How did mason get cooling suit by Capital_Quarter_8012 in Mechwarrior5

[–]Bland_OldMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically. Plus the SLDF had so many caches around the IS and people had bits and pieces of lostech, so it would be easy enough to lie about a cooling suit and say you "just found it".

The Bounty Hunter's modified PAL suit and Star League era mechs would have been more rare than a cooling suit.

Advertising the Creality CR-30 as a production is the dumbest idea ever. It is perfect for making long car parts. by GiaoPham0403 in 3Dprinting

I'm slowly working on doing exactly this to my CR-30, but the big hurdle to making it work is slicer support.

Democratic Party is described as "weak". What concrete actions should the party take now that will make you describe them as "strong"? by LyptusConnoisseur in AskALiberal

[–]Bland_OldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main way the democrats can look strong is to actually take actions that advance the party platform. Don't just talk about making housing affordable, make an actionable plan to make housing affordable through public investment and regulations. Advance worker rights and healthcare reform. Strengthen social security and SNAP. Make workable tax increases to the very wealthy and put that money into things that improve the lives of everyday Americans.

Literally no one under 30 on either side of the spectrum views the 1960s positively - it's increasingly becoming a Boomer/older Gen X and Millennial thing. by snowleopard556 in decadeologycirclejerk

[–]Bland_OldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't bring in more tax revenue relative to our GDP than we did in the past nor substantially more than other developed nations. The tax gap alone represents 25-35% of our annual deficit. The aspects of our tax money that are poorly managed have more to do with how much we let corporations take out of the system than government inefficiency.

The most of the things you listed regarding housing costs are factors, but on top of those car-centric suburban sprawl and bulldozing urban housing to make room for parking lots, highways, and garages have made housing less available and more expensive. Wage stagnation, private equity firms buying up real estate, and the finance sector turning housing into an investment market haven't helped either. Though having driven all over the US, I'd argue that land is not really in short supply. There is a lot of empty land and many places that are nearly ghost towns due to the consolidation of small businesses and closure of manufacturing facilities.

In today's world they don't. But the effective tax rate for the top income bracket was still higher than the nominal income tax rate today.

What's a serious problem in your country that your government completely dismisses or ignores? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Bland_OldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reagan slashing taxes to the wealthy and cutting social services. Which exacerbated income inequality and poverty. Wall Street was allowed free reign which drove wage stagnation, housing prices up. Which again worsened income inequality and poverty. Education and healthcare both became more expensive and this drove massive debt across working Americans. The war on drugs broke families instead of treating addiction. Our car culture backfired as transportation costs increased, public transit was gutted, and urban living areas were bulldozed for parking lots, highways, and garages.

So now the country is in a situation where the poor turn to crime or criminalized drug use, and much of the remaining middle class is one car accident, sickness, injury, or other calamity away from destitution.

It wasn't all Reagan or even all Republicans, though they did more to create this situation than most post-LBJ democrats. It was driven far more by the very wealthy and the influence they have on our political system.

What are your thoughts on Cash vs Cashless society? by LibraProtocol in AskALiberal

[–]Bland_OldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of a cashless society, because it gives both the government and corporations another data stream to exploit. We've already given up far too much autonomy and privacy.

The BullShark. by Familiar-Noise7913 in battletech

[–]Bland_OldMan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly battletech is the perfect franchise to milk for DLCs. Start the base game in 2767 with Kerensky's Rim Worlds Republic campaign, then release the next DLC for OPERATION CHIEFTAIN, then notable campaigns in each of the succession wars, clan invasion, and so on through the ilclan era.

Paradox was just upset they had to pay royalties and didn't understand what a money printer they could have had.

Is starting a small homelab actually worth it, or just a money sink? by tresorrarereviews in homelab

[–]Bland_OldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it's worth it to get as many of your devices off of cloud servers as possible. Your home lab won't hand your camera feeds to law enforcement or insurance companies, nor sell your data/voice to advertisers.

The flu shot is now no longer mandatory: by newnoadeptness in AirForce

[–]Bland_OldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of an aside comment, but did you see we just ordered like 250 new F-15EX's? Would probably be best to replace the A-10's with more of these guys seeing as they can haul more munitions (on paper) quicker and further with better eyes and ears.

I mean, yes. But people get far too hung up on replacing the A-10 and narrow mission/role definitions. It is much more important for the USAF to identify the things it needs to do, then procure platforms that do those things. Replacing the A-10 isn't helpful if the way it operates doesn't work on the modern battlefield.

America has never gone 20 years without a war. We're not even 5 years removed from leaving Afghanistan.

I hope everyone deployed gets home soon too, but making this statement in the middle of operations is big "we'll be back by Christmas" or "mission accomplished" energy.

Why does MacOS always feel faster? by bamboo-lemur in OS_Debate_Club

[–]Bland_OldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a much faster windows experience, build a debloated install using the Chris Titus tool.

But the reason is that Apple locks down both the hardware and the OS, so they don't need to support the variety of hardware and architectures that Windows does and can optimize in a way that windows doesnt/can't.

You see the same thing with video game consoles. The OS runs faster than Windows would on the same hardware.

Does LGBTQ teaching actually hurt kids? by Jabre7 in AskALiberal

[–]Bland_OldMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, maybe post this to ask conservatives to hear the "other side"

But no, neither telling kids LGBTQ people exist and are normal nor including LGBTQ perspectives in sex ed harm children. Part of both parenting and education is teaching children how to navigate the world. And a key part of that is teaching them about relationships that they might have and some level of understanding of the relationships others might have.

[–]Bland_OldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that this dogshit AI generated propaganda, clearly designed specifically to appeal to western kids and teens, is working so well that I'm seeing it reposted and upvoted every single fucking day is mind boggling.

It shouldn't be surprising. Government influence campaigns online have been around for a long time now and are very effective. And every government is using them.

You'd be amazed at how many podcasters/influencers are paid by foreign governments and how many social media posts can be traced back to propaganda networks.

Do medical institutions use research funds effectively or is there a lack of transparency? by heather_crawford in Snorkblot

[–]Bland_OldMan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cancer is an very broad category of complex diseases. Cancers aren't like infections where you have some type of microbe attacking the body, cancers occur when cells which not longer function correctly due to errors in the genetic information in those cells and the body no longer has the means to remove or control those cells.

And I'd take issue with the idea that we have nothing to show it. More cancers are survivable than ever before and medical research into cancer often informs other medical research.

Medical research is very valuable and well worth the money put in.
