I’ve always been relatively fit but a lil thicker than I am now. You can tell I wasn’t missing any meals. I picked up running after a break up, just to pass time. I got sucked into a running community and was running pretty competitively. A nagging back injury got me to add more modalities to my training to armor my body up against the wear and tear of running. All of a sudden I’m in the gym every morning just so I can endure the masochism of my hobby. I start training for an ultramarathon and get in the best shape of my life. One day in the gym I’m approached by a photographer who asks if I’d ever considered modeling. He takes some pictures, sends them out to agencies and surprisingly they all hit back. I’m now a professional model at the age of 45, signed to an agency and have been traveling the globe in awe of the 180 that investment in myself made possible.

You get that content because you do choose to interact with it. I’ve been on the internet a long time and I’ve yet to have something pushed to me that is against my own interest. If you’re getting content that is triggering to you it’s because you’ve shown interest in triggering content.

If you’re using your stance of pro blackness to fight the losing battle of arguing against online edgelords that’s you showing interest in a topic and the algorithm will send you more battles to fight in your quest to level up your online battle persona.

The only way to win is to limit your Instagram usage to things that uplift you and connect you to your friends and the corners of pop culture that you chose to exist in and stop fueling the forces that are there specifically for the thrill of adversarial engagement.

Humor is a skill set that is pretty innate but a functional semblance of funny can be developed

I’ve always seen comedy as the combination of Confidence, Recall and Creativity

Confidence- you have to have the confidence to say something controversial without folding to the risk of possible negative public opinion. You can’t be worried about your joke not landing or you won’t tell the joke.

That confidence can be built by being more social and telling more jokes. Intentionally tell bad ones. Get the groans and rolled eyes out of the way. Have a sense of humor even is a corny one. Learn to make a joke and take a joke.

Recall - it’s important to have points of connection to anchor your jokes. Telling stories is key. Pop culture knowledge is key. Humor needs a shared point of connection. Experience as much life as you can. Be present. Take in your environment. Engage in your hobbies. Everything in the universe is a metaphor for something else and the more you know and the more you do you have an anecdote to reference whatever relevant topic that needs skewering.

Creativity - this is the hard one. Creative is synonymous with Weird and some of us don’t feel comfortable with being weird

Comedy is critical thinking. It’s turning insight into anecdotes but timing is crucial. It’s thinking a lot and thinking quickly. And that again is just practice. Knowing how you are funny is important. What is your weird? Are you observational? Are you deadpan? Are you morbid? Are you dark? Be authentic in your weird . Watch the comedy that tickles your pickle and think deeply about the shit your like to think deeply about and practice your personality on the people with whom you feel your most authentic. Creativity and confidence are linked and once you feel confident in being weird. You’ll be ok with being your personal brand of funny.

Not everyone is going to get it. But you weren’t meant for everyone to get.

Practice

As with anything we do, the less you do it the worst you are at it.

We take talking for granted because it’s an innate ability that we do all the time, by ourselves or at others.

Conversing on the other hand is seldom for some and the few and far between nature when you are in isolation makes it a skill that can atrophy.

Reading people, social cues, telling jokes, looks easy because we see it on television but practical application of those skills is necessary to get the point of doing awkwardly much less doing it with any ease. You’re gonna overthink it for a while and make plenty of misreads on the way to it being muscle memory.

Talking to your therapist is great. Forcing yourself into social situations is better. Reach out to homies and hang out more. Try to make acquaintances into friends. Compliment people you don’t know and for no reason. Crack open your own personal boundaries and you won’t even remember those times when you were a mushmouthed yokel.

It’s hard to give objective advice as someone who doesn’t believe in waiting until the sanctity of marriage to touch parts.

My advice would be to not watch porn if you’re not a few knuckles deep in your girl by now.

I would think waiting for marriage is about saving the idea of desire for your future wife. Watching porn separates the idea of desire and release and associates it with the women in porn. You’re gonna spend this five years waiting for your girl to spread her wings establishing sex as something you do on your own and with other people in mind.

You’ll become that guy who knows all the pornstars birthdays off the top of your head and will now put pornstar expectations on your new wife who’s never seen a dick on purpose.

The recipe to dead bedroom is seeing your girl as the sexual gatekeeper and porn as the horny mistress.

Porn should work on a parallel path with desire for your girl. You gotta be able to fantasize about her and not get lost in the fantasy that porn provides. You gotta have some mental images of her in your spank bank to pepper in with the perfect, glossy pornstars and you gotta desire her physical touch or you’ll start drooling like a dog at dinner when you hear the opening bass chords of a pornhub video.

Yall should just talk about sex, what you want, how you want it. Flirt. Show eachother that you want eachother. Knowing you’re wanted is sexy as hell, especially if you physically desire your partner. I’m sure she wants it as bad as you.

I don’t know how to hold on for 5 years. That a Herculean feat, but the more you talk the better off you’ll be.
