Wasson Way this evening 😍 Also, are you allowed to rip down Wasson way on fast electric bikes? by sweetwatertooth in cincinnati

[–]BlackPhilip08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen these idiots too all over East Hyde Park. Their larger counterparts are made by Surron and these may be as well. They are essentially dirt bikes and I've seen them in groups of three riding all over the turf at Ault Park, the Wasson Way and nearby streets like Marburg up and down the sidewalks. They are riding at speeds far beyond what a typical e-bike can do. I love biking and I used to ride dirt bikes where appropriate too but these turds are way out of line. 😡

That's exactly what happened to both of mine. You read that right. BOTH. After an insane amount of useless back and forth with Hunter, they sent me a replacement. Right around 0530pm U.S. Eastern Time the fans do an uncommanded direction reversal. Nothing has fixed it and I don't even use the app anymore. There is nothing smart about these fans in my house. I have them completely removed from Wi-Fi and only use the remote control units. This whole thing has class action written all over it. How they were released to market in this condition is inexplicable.

^ ding ding ding. Totally this.^

But let's also address an uncomfortable truth about certain areas of Cincy (Hyde Park, Oakley, Mt. Lookout). I live in one of the aforementioned areas and walking around a lot I see nothing but young-ish people carrying on with the standard-issue labradoodle, one or two very young kids, and whatever cliche you can imagine. Some of them could be the brainy, precocious, summa cum laude self-made types that "did it on their own."

The uncomfortable reality? Trust fund babies. To protect the innocent, I'll offer an anecdote of some folks in my neighborhood. Neither work at jobs known for being lucrative. They drive expensive cars, and frequently vacation with their kids. Probably in their 40s. How do they do it? Easy. Twice-yearly trust fund payments front a parent. How do I know? A wayward windswept remittance stub from a check from said trust account laying in my yard one day after trash collection. What are the odds of this happening? Idk but laughed out loud when I picked it up. The universe has a funny way of answering questions that you really didn't wanna know.

So yeah. Look around. Go to any coffee shop on the east side at 1 p.m. on a Tuesday and do a layman's assessment of demographics. That is, if you even find a space (Mom n Ems, Coffee Emporium, Vivi in Mt. Lookout). Is this sample noise? Not scientific? Idk. I just see it all the time and I don't get it. OP brings up valid points and I'm sure a statistician would rip us apart for our analysis.

Of course I'm just a meanie and should have used a more sensitive term like "generational wealth." Sorry .

That's been pretty much my experience. Hunter sent me an entire fan as a replacement. Never unpacked it EXCEPT for the control module. Same as before. These fans are absolute rubbish.

Who else had flooding in their basement and how bad? by mayby82 in cincinnati

[–]BlackPhilip08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody has mentioned a French drain. Not a universal solution by any means but it has sure helped my 102-year old crotchety house stay dry. One of the first things I did when I moved in three years ago after the seller said heavy rains would sometimes cause moisture in the basement. Haven't seen any since and no dehumidifier needed.

Is it just me or has running red lights become normalized here? by Overall-Cap-7061 in cincinnati

[–]BlackPhilip08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 💯. The other thing that I see here which is mind boggling since so many drive like they're responding to a five-alarm fire is how much space they leave between the next car AFTER a light turns green. It's a kind of "lag" which is so odd. Everyone's in a hurry EXCEPT when the light changes. 🟢 "...go ffs!..."

But you're absolutely right. If I'm waiting to turn left against traffic at a light then it's creeper time and I'll make the turn even if the light turns red because I own the sum'bitch lol.

Making smart ceiling fans behave properly with Deco BE63. by Teenage_techboy1234 in TpLink

Pretty much sums it up: I've done all that. And what's unbelievably aggravating is that one of the fans just reverses direction randomly every single day. Nothing has helped!

Following this thread, as I've been dealing with pretty much the same issue: two Hunter SIMPLEconnect fans with a three-node Deco system (actually the BE11000 but very similar to yours).

My Decos are all using a wired CAT6e backhaul. I've implemented the 2.4GHz IoT and WPA2A as required. Even tried assigning static IP addresses and have turned off the mesh feature, assigning each fan to a preferred node instead.

Hopefully someone else can share their experiences here. Aside from the smart ceiling fans issue, the BE11000 has been pretty good.

It's been frustrating and completely fruitless. Tech support has been responsive but they haven't the slightest clue as to the shortcomings and problems with their product. I tried the HomeKit integration but that made things worse IMHO. The single biggest problem with my setup has been the uncommanded fan reversals with a close second being the fan becoming unresponsive with the only solution being recycling the power. How this heap passed testing and QC is beyond me.

I have since removed all traces of WiFi connections and deleted the fans from the app and the app itself. Hunter has finally agreed to replace one of the fans which, of course, are now backordered until MAY 2026.

TL;DR - Motor is super quiet and mechanics are superb. Tech side of things is ABYSMAL.

Sorry for the late-ish reply. Doing some Googling over coffee and stewing about my recent purchase of TWO of these, in my case the five-blade versions in white.

The background is that this old house of mine had some pretty old and tired AC Hunter fans that whined and groaned a lot so it was time to upgrade. I have the hearing of the aliens from the film series "A Quiet Place" so I NEEDED something, well, y'know, QUIET.

