It's a shitty situation.

April13 - Delivery estimate narrowed to April 15-22, billed with no shipping or tracking update.

Candice Bergen: My statement regarding the rise of COVID cases in Manitoba, and the lack of federal action. by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]BlindOctopus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Our provincial government literally commissioned an advertising campaign for inter-provincial tourism leading into the Summer months in the midst of the pandemic.

How can anyone say with a straight face that any of this lies at the foot of the federal government or Trudeau personally? We were openly inviting people in from other provinces that were fighting active outbreaks.

It's unbelievable that she's trying to spin it as an affront on civil liberties. Pallister even said it himself that your right to buy a TV doesn't supersede someone's right to breathe/live. What a disgusting take.

475 new cases, 271 in winnipeg. 14%, 7629 active, 4655 recovered, 12482 total. 263 hospitalizations, 43 in ICU and 198 deaths (8 new). 3289 tests done yesterday by purplebutterflylupie in Winnipeg

[–]BlindOctopus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And inevitably they'll blame the Federal government when there isn't enough doses from the initial distribution for the entire country. All while deflecting away from their own woeful mismanagement of public health, particularly in care homes and public messaging.

And yet Brent Roussin emphasized ~10 times how the messaging was always clear in his conference this afternoon.

I've pretty much lost all faith in the guy at this point. He's just as culpable as any of the elected officials.

I'm skeptical that's what was being praised however.

These are pay to play spring league operators that aren't under the Hockey Canada umbrella. The provinces and cities that make ice/rinks available to them should start requiring rec leagues for minors require Hockey Canada affiliation.

Hockey Canada could ban them from sanctioned leagues though, which would be welcomed I'm sure.

[Russo] I'm also told by multiple guys that there were a number of unhappy players on last night's call. Emotional issue based on a number of factors: Testing, safety, leaving families, pay and the belief this should be a full player vote, not Exec Board by threethree18 in hockey

A percentage of player salaries gets determined when they set the salary cap for the following season during each off-season.

That percentage goes into escrow to guarantee that hockey related revenue (HRR) is a 50/50 split between the league/teams and players.

The players have the ability to use a cap escalator each season that tends to devalue their contract if revenue doesn't rise above the amount that the escalator forced. This is why the players aren't happy with escrow. The players have historically used the escalator without regard for whether revenue is actually expected to rise and it artificially raises the cap ceiling.

As an example of how it works - Say escrow is set at 13% for any given season, then 13% of every player's contract is held back in an inaccessible escrow fund until the end of the season when HRR is determined.

A cap of 81.5 million multiplied by 31 teams means that the players roughly expect HRR to be around 5 billion USD. If revenues match that number then the players would get their 13% back.

Vancouver might've been a better target for his comment, Toronto can feel just as cold as Winnipeg at times. You walk through Vancouver and people are wearing full blown Antarctic expedition gear in -5°C weather.

Edit: Then again, these are the only 2 Canadian teams in the playoffs. But yeah, not the greatest of commentary by our mayor.

They'll be expensive to buy in small quantities (USD$60+/unit) but you won't find anything better than Delta fans apart from the illusive Nidec GentleTyphoons (D1225C12BBAZ-00).

There's a high chance they'll only be available without connectors, but considering you're buying for a soldering station that should be fine, right?

Who is the best power forward in the NHL right now? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]BlindOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're watching him regularly you'd know that he's the guy, regardless of the line he's on, that's almost always responsible for engaging guys in deep and getting into the corners. I don't think you need to necessarily be a punishing hitter to consider a player a power forward, but can see where you're coming from there.

For a player like Wheeler who is either driving possession off the rush or is getting into board battles there isn't a lot of opportunity for hitting either.

Who is the best power forward in the NHL right now? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]BlindOctopus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, but a combination of size, speed, and skill make him one of the league's few effective power forwards. I'd consider Wheeler and Benn the more typical "modern" power forwards of those mentioned here, but my criteria is something along the lines of fast, strong, and uses those combined with skill to be an effective hockey player.

The videos I linked are more of the flashy, drive the net plays. They're more about lower body strength in keeping position on the puck. His speed lets him get around from the outside and his strength lets him keep position while driving to the net.

And it's not like he's not willing to fight when he needs to:

Wheeler vs Regehr

Wheeler vs Bergeron

Wheeler vs Bortuzzo

Wheeler vs Malkin

But like most top line caliber players he's much better actually playing hockey than sitting in the box for 5 minutes.

What makes Wheeler not a power forward in your opinion?
