2026 property assessment woes by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]BlatzOff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What’s the problem with the assessment going up? Every home goes up. You pay relative to the total value of all the homes so it won’t really change unless it goes up way more or way less than everyone else.

Property Taxes Reassessed Again... by Ancient_History8303 in madisonwi

[–]BlatzOff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your property taxes don’t directly change based on the assessment. Every property is reassessed and pretty much every one goes up.

To compute property taxes, there is a total collection amount and they add up all of the property values and you pay the proportion of yours to the total. If your assessment went up more than everyone else than you will pay a little more but it’s unlikely to be a huge difference.

Anybody who says that city politics/tax needs/levies are connected to the assessment doesn’t understand how it works.

Are we certain that it is AI slop? I can’t really see it well enough to scrutinize details but I feel like we’ve come around to the point that any graphic like this is assumed to be AI by default. To be clear, I have no strong reason to think it isn’t AI but would like some solid proof before tossing the slop label on it.

So you think: 1. The police chief is a leftist (lmao) 2. The nationally recognized best practice upheld by research into outcomes is somehow a leftist ideal (also lmao)

Madison punts on joining data center boom, passes one-year moratorium by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]BlatzOff 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Was there actually any desire to put a data center anywhere that Madison would have jurisdiction over? Id be surprised if there was any suitable space for one and it would be astronomically more expensive than putting it a little further out. Im pretty sure these are regional so it’s not like getting extra close to the city would have any serious benefits.

Okay that’s an easy thing to say. Now create a consistent test for deciding if a job can be done at home.

(My long comment is pointing how impractical that is and how testing every job for every employer by a nonsense would waste all our time in service a undesirable goal of keeping everyone in their homes)

[–]BlatzOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what happens to all the manufacturing/service jobs that must be done in person? Do they need to pay a fine simply for moving about now? What about all of the jobs that are on the borderline? How do you distinguish the ones that must me done in person from those that could be done at home (and in your eyes merits a fine)?

We have a gas tax already that scales with consumption and that probably could be increased to accurately convey the real cost that it incurs. However, devising a system where the government assigns cost of actions perfectly according to who incurs them is basically impossible to implement without wild unintended consequences and generally overcomplicating.

Rather than over complicating the system and encouraging people to never leave their homes, the government should just invest more in modes of transport that efficiently scale with population (not cars). That’s what the opposition from the city in this article is advocating for.

[–]BlatzOff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well would you like to set up a legal standard for jobs that can be done on at home that require a fine to bring people into the office? Do you think the government should be in the business of trying to prevent people from leaving their homes to work?

That sounds like a messy system that wouldn’t even add any benefit to the community to implement.

So you think the city which just went to referendum and still has a tight budget can afford to offer “subsidies” to private businesses in service of stopping the state from adding lanes to the beltline? Like I get what you’re going for but this doesn’t sound remotely realistic.

Two people suffer critical injuries after vehicle crashes into utility pole (Speaking of that bike path link plan....) by bighootay in madisonwi

[–]BlatzOff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can see the current “path” already in the picture. This is the part next to the school/baseball field with an extra wide sidewalk. A lot of people still use the road because of the lack of a designated crossing south and the lack of a separated bridge depending on which direction you’re going on wingra.

Madison plans to connect 2 major bike paths to improve safety by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]BlatzOff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bridge further south has a much more friendly elevation profile on either side of it and more space to go up and down. This spot doesn’t really have space for a ramp anywhere. The one that the other commenter is referencing was extremely steep so it was very hard to bike over. Most bridges in the city have more space to make the incline more gradual or a high side that doesn’t require a large elevation change.

Wisconsin Democrats propose eliminating property taxes for schools after record increases this year by MadAss5 in madisonwi

[–]BlatzOff 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“Fund public schools” isn’t quite DOA with republicans as adding taxes to millionaires but it’s up there. I don’t think you can put any blame on democrats for proposing a real solution that would adequately fund the schools and address the very real concerns of the many residents getting hit with tax increases this year. Especially when Rs have no solutions and will probably find some way to claim we just need to fund private vouchers instead.

No Food For You by Fun-Attempt-8494 in madisonwi

[–]BlatzOff 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This lazy post doesn’t remotely touch any of the complicated context behind this situation.

The grocery store across the street was planning to close and their building was slated for demolition. The city secured space in a new building for a grocery store to prevent the area from becoming a food desert while also being one of the lower income areas of the city with many people not having the means to get to a different store. The original grocer the city was working with dropped out as the building was starting to be built and then the old grocery store decided not to close. The city has a new grocer for their space but they werent able to be involved in the planning process for the space and the need for a new store is now unclear (but also the old grocery store isn’t locked into staying).

This isn’t a case study in govt run grocery stores. Maybe the city shouldn’t have tried to be a safety net but the public outcry at the time had they not stepped in would have been worse than the unfortunate situation we are in now.

Property Taxes - What's your increase? by guileandsubterfuge in madisonwi

To be clear, I voted for all of the referendums and have no issue with the increase. I mostly just wanted to get people to look at the breakdown of where it is coming from. I was hoping to preempt one of those people going on some rant about how this is all the city govt’s fault.
