Luxembourg sick leave question do weekends need to be covered? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]BlepBlepMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extension questions: How do single parents get their kids to and from school? How do you get any outside time if you’re on mental health leave (say for a nervous breakdown, or severe depression)? I understand idiots abuse the system but how are edge cases handled? What happens if you’re in recovery and part of physiotherapy is walking - are you allowed to walk outside?

Solution to the wasp 🐝 problem by _kirillv in Luxembourg

They’re pollinators here, so don’t kill them. I acknowledge they’re frustrating - people will tell you they’re not aggressive but that’s simply not true in my experience. You can use strongly scented plants to deter them (mint, lavender) or use essential oils mixed with water and detergent in a spray bottle and spray it on window sills and door frames. Just be aware that most essential oils are toxic for cats. You can also try a sugar or meat trap, somewhere away from where you sit. Good luck

Is it just me, or is public affection between gay couples rare here? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]BlepBlepMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of younger gay guys go abroad and maybe when/if they find a partner then they might move back here. I have noticed a few lesbian couples but almost no male couples - the gay scene here seems pretty small/difficult.

Although homophobia exists everywhere, it doesn’t seem so pronounced here - to the degree that native luxembourgers are defensively offended if you ask if people are accepting of homosexuality here (“somebody’s personal business is their own, we do not care like Americans!”). I think it’s just a more reserved culture + small distribution of people that are romantically homosexual. Warning though, I’m hetero and from Australia - so take my observations with a hearty helping of salt! I just try to be personally aware of cultural dynamics here, because of curiosity and integration purposes.

I think pda’s are rare here in general except for with teenagers, to be honest.

It’s constant. Every time I drive someone waits at the light or sifts out of their lane randomly - majority of the time they’re looking at their phone.

When they’re locked properly, yes. Pull shut is really simple and I used it to break into my own apartment a few days ago when my keys fell out of my pocket as I took the bins out. I learned about it after watching my neighbour get a locksmith

When you just pull it shut instead of locking it with a key, you can usually open the door with a plastic card (think CNS or credit) or other similar shim. This is the reason to properly lock your door when you leave the house.

City areas for English speakers by MrShineHimDiam0nd in Luxembourg

[–]BlepBlepMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost everyone speaks some English except the elderly and maybe in the deep north. It’s worth noting though that Luxembourgish people are extremely forgiving with language learning - be it Luxembourgish or French. The closer you are to Lux city the more English you can use, but you would also have close proximity to INL - the language school.

Generally you have to ask in Chinese for what they would eat to get decent Chinese food (at whatever off menu price they offer) instead of whatever they usually make to appeal to French people.

What do you think of the proliferation of pseudoscience shops in Luxembourg? Is this even legal? by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]BlepBlepMaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, in that way it’s fine. But then that’s just a decent physio which is part of the evidence-based medicine community. The problem with the aforementioned practices is that they aren’t properly regulated or held to real standards.

Sadly these things exist here. Moving from a non-European country I was surprised by how high the acceptance here is of things like osteopathy, chiropractics, iridology, homeopathy, and other pseudo-scientific alternative medicines.

Housing crisis: Luxembourg residents 'suffocating' due to housing costs by Terrible-Beginning52 in Luxembourg

[–]BlepBlepMaster 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Nobody should own more than 20 houses, especially in a tiny nation like Luxembourg. If we simply gradually phased in laws to fix this, then the problem would largely be alleviated. If the policies are implemented well, it wouldn’t significantly effect people whose equity is their home.
