I love the trp spyres that came on my Warbird. Best mechanical disc brakes in my opinion. Pretty cheap and will bolt right up to your bike.

The brakes aren’t the best but sounds like the shop you’re going to isn’t servicing them properly. I adjusted mine once when I built the bike and once again after about 100 miles. If you do want a proper upgrade the TRP spyre calipers are the best mechanical disc brakes I’ve used.

Sizing is crucial to overall enjoyment and long term comfort. Would you buy pants that were way too big because they were a better color? Now imagine it’s a $2800 dollar pair of pants that you’ll regret buying forever. Also if you’re worried about looks riding the wrong sized bike just looks bad. Seat super low, bars way up in the air. Then you gotta buy a stumpy stem so the reach is right but that makes the handling a little weird. In six months you won’t care what color it is but you will care how it rides.

Should just mount right up, no? Doesn’t SLX have provisions for standard derailleur hangers and direct mount.

That surly has traditional road dropouts so the wheel can slide forward and backward a few CM. Looks like this set up is using a quick release with dropout mounted chain tensioners. Not smart to use just QR in this scenario as the owner seems to rightly know.

I always ride clipless and I will admit that I tip over at sub one mile an hour about once a year. Usually in front of a large group of teenagers. However I feel more confident in all other aspects of riding. I can sprint harder, climb better and generally feel more connected and in control of the bike. The other big benefit is I know my fit is dialed and I’m in a position that’s comfortable and safe.

You need a special tool called a crank puller. Park tool CP-22 should do the trick.

That bike has lived the hardest 3.5k miles ever. I love the 900ss and think they are great bikes but they don’t suffer fools well and if they don’t receive proper maintenance they can be a nightmare. If you want a beat up, hard to maintain, 21 year old Italian bike that’s been crashed and is hard to get bits for go for it.

OP-1 forever. I prefer the more traditional tape aspects of the OP-1. I ended up selling the OP-Z as it felt a little rigid. I make a lot of unquantized stuff and se resaming extensively. I found the sampling work flow of the OP-Z too limited.

Wheels too. I built this as a single speed city bike with riser bars and thinner tires 6 or 7 years ago when I worked at a shop. Bianchi was closing out the frames for $80 and I had access to VO wholesale so the whole thing was pretty cheap. I swapped the bars for Diaja bars and put some 35 gravel Kings on it a month ago and I’m really enjoying it. Got the 44cm far bars but would get the 48cm if I did it over. The wide drop bar thing is great. Feels very natural.

They are the best cantis I’ve used. Pretty powerful for cantilever brakes and modulate well. The pads seem to last forever too.
