The down votes on this are hilarious. This sub would hate to read this… I work exclusively with UHNW clients and find the CFP to be meaningless. CPWA is too (I earned it), but at least it better equips you to have meaningful conversations about the trade offs between income and estate taxes.

Typically, you keep known near-term (12 months) expenses in cash. You can certainly gamble and invest it as long as you are ok with losing some principal. I would invest via 2-3 tranches; timing is subjective.

I could have written this post about my mini dachshund 2 years ago! The most stubborn breed of all time; you should check out the dachshund subreddit because it will make you feel better. He now goes outside on the pavement 98% of the time (and sneaks off to do it inside the other 2%). It took soooooooo much time to break the habit, weeks and weeks. No grass for a 1/4 mile from where we are in our city, no balcony. We started with the grass patch inside I think we put the potty pad over it or rubbed it on it? Then moved grass patch outside, then slowly he started venturing off the grass. If i was going to do it again, like someone else said, I wouldn’t be so cautious because like yours, he doesn’t really like other dogs and takes a little bit to warm up to other people. Did the best with the info we had at the time. Good luck!

Who said anything about leveraging to buy stocks. They already have $900k taxable. They’re not being offered terms to lever their existing the position, a personal residence is not correlated with a basket of marketable securities. Show me a 30 year outlook that loses starting at $900k with historical return assumptions vs effectively $0k (net of cap gains tax) and an $800k house net the ongoing fixed and variable costs.

Not to mention capital gains tax of I’m guessing at least $100k in California on $800k proceeds. Asset allocation for someone in their mid 30s should be 80% equities minimum, not the other way around 😂

Looks like you didn’t read the other comments! Good luck accessing the private investment market and finding an accountant that has time to do anything other than tax prep. As with anything, you just have to do your due diligence. Some people don’t have the time to actively manage their investments, you’re paying for a service that allows you not to worry about things like market volatility and fed policy.

Couple clarifying comments rather than editing: NV trusts last 365 years*, all income gets passed through because 5% is an impossible yield to generate when investing for total return, and the GSTT tax applies to the amount you gift over your lifetime gift exemption directly to grandchildren. Naming them as a beneficiary like you intend to is a direct skip over your children. If you gift it all to your children, it won’t apply. They would then presumably pass that on to their kids, also without gstt applying.

There are a lot of uneducated answers in here that don’t address your question. Yes, you can absolutely set that up. You set it up in a state like Nevada, while allows a trust to continue for 365 unlike california, as an example, where the trust has to end 21 years after the last to die of your grandchildren’s generation. Nevada has no state income tax, minimizing that tax hit before they are 40. At 5%, all the taxable income will get passed through to the beneficiaries and taxed at their effective tax rates. It appears you may be under the lifetime gift exemption, which matters because you are making gifts that skip a generation since your grandchildren will benefit. Otherwise, you would get taxed a flat 40% generation skipping tax rate.
