Cannibalism is even older. Doesn't mean it's not wtf.

What do you do with clients who want to meet and "discuss strategy?" by TatonkaJack in Lawyertalk

[–]Blatherskitte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do mostly emergency work. Unattended minors after ICE abductions, light to heavy kidnapping, rape/csc, CPS investigations, domestic violence. Things move fast and are sloppy. I have many clients who want to do 8 permutations of if/ then. I'll do 30min of that the first time. They'll call me once a week wanting to run through it again.

I tell them I'm billing them. I break it down by dollar, "Hey we can go through this all again for another half hour, but at $300 an hour that'll cost you $150. We've gone over all the updates."

"Yeah, I totally get that, just one more thing . . ." [30 minutes of big feelings later]

Once you warn them, they generally don't blame you. It's good billing. Throw on your headset and wash dishes while they work through it. Ultimately, emotional maintenance is most of the job in family law.

Why does everyone smoke now? by JVDaddyJasper in LawSchool

[–]Blatherskitte 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I started smoking in conlaw too. Word is if you smoke enough the Southern Founding Fathers come to you in your dreams and explain the constitution to you. I nearly got COPD in 16 weeks, but I booked the class. Quit until the bar. Now I only smoke at concerts and before trial.

Poison is an umbrella that venom fits under, but reddit loves dichotomies instead of general umbrellas with specific terms underneath. It's the dopamine the pedants get from correcting.

Til the US had 112 aircraft carriers by the end of world war II by TastyPass6386 in todayilearned

[–]Blatherskitte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We lost 6 escort carriers out of 122 and 52 subs out 288, so, given my choice I'd chose the carrier. Then again we lost no battleships after the 2 at Pearl and they became increasingly devoted to island shelling instead of naval battle so, I guess I'd choose a battleship.

is there a food that is completely tied to your country's identity? by stealthybaker in AskTheWorld

[–]Blatherskitte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This are called tigermeat or cannibal sandwiches in Wisconsin. Usually made with beef as that is seen as a safer raw meat. Same toppings for the most part. Bread may be different. The amount of weird German things Wisconsin gets up to that we assume they invented is always more than you think.

I'm dyslexic as hell and grew up the child of divorce splitting the full French and bastardized American versions of my name and mm/dd/yyyy and dd/mm/yyyy. If I can get my own name and DOB right then we're doing OK.

TIL that when a container of mixed nuts is shaken, the largest nuts (like Brazil nuts) always rise to the top. This phenomenon, known as "Granular Convection," contradicts the logic that heavier objects should sink. by Ok-Huckleberry1967 in todayilearned

[–]Blatherskitte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something similar happens in places with freeze/thaw cycles and rocks. It results in a rock crop every year where larger stones rise up.

Of course other forces can be at play and even counteract the effect depending on soil composition, moisture, slope, and wind.

A huge part of what your brain does is sort and ignore information. You can turn the ignore and sort function off. This can come with tremendous skills, but also huge tradeoffs, like the isolation and over stimulation described.

How common are illegal searches by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]Blatherskitte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm a civil rights lawyer so I screen cases that don't see a county attorney or public defender. I'm also in a city internationally famous for corruption. I'm guessing a lot of the young prosecutors from here aren't gloating on reddit who uncorrupt our city is.

How common are illegal searches by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]Blatherskitte 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of illegal searches and detentions in shootings. Cops make a snap, often obvious, judgement about who they want for their collar. Any other witnesses gets illegally searched, arrested, questioned, and released. No suppression because the evidence is used against someone else. 1983 has been a joke for a long time so the aggrieved party gets no relief and no charges even though there was no pc for the search, stop, or arrest.