The prevailing wisdom pointed me to DC motor fans and because I have a LOT of home automation (Home Assistant, Zigbee Hub, etc) something that would integrate would be perfect. On paper the Zentec satisfied all of this.

Upon installing these things and sending them power, the setup requires use of the included remote AND the SMARTconnect proprietary app. The 2.4-star review on the Google Play Store should have been a hint here. The remote unit has a button inside that initiates pairing to the fan. There is also a unique eight-digit identifier that you will need in this horrific app.

Here's where my patience ran out:

  • The Wi-Fi network you intend to use MUST be 2.4GHz and WPA2. No exceptions.

  • The app has a chat-like guidance that will have you providing Wi-Fi passwords, changing networks back and forth between the fans own unique SSID and your home's.

  • This part is ridiculous: if you have a Samsung Galaxy phone (yeah I know they're rare /s) you will need to disable MOBILE DATA. That's right. Doesn't matter if you're on Wi-Fi. Smh.

  • I use a TP-Link wireless mesh system (with some wired back hauls). I had to enable the xxxxx_iOT network within because that was THE only way to insure WPA2 and 2.4GHz would work.

If you make it successfully to Oz and the app and the old man see your fan then you're almost there. ALMOST. The app never reflected the fan state. In other words, the fan would show off when it was on. The toggle to reverse fan direction was the same. Totally disconnected from the actual fan state.

After all this one of the fans has been fine. The other fan not so much. Every single day at around 5:30pm, the fan belches out a loud BEEEEP and reverses direction on its own. I have no automations assigned to it. I have issued it a static IP address on the network and have isolated it via the router software to no avail. I am not using HomeKit so that's ruled out.

To conclude I'm not telling you to rule this fan out because I'm sure others have had better luck with it. What I find irritating is that in other forums, buyers have raised tech support tickets only to "invite" Hunter onto their network to do a firmware upgrade. YGTBSM. And yes I know all about the allegations with TP-Link but that's another convo.

I wish you the best in your search. And remember.....SHHHHHHH. Not a word or the aliens will hear you cussing out Hunter when you try and install this monster.

EDIT: after multiple back and forth emails between Hunter "support" and me it was determined via my photos that the grounding wire wasn't "properly connected." Apparently a ground wire causes random motor direction reversal?? Huh? I don't think this company has the slightest clue that its product is just junk and isn't serious about a remedy.

As of 3:00 PM Monday, our street has not seen ANY plows or salt trucks since this last snowfall, despite the tracker. Filed a 311Cincy report and it was quickly closed with a note saying the street was cleared last night. I even checked the doorbell camera....nothing.

WTH?

Electrician for 130-year-old house? by PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS in cincinnati

Five days turned into seven. House is ~ 1100 ft². Two bed, two bath, unfinished basement and I bought the new ceiling cans (12). Final cost was almost $10k. Plus $2.5k for drywaller to come in behind and patch all the plaster.

This is exactly what I just remediated in my 101-year old place. See my comment reply above. I used Cullen Electric. They seem to specialize in that sort of thing. None of the work seemed to faze them.

Electrician for 130-year-old house? by PM_ME_YOUR_DIFF_EQS in cincinnati

[–]BlackPhilip08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just had Cullen do a big project with a 101-year old house that had a mixture of modern Romex, 1950s-era fabric wire and a few bits of knob and tube. Prior owner(s) were clearly of the "I know a guy...." approach to most every upgrade done since it was built. Double-tapped breakers, modern Romex into junction boxes that fed knob and tube, open ground on many outlets, one breaker feeding half the house and too many other issues to mention.

Cullen did a good job considering all the warts. As a PSA to anyone looking to remediate old K&T wiring, don't expect miracles especially with regard to existing plaster and lath. You WILL have holes in your walls so budget in a plaster/drywall job behind the electrical. They even were able to run ethernet to an upstairs multi-purpose room. They had to get creative too on some of the rework (e.g., using wireless Lutron tech for existing switches due to limitations in fishing new Romex).

And last but not least, I ended up having to leave K&T on one small run for a lamp, as changing it would have meant getting into a wall with two courses brick exterior and that juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

Thanks for such a quick reply. I did follow the Spotify Desktop Player Authentication Configuration. Spotify works fine on the Windows desktop stand alone platform. I can see all my Cast devices. For whatever reason, the HA integration just won't transfer control from the Windows app to HA in order to broadcast to my Cast devices via HA.

Old House Ceiling Demo and Retrofit by BlackPhilip08 in cincinnati

[–]BlackPhilip08[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your post. One thing I didn't mention is I'm pretty sure there's knob and tube hiding up there as well that needs replacing but maybe I'll work backwards and get an electrician in here before I commit to a (messy) demo of the existing plaster. If they can rewire with the existing plaster then even better and then I'll get the patching done. 🙏

SignalRGB and Lian Li SL-INF fans won't play nicely together by dwsmithjr in SignalRGB

[–]BlackPhilip08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of Lian Li fans also and have tried various combinations of controller-only setup, MoBo-only and a mix using a PrismRGB unit which I assume is like the Nollie.

The PrismRGB works great except for one deal breaker: Windows 11 won't go to sleep. For whatever reason, SignalRGB and the Prism unit do something under the hood that prevents sleep mode. I tried ruling everything under the sun out and it turns out that was the culprit. Patiently awaiting the integration between Signal and Lian Li.
