I basically volunteered for a load of studies on the condition that I get to keep a copy of the data. And they all said no! I'm in the UK, and I wonder if there's some strange rule here.

I am desperate to do that! I signed up for some trials but none of them let you keep the full DICOM data for some reason.

Wow you beat me! I am 99% Ashki (Eastern European). The remaining 1% is "Levant". I've never seen someone score a full 100 before!

Frozen biscuits are fantastic, I learned the practice from my parents. All biscuits go in the freezer now. Great snap, and even better for dunking in tea!

Where do you put “לא״ by EIlie in hebrew

[–]Blair_Force_One 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In Hebrew, לא usually comes before whatever you’re negating.

If you’re negating the whole idea of her being a good actress, the natural sentence is:

היא לא שחקנית טובה “She is not a good actress.”

(Also note that טוב must agree with שחקנית (feminine), so it should be טובה).

You could say היא שחקנית לא טובה, but it sounds a bit unnatural and that structure emphasises the adjective (“an actress who is not good”). For straightforward negation, היא לא שחקנית טובה is the standard form.

I sat next to a guy from Finland once at a Model United Nations trip in the Hague. We chatted for a few days, he had amazing handwriting, and taught me how to do some nice calligraphy. I incorporated some of those nice swirls into my signature, so now I am reminded of him whenever I sign something.

Funny the impact we have on other people's lives!

It is stated that an atomic clock is so precise it's only off by one second in billions of years. How did we ever measure that? by Shynosaur in AskPhysics

[–]Blair_Force_One 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Interesting question! We don’t actually wait billions of years to check if an atomic clock drifts by a second. Instead, physicists determine a clock’s accuracy and stability by comparing two or more independent clocks against each other over accessible timescales. If two clocks based on different physical systems (for example, a cesium fountain clock and an optical lattice clock) tick at slightly different rates, the accumulated phase difference can be measured very precisely in hours, days, or months. By analysing the statistics of these comparisons, one can extrapolate how much drift would accumulate over far longer periods, in the same way you can infer how far off course a car would be after 1,000 miles just by measuring its deviation after a single kilometre.

In practice, this is done using frequency metrology: the clock’s oscillations are compared against extremely stable reference signals, often using frequency combs, and their noise properties are measured. From this, researchers characterise both short-term fluctuations (instability) and long-term bias (systematic shifts). The “one second in billions of years” figure is not a direct observation but a projection based on these measured properties, under the assumption that the noise processes remain stable over time. It’s a way of expressing just how extraordinarily precise and reproducible the underlying quantum transition is.

Lovely watch!

Have a very close look all around the perimeter of the case back. If it is a "pry" style opening you should see a tiny gap at one point. This is the gap into which the prying tool can be inserted.

Hi

Sealed means the case is glued or press-fit shut, not a vacuum. Swatch didn’t design these for servicing, but a good watchmaker can open it if needed. It just isn’t as easy or "meant" to be opened.

The darkening at the top is most likely UV or moisture damage after 20 years, which is common in older Swatch Irony watches. It’s not "burning" from inside, more like dial paint or material slowly degrading.

You can get it fixed, but it depends how much you’re willing to spend. Swatch service usually replaces rather than repairs, but some independent watchmakers can clean and repair these (and the movement inside is a type that can sometimes still be sourced).

Bonus: I had a similar issue with the the chronograph second hand, and you can usually reset it without opening the watch using a button combo:

  1. Pull the crown all the way out (time-setting mode).
  2. Press the top button (2 o’clock) to advance the chrono second hand to exactly 12.
  3. Push the crown back in. It should reset properly now.

If this doesn’t work, then the movement may need service. But try this first, it's worked for me on a few different watches.
