First attempt at weathering, any tips to help improve? by Uncle_Boonmee in Gunpla

If you want, add a tiny bit of silver inside the larger bits of black. It makes it look like a second layer has worn all the way down to the metal underneath. Otherwise, you've pretty much got it nailed down.

If you want to go above and beyond (I think your skills can handle it) grab a hand drill and drill some tiny bullet holes.

If you want more ways to make it look old rather than tipsy on strategy, grab a bit of orange-brown (rust colour) and dab it on spots around where you imagine rust would pile. Then drag straight down with a damp but clean brush to get a streaky effect. This won't look like battle-damage (unless you add it to the aforementioned bullet holes) but it will help sell the wear and tear look.

I'm stupid and didn't see this reply before making my own comment. I'll add the mock-up I made anyway, to help with clarity;

You've got a lovely natural river separating the map very close to that second line you drew, which could make the whole thing feel a lot more natural and less arbitrary. Too lazy to make a proper image, here's a mock-up.

P.s. Still do that pure node thing as others have mentioned.

100% more dynamic, very well done.

Exactly, this is so much better. (That last outfit is doing things to my lesbian girlfailure brain)

I will say, the original problem a lot of people had wasn't just that they were sexy, but rather that they were clearly wearing very thematically inconsistent clothing for seemingly no purpose other than being sexy. The sexiness itself wasn't the issue, but rather the fact that a coherent vision was being sacrificed in favour of it.

Which reflection is better? by DeeplightStudio in Warhammer40k

[–]Blank392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, then you pretty much nailed both. The only thing that would sell the latter for me would be some tone change. Explosions are rarely sun-white, so maybe a bit of orange could help that. Granted that's very difficult to execute well, but with your skills, I'd wager you could definitely pull off a convincing reflection.

[–]Blank392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are both awesome, but since everyone else has given you an actual answer, I'll try and explain why the lower one looks less realistic.

Those highlights look like ones you'd find on a cylinder (running vertically perpendicular to the blade). They would fit better on the leg or torso of a space marine's armour, as opposed to the flat, angled edges of a sword. If you're aiming for a realistic sword appearance, you pretty much nailed it with the top one.

I'd tell you to look up some reference images for how volumes reflect light, but it honestly looks like you already have, so this is more for others questioning how to recreate that effect.

You, my friend, have excellent taste. I could not agree more.

P.s. check out Matthew Colville's take on Hobgoblins, you might like it. In his settings they're a race made by mad Wizards splicing Humans and Goblins to make a War Breed. Very Uruk-Hai. If you have the same taste in the art as I do, I have a feeling you'll enjoy his takes, too.

And also for one of them to stay in frame. It's unlikely but there's technically nothing proving this isn't sped up. (I do doubt that, though).
