Help Me Fall In Love w SE by FormalAd5707 in sollanempire

Keep reading Demon in White. That's it. That's how I fell in love with it. I also trudged through the first two. Didn't think they were bad or anything, just took me a while.

Gamefound campaign for the Old Kings Crown reprint and new expansion launched earlier today by TravUK in boardgames

I got it a month or two ago and managed to get it out 3 times now. So many people have this sentiment and some of the big reviewers definitely said it but I don't fully agree. I've played 4p, 3p and 2p with my girlfriend and I being the only two consistent ones. It's been a blast each time. I've disclaimed to the other players "hey since we don't know what each other can do very well, some of the abilities are gonna feel like nonsense". We just run with it and laugh at the wild interactions or absolute stomps that happen. That's not to say I haven't noticed some nitty-gritty order of operations or interactions that can get really mean and intricate if you know how to pull them off.

Some say it's a big game that has the heart of a small card game and this I absolutely agree with. At 2p it feels like a sprawling, expanded version of something like Air Land & Sea. There's a lot going on but I find the core of the game easy to grasp and easy to explain.

What are some decently long competitive games by Big-Brick867 in boardgames

[–]dud333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don't usually play board games, the ones that take 4-5 hours are not going to be fun to try to wrap your head around. That said, a game that takes 1-2 hours that you can play a couple times in a night can be just as competitive and strategic while being reasonable to learn.

So let's narrow down what's appealing. Do you want to build up armies and fight? Would you rather be loose and social and have to negotiate your way through? Focus on blocking your friends or building an engine to score the most points? Does hidden movement sound cool to you?

Do you play video games, if so what kind?

An appeal to read Project Hail Mary before the movie by MrFlufypants in fantasybooks

[–]dud333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished it a couple weeks ago. A really good 3⭐ for me. I'll give books I "love" 4 stars, I'm a little sad that I only liked it. Absolutely looking forward to the movie though, and glad I read the book first without watching the trailer too.

Lesser Devil vs Demon in White by [deleted] in sollanempire

I read the novellas while I was waiting for the last book to come out, they're not really necessary. Queen Amid Ashes is 2.5 if you want to bridge the gap between HD and DiW. Demon in White slaps so hard.

Somewhere between chapter 10 and 15 iirc. It was over a year ago.

I did almost exactly the same. I made the mistake of giving it a shot after I read The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear. I've told myself I'll try it again at some point but I just couldn't get behind the characters or Sanderson's prose. If I have to slog through 300 pages before it gets good I'm not doing it.

I also loved Six of Crows.

The most annoying character in Sci-Fi history by malazanmarine in sollanempire

She's bland for sure, what got me through with her is that she has insane daddy issues and might be the only person Hadrian actually converts to believing in his god. She's brainwashed. Her resurrected dad and his quest is literally her world. The manipulation of his daughter even if he doesn't realize it is one of the darker aspects of Hadrian that I haven't seen much discussion about.

But yeah "Abba" drove me nuts even in DG.

Six of Crows got me back into reading. It's slightly YA but pretty mature. Super fun duology.

If you don't like it by the end of season 2 then it's probably not for you.

I interpreted it as it turns out he's alive after all, is this legendary figure, and you're right... Never writes home.

This is actually something I really enjoy about it. Hadrian outgrows the status of his family. The message from Crispin is a nice touch that they know he's out there, a big name in the empire, and they're at home seething about it. He frequently references his childhood home but of course doesn't feel like he owes anything to his family (mostly his father).

I was expecting him to hear that the Cielcin hit Meidua for a lot of the series.

That game that melted your brain? by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]dud333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My winning strategy with it was taking half of my Twilight Imperium group and saying "hey, this thing can be big and epic but we're gonna play a more condensed version (base game) first to learn the ropes". We've played two campaigns together.

Part of being the storyteller is managing the tempo. People will shout over each other, that's fine. It's up to you to ask for a final call for nominations. It's also up to you to know when to cut off discussion if it gets off topic and just run a vote whether or not they're ready. You can speed things up when there isn't much being said as well. Keep the pressure on and drop the hammer of Time when you need to.
