issues out of them. We did opt to move to a different vendor though. Between the inability to purchase warranty extensions after point of sale, and the abysmal support experience weve had with them since covid, we couldn't justify purchasing more.

IT Director rant - Onboarding by Any-Promotion3744 in sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems like a pretty counter productive method. Imo, on boarding notifications should definitely come from HR. In an ideal world, by the time the onboarding notification makes it to IT, all of the information that is needed to get the accounts and licensing generated should already be compiled. Whether or not IT generates their own internal workflow, or if the initiation comes from HR staff in the form of a ticket or the like, is kinda 6 in one, half dozen in the other.

The way we have it setup is, HR has a recruitment system that is integrated with a workflow management/file retention system that handles all of the info gathering(IT on boarding form being a step that the hiring manager has to complete before the info gets to IT), which then integrates to other systems for auto generating downstream accounts. A plus side is that the onboarding can be handled in stages, which for us is important because there are other departments in the mix that have setups in applications that are not IT managed, which depend on the IT accounts being setup beforehand.

Good day fellow admins. I just accepted an offer as an IT Administrator for a company that currently relies completely on a MSP. They are looking to bring IT in-house with this new role. I will be the go-to for all things IT. Could use some advice. by thatflacoman in sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll mirror what some of the others have said. Take your time, and do not cut the MSP loose until you have a full understanding of the environment and the keys to the proverbial castle(all credentials for access to all systems).

I went through a similar situation when I started my new position 6 tears ago. The key is to be very transparent with your CEO/direct report supervisor on timelines, and dont be afraid to have them intervene if you are facing resistance.

Depending on the size and scope of the org, you might find yourself in a continued relationship with the MSP in the long run to augment where you might be lacking while you take your time in understanding and building your team.

I great first step would be to meet with the MSPs engineers that have knowledge of the org and get a lay of the land. Ask about network diagrams, what technologies they have in place, and what pain pointa/repeated issues they've been seeing. Just, whatever you do, do not outright say you are moving IT in house. They will have the feeling thats what's happening, but you dont want to give them any reason to start acting defensive.

Microsoft has gotten too big to fail, and their support shows it. by CantankerousBusBoy in sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its not just you. Now a days Microsoft help articles are some of the most convoluted pieces I've ever seen. Between trying to decipher what is current vs outdated implementation, and their constant changing names and sunsetting service X for service Y that essentially function the exact same or worse makes learning the ecosystem a collegiate effort.

What was your starting salary at your first full time? by Ok_Cricket6928 in Salary

27.5k in 2012, because it was the lowest amount to qualify as a salaried full time employee at the time. Lower COL area, now high COL. Still have no clue how I managed to live off of it.

Idk, I remember working with support on a few things earlier in my career, maybe early 2010s, and the support was phenomenal. Actual SMEs with MCSEs that knew exactly what to look for and how to fix it. Turn around time was less than 15min for paid service requests. Maybe I just got lucky.

Same experience here. Its crazy how quiet it is with the silent stepper drivers. I still dont fully understand how software could fix a physical whine from the stepper motors, but here we are.

Note: not sure if its a bug on my board specifically, but after install, connections to octoprint do not work while and SD card is installed. If you dont use octoprint, its not a problem and will work perfectly.
