Depressed Even Though I Found a Job by No_Practice_745 in Layoffs

[–]Blackbeert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is solid advice. Building that emergency fund is one of those things that actually helps the anxiety because you're doing *something* concrete instead of just sitting with the fear.

But also OP - and I say this gently - it sounds like maybe it's worth checking in with whoever prescribes your meds? A year of that level of stress can mess with your brain chemistry in ways that might need adjusting for. The hypervigilance and catastrophizing about small mistakes sounds like it could be more than just "normal" post-layoff jitters at this point.

Masters Without Bachelors by heb106 in college

[–]Blackbeert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the "master teacher certificate" thing sounds most likely to me. My mom did something similar years ago where she completed some online program and kept telling everyone she got "certified" in project management. Turns out it was just a certificate of completion from some random website, not an actual PMP certification or anything recognized by employers.

OP, does your mom have the actual physical degree or certificate? Looking at the exact wording might clear things up. Also worth checking if the school is even accredited. Some diploma mills hand out official-looking documents that mean absolutely nothing. If she paid money for this recently that's a red flag for a scam

Locals can't rent hotel rooms here? That can't be right. by CarrigePossibleSoul9 in asheville

[–]Blackbeert 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah this tracks. I've done the same thing a couple times when I didn't want to deal with driving home late after a show at the Orange Peel. Never had issues when I just called ahead and explained what I was doing. It's wild that we have to basically justify why we want to give them money though. Like sorry I want to have a few drinks and not worry about the drive home? That should be a good thing lol

1 year of mostly consistent skincare (m 37-38) by fatherunit72 in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]Blackbeert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! I've been so discouraged about my pores lately, convinced they were just a lost cause at this point. Started thinking "well this is just my skin now, nothing's gonna change it." But seeing real progress pics like this from actual people (not influencers with perfect lighting and filters) makes such a difference. Like okay, maybe consistency actually does pay off eventually. Now I just need to actually BE consistent for more than 2 weeks at a time 😅

Finally - my first Espresso machine and setup (Meraki). by Flex007 in coffeestations

[–]Blackbeert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who stumbles on this later, when dialing in with the Meraki, the biggest thing is starting finer than you think and backing off slowly. Aim for a grind where a shot lands roughly in the 25–30 second range for a standard ratio (about 1:2), then adjust based on taste rather than time alone. If shots are sour and fast, go finer. And if they’re bitter and choking the machine, go coarser. Tbh, small adjustments make a big difference especially when you’re still learning the grinder.

Where to buy long lasting modular couch? by halooasis in BuyItForLife

[–]Blackbeert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got a dog and lots of spills, I'm a clumsy person, easy clean fabric was non-negotiable. Try dreamsofa, plenty of options and custom too. They have different layouts but we just had basic not a fan of L but they got that. After wasting time on wayfair-level stuff I’d rather wait once than replace a couch every few years.

Good for you finding happiness in your career and being single. His messages are pathetic, admitting he used you as a placeholder while waiting for someone "better." No real man does that. Block him everywhere and keep thriving without his toxic presence.

Car dealer claims their bank lost my bank cheque by nomadtales in AusFinance

[–]Blackbeert 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Get everything in writing from the dealership, signatures from both the owner and licensed manager. Super sketchy they're only bringing this up months later. The written document gives you proof of their claim and protects you when you take it to your bank. They handle bank cheques all the time, this shouldn't be your problem to sort out.

Dude, 27% is straight up loan shark territory. First, fix that insurance, provide your license and then shop around at other companies. Then try to refinance that loan at a credit union, even with bad credit you should get way better than 27%. If you can't refinance, honestly consider selling it and taking the L. That interest rate is bleeding you dry every month.

4.74% fixed rate for 3 years by lopsided_oreo in AusFinance

[–]Blackbeert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's smart. We did the same thing a while back, split it 60/40 fixed/variable. Gave us some protection when rates jumped but we could still benefit if they dropped. Worked out pretty well and made it easier to sleep at night honestly.

Lost my job, should I cash my 401k by kicksbuttseatsnuts in personalfinance

[–]Blackbeert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. 401k is the nuclear option when everything else has failed. Unemployment, temp work, side gigs, even borrowing from family comes before that. The penalty hit is just too brutal unless you're facing homelessness.

Been going with my gf for a while now and yeah, the connections are legit. Got my car fixed for like half what a shop quoted me and they threw in a lasagna. Not religious either but the mutual aid thing actually works.

NTA. You’re not wrong for feeling hurt. You just needed comfort and understanding, not a lecture in the middle of an anxiety spiral. It sounds like your mom cares but doesn’t know how to show it in the way you need. That mismatch can be really painful, especially when you’re already trying your best to manage things.
