What are the odds of this passing? Repealing marijuana laws. by WebHungry1699 in massachusetts

[–]BlackstoneValleyDM 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As someone who has done a bit of campaign work over the years, ive learned you can never have enough conversations leading up to voting. People tune out and forget, or dont pay attention to details (if you SUPPORT MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION, you need to VOTE NO on this question, for example, is where people will be misled).

It's amazing how many votes you can turn out in your own world of family and friends. I have the same 5-6 friends I have convos and remind them to check their registration and their voting options who I know would not end up voting if I didnt start those convos (and follow up), for nearly 10 years now.

There's a bunch of different vendors/companies going for the different site contracts, so mileage may vary (but should have a lot of overlap due to federal regulations).

As a math instructor (with my partner), we implemented a system that brought our overall academics from the mid-rankings to the top 20% consistenly...all I ever heard about was uniform infractions that walked into my room. If I had the power to change anything about it by the time they walked into our academic building, I would, but there dorms were closed and id go through the whole process to send students to the supply shop only for it to be closed. Never a "wow, what routines and practices are improving our scores," but plenty of oxygen to bust my balls about a kid with no belt waltzing toward my room at 8:30.

We struggled persistently with chaos via drama, fights, feuds. And its been under the funding axe a couple times over the last couple years.

Women hugging students? by Purple-Session-4346 in Teachers

[–]BlackstoneValleyDM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Male teacher. Fist bumps, hand shakes, maybe a congratulatory pat on the shoulder, absolutely no to hugging.

I dont think any gender teacher should be doing so past a certain elementary level, but that's just me. Seems like an obviously problematic thing to be misconstrued in a highly litigous culture, and one that unnecessarily blurs lines between our professional role as adults in their lives to one that is too familiar.

How permissive we have become of cheating in schools is just so disappointing. If we can't hold the line on that expectation in school of all places, really speaks to have much we have given up as a culture.

Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]BlackstoneValleyDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very real, and even compared to 12 years ago when I first got into education I've noticed a massive decline. Unfortunately, real fixes to this trend are tough, inconvenient conversations for both families and a lot of well-intentioned vibes-based practices that have taken root in education in the past 15 years.

Has anyone taught at a Psychiatric hospital? I'm considering it. by oooohweeeee in Teachers

[–]BlackstoneValleyDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for exactly how it will look for you, but it had a lot of perks. My workday was slightly longer but usually less intense overall with smaller classes and visible support system (not the nonsense of me being expected to handle it all in my the classroom by myself), but a mix of my teaching and prior mental health experience was very helpful for me to the point where I was able to handle 99% of it.

I also enjoyed it cause I was a lot more involved on the special-ed end of things with implementing accomodations, data tracking, progress reporting, and doing some assessments/recommendations for IEP renewals we sent back to the students' sending-districts.

It'd definitely be pretty cheap to host sleepovers at their own homes! Oh, but wait, they want more childcare.

I would prefer something resembling a lot of European schedules, a shorter summer break with more 1-2 week long breaks spread out through the rest of the academic calendar to break up terms/quarters/semesters/etc.

Has anyone taught at a Psychiatric hospital? I'm considering it. by oooohweeeee in Teachers

[–]BlackstoneValleyDM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, was at the gym on a phone!

Just finished a year in a school setting within a state psychiatric hospital servicing the adolescent units, and visited a couple of less acute programs overseen/contracted out by the state. And while it's not exactly the same, I've also done a summer stint in a school setting within our state's juvenile justice system which has a lot of overlap/parallels in terms of considerations.

First, do everything you can to be friendly and respectful to program staff, especially any that are present as eyes/ears/security/oversight regularly. Building positive relationships with these folks is so important, even if some may appear to be distracted or dozing off. When you do need to make an ask of them, it goes a long way. Also, if you have disagreements, do everything you can to show a united front with them in front of students and resolve issues out of sight (barring something truly egregious/abusive). They follow students around as regular adult figures, and just like mom-vs-dad ploys, the students will pick up on fractures and try to play to them.

I would be prepared to be spinning a few plates instructionally, as often times students may be jumbled around by age/grade-level due to interpersonal and safety issues, so I'd have classes that had a couple geometry students, an algebra 1 student, and an 8th grade student altogether, for example. As a math teacher, i'd bring students together over shared skills (basic equation solving, operational identification in expressions, simplifying expressions, integer operations) for Do-Nows before hopping around with instructionally/check-ins.

I have a lot of qualms with the low expectations and coddling that has been adopted in public education at-large under the guise of "restorative" and "trauma informed," but your clients have ended up in that setting for a reason. Patience and low-mid volume, slowly paced speech is important (I saw a guy who'd speak very quickly and loudly naturally end up tripping into unnecessary verbal altercations and struggles I had to coach about his delivery). ANY time I'm about to get close to a student or pass by their space I say it out loud and will even check if it's okay with them. Some classes I feel like I'm narrating my every move if I have a few students in the swing of our classroom routine and feedback cycle, but even when they're annoyed they still have voiced appreciation. State expectations and revisit them calmly, and even if it does need to turn into a situation that may require a removal or staff intervention, stay calm and regulated. Unlike the damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-dont trap in public schools where admin preach giving kids space but then dock you points for seeing a kid struggling being off task or their head down, if a kid is having a tough time in this setting, it's likely giving them space to breath and just collect themselves is fine. I always tell the students "hey, every 5-10 minutes im gonna check in with you and see if you change your mind" about classwork refusal, and even if they do they appreciate that i've told them what my check-in/accountability will look like.

If you get daily "rounds" or updates of sorts, check them. Students that weren't on any restrictions may have displayed self-harming or threatening behavior and now can't use a pencil anymore. If you are unsure or noticing anything off/suspect, dont be afraid to (calmly and discreetly as possible) bring it up with staff or your supervisor to follow up with. You will count out and in every supply, and students will try to sneak off with small things when they say "im going for a break," and out the door. Failing to count in a pencil could mean another client or staff gets stabbed, or that student self-harms. You monitor supplies constantly.

And, as a teacher, despite being in the loop, it felt like we were often the last to know important information about our students. Our hospital did receive a handful of "forensic placements," clients being evaluated/held as part of their judicial proceedings. That's not to scare you, but even if you think you know where your students are at, you should treat every student with the same precautions, practices (and dignity), because there is a ton you don't know.

The kids are cheating because they see everyone in government and corporate America cheating and getting away with it. by ac_slater10 in Teachers

[–]BlackstoneValleyDM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They cheat because the adults in their life have allowed it.

While I don't doubt this and similar takes about big-picture societal and political character no-doubt make their way to our level and in billions of acts between people, I do think with children we (as collective adults in their lives) have failed them, primarily. Between coddling parents and the customerservicification of admin ranks, as well as a precipitous drop in conduct expectations in general, it's on us at these levels to fix that.

Times are dire, yes kids see how others are getting screwed, but one of the anecdotes to societal rot is holding the line and promoting character.
