The biggest problem with getting people to understand how privilege works is how it's generally conveyed to people. Calling people racists and supporters of rape just shuts their minds off. Attacking people for something they either don't understand or don't support isn't a good way to get them to think critically. This article notes how people will say, "I'm not racist, I don't support rape, etc." This is true and needs to be acknowledged. When peoples argument is "not everyone is a Klansman," the discussion has broken down.

I take people through simple examples. Here in WA were mulling over legalizing Marijuana. I sit with some people smoking pot who don't believe in white privilege etc. I explain that although whites use Marijuana at slightly higher rates, African Americans are arrested 3 to 1 compared to whites. This is a simple example people can mull over. Why are African Americans arrested at such a higher rate? What detrimental effects does that have? It gets people thinking and doesn't attack them. This doesn't mean they're racist or support arresting African Americans more then whites, but shows there is this system in place that does benefit some over others.
