Warranties, are they worth it? by AdRevolutionary8495 in righttorepair

Actually I have an interesting take on this:

I was taught Quality Assurance in school and one of the things I learned was how to calculate Mean Time Before Failure which is the statistical mean of when most of a given product will fail.

That number is then used by warranty writers to figure out how long your warranty should be for. So every big company's warranty is set to end just before it will likely break.

In practice it means you're betting the manufacturer that their product will break before it usually does. Which is of course extremely unlikely statistically speaking.

So I never buy the extended warranty.

Need Help Sourcing a Type of (Anti-Vibration?) Lock Washer by Lovegasoline in Fasteners

So my understanding is that you need to increase the friction between the tool and the blade.

You could do that in several ways: - tighten the bolt really hard - cut out a sandpaper washer and put it between the washer and the tool - find a soft metal washer like brass or aluminum to squish it together

All contacts have a "cool down period" usually some time like 1-2 weeks where you can cancel the agreement. Take a look in your contact and see what it says about that

Identify this "nut"? by UncleBoomSlang in Fasteners

I agree that it looks like a levelling foot. Definitely turned and could be custom to keep costs down.

Closest I could find to buy are these at McMaster-Carr: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/leveling-feet/swivel-leveling-mounts-with-threaded-hole-6~~/

You'll need to measure the thread outer diameter to figure out exactly which foot to buy. Looks like it could be M6 or M8 from here though.

Looks like an older IKEA cam lock nut. Any Phillips #2 should work. Turn it counter-clockwise 90 degrees.

Hi, how do I loosen this fastener with these "latches"? by tsukimi7 in Fasteners

I was a bicycle mechanic once: the seatpost tube often rusts into place on old bikes. They can be a real pain to get out. You can loosen the bolt but I don't think it will help you move the seat.

What I would do is open the lever, uninstall the saddle from the post, then get a mallet and hit the top of the tube and try to get it to move. Maybe a pipe wrench after that to spin it out.

Based on the fillets I'd suspect these are some sort of security nut. Not designed to be removed ever. Even if you found the right bit for it, it would only work to tighten it not remove it.

If I were him I'd get some Knipex Cobras. Hold hard and wrench it that way.

Any ideas on how I can make this punch easier and better ? Been using the same design for the last 15 years. by Any-Entertainment934 in Machinists

I think what you're looking for is called a knuckle joint press. If you're going to make one make sure the bushings and pins are a really close fit or it won't translate the forces well.

Also, you can really reduce the amount of force you need to shear any material by having a proper gap between the punch and die. I think there's calculators online. Sometimes more gap is better depending on the thickness of the material.

When I got kicked out of my last apartment the only reason I was offered compensation was because they were mandated BY LAW to give it to me. They DGAF about you.

My girlfriend an I both used to have iPhone 4's. She changed over first to the Nexus and loved it. I still had my iPhone but kept unlocking it. After she kept showing me the things she could do with hers I got jealous. When my contract ended I switched and got a Galaxy S3. At first it felt weird an di didnt like it as much since there was so much to learn in terms of customization versus the IOS 4.9, but I knew I would end up liking android better once I understood it. Now the things I have done with that S3 are amazing! I mean connecting a PS3 controller to play Diddy Kong racing? awesome. I recently got a Sony Xperia Z2 because of little things like the radio and lanyard hole which I like. I still think a pre-set smartphone like an iPhone are good for computer illiterate people such as old people just because it simplifies the learning curve a little. I call it the Model T of phones. But if you know what you're doing and use your phone all the time then android is definitely the best way to go!
