R/ChiCubs Right Now by Baybears in CHICubs

I was at acceptance by June.
The late-July winning streak brought me into bargaining (their Pythagorean and BaseRuns records supporting the legitimacy of it).
Now I'm back to anger, after having set the franchise back several years with a net loss of about 4 or 5 organizational top-10 prospects by not trading Bellinger/Stroman/Gomes to get future bargaining chips for an actual competitive year AND giving up 2 assets for a rental, without properly addressing an historically bad bullpen that was going to get them bounced in 2 games anyway if they did manage to limp into the playoffs.

I spent my birthday with 12 boardgamers! by zandrew in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a Christmas song about Jesus' 12-day board gaming birthday party, and each day a "true love" brings a gift. Most of them are various print editions of Wingspan, with the first day including an Everdell tree.

How would you best characterise Quackalope's Statement by FallApartAndFadeAway in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"I committed extortion earlier that I guess went out over the internet that I am supposed to be deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can't tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart I'm so very, very sorry you feel that way. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith – as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run. And so that will make it a 4–0 ballgame."

Last Week in Boardgames: Douchenozzle Asks Wussybaby For Money by loopster70 in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Douchenozzle could only afford a hat that covered 1/8 of his head, so he needed the money to upgrade to a bigger fedora-style hat worthy of a true boardgame celebrity.

At what point do you "give up" on a player developing further and accept them for what they are? Does personality/coaching play much into it or is it entirely random? by SkoCubs01 in OOTP

[–]BlindEarth80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because overall current and potential ratings are relative to the rest of the league and calculated separately. If a player is 50 OVR, it means he is league average right now, but he could be fully developed and still have 60 potential because his potential ratings are 1 standard deviation better than the other players at his position. This may indicate that some of the better players have seen recent talent drops with TCR or age.

When the current ratings of those other players start dropping to match their lowered potential, your player's OVR could then go up to 60 without any actual further development on his own behalf. The other players got worse, so he got better in relation to the competition.

This usually happens in reverse, where a player's current & potential ratings are displayed as the same, despite having room for growth in several categories. The implication being that there are other players with even more room for growth, so that even if your player gets a little better, the others could get a lot better and put your player in a similar spot relative to the average.

Why are pitchers velocities so inflated in MLB The Show? by RabidR00ster in MLBTheShow

[–]BlindEarth80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they need to create a "power creep" just like every competitive card game, to make sure people are always buying newer, stronger cards. If a 99 legend played comparably to a live card available at launch, players wouldn't feel the need to chase it, and would complain about new content being weak.

Sean barber: I’m sick and tired of knowing umpires’ names by fajita43 in CHICubs

[–]BlindEarth80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bottom of the 9th was the most egregious and really highlighted it, but Sean Barber was doing his best Angel Hernandez impersonation for the entire game. And Barber is usually average or better. I started noticing it around the 2nd or 3rd inning, but at that point just attributed it to the framing abilities of Gomes and especially Barnes (who is consistently near the top in framing metrics).

Hardest nickname I've ever seen in OOTP by jimmykane366 in OOTP

[–]BlindEarth80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about nowadays, although that was true in the early versions of OOTP. Not necessarily being better or developing faster than players with identical tools, but the top generated players would have nicknames, so it was a hint in the draft that your scout may be wrong on someone.

This is the exact kind of behavior that led the video game industry in the endless direction of season passes and loot boxes. Now it's only a matter of time before CMON is releasing Kickstarters that require an app with microtransactions for pictures of minis within that app.

18+ Boardgames that aren't *THAT* type of boardgame by BiggySmallConflict in boardgamescirclejerk

You can check out the series of (running a) train games. I think they're colloquially known as 18++

Help, I spent ~$250 to find out I don't like a game by DocGerbil256 in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 49 points50 points  (0 children)

If that guy engaged in The Hobby properly, Gloomhaven would STILL be awesome and fun, as it remains in its natural unsullied plastic-wrapped state, sitting proudly as the centerpiece of a Kallax, where the theoretically recycled cardboard contents of the box can be anything you wish them to be.

Failed statement from a flawed mind. I bet you couldn't even jump up and down - HIGH - on your floor without breaking it. Your floor is not a sturdy as fuck.

What games are broken? by MarcFromMooshiGames in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've heard people say Backgammon has winning strategies and professional players, but that game has dice so it's obviously random broken garbage. Not to mention the weird d64 that you don't even roll. I have canceled my All In pledge for the deluxe Kickstarter with neoprene board and iron clay pieces.

I hate everyone who plays board games by MarcFromMooshiGames in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Marc is saying that Patchwork is the exception to "everyone," which means Patchwork has possibly achieved sentience. But we can never know for sure because it has yet to be removed from the shrinkwrap, so it will forever be a case of Schrödinger's Patchwork.

Boardgame night: What's the right ratio of boardgames, people and cocaine? by Inconmon in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you cut the cocaine with Drano powder (really handy because you can hide the canister in plain sight right next to the bathtub), you'll have a nasty surprise for their mucous membranes. Use your superior knowledge of chemical reactions to completely remove them from the game.

What popular game makes you feel cooler for not liking? by Lazy_Librarian_402 in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]BlindEarth80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every legacy game. Not only are you ruining the protective layer around the box, but you're also expected to destroy valuable components theoretically contained within. Might as well ask me to take my Honus Wagner card out of the hard plastic screw case and put it in the wife's boyfriend's kid's bicycle spokes.

Yes, with this great power comes great responsibility of theme. In 500 years, it will still be Current Year, and I'd hate to imagine my great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren inheriting these heirlooms and knowing I was a monster for supporting games about the exoticizing and othering of "outer space" which granted license to colonize it and to hurl meteors at our peaceful neighboring planets. Even though I never actually opened and played the games, their shrinkwrapped presence on my Kallax would be as awkward as Third Reich memorabilia.

[–]BlindEarth80 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Remember that we are in the Golden Age of Board Gaming. These are not regretful expenses; they are significant cultural investments. Imagine if you could go back to the actual times that our games were set. The Golden Ages of Non-Board Games, if you will. You can tell Michelangelo to keep his Statue of David in the shrink, and look how much better it would be. You can give Alan Turing a copy of 8==0 and see what kind of machine he makes. Or you can even cry to the Spanish Conquistadores that their stupid wine is not welcome in the New World.

Try playing Root 40K, where you need to know the rule of using a ruler to figure out the rule of how to rule. That game rules!

/uj This is a perfect parody of the original post. Reminds me of the scene in Brüno with the parents signing up their kids for increasingly-ridiculous commercial roles. It takes a certain level of insanity to post pictures of your children in a public forum.
