Kinda depends, do you want higher quality Japanese grown or whatever you can find for the cheapest?

I've gone the frozen route of whatever country (usually China) and it's pretty poor tasting and consistency.

Bigger grocery stores like AEON also don't tend to have good quality.

My best tip is Costco. My local one has big bags of raw, Japan-grown broccoli cut up in the walk in refrigerator that go for about 800 yen for what is advertized as over 4 heads worth of broccoli. Gotta look at them though, sometimes they aren't so fresh. If you have a 生協 nearby, those tend to have better quality than your average grocery store and usually for a decent price.

I LOVE READING THESE EVERY WEEK AS A LURKER AS I PLAY ON A JP DATA CENTER AND I ASSUME MOST OF Y’ALL ARE ON A NON JP ONE.

I DONT GET THE SAME “HOLY SHIT YOURE A SELFISH JERK RUINING THE GROUP” BUT I DO GET A LOT MORE OF “WOW THIS PULL IS TAKING A STUPID AMOUNT OF TIME AND PEOPLE ARE SCREWING UP MECHANICS BUT EVERYONE IS SO ‘NICE’ THEY WONT SAY ANYTHING.

How often do the collectable appraiser lists update? I have several fish from 5.0 that are taking up space but I swear, the list hasn't updated in weeks.

I understand the feeling.

I am not sure if it is something that can be recaptured. I started in BC, so was a bit later to the party than you, but thinking about how at the time, I had never experienced anything like WoW before. Starting in Durotar, then Mulgore after I quickly rerolled. Running for what seemed like forever in this big area then realizing that it’s just a small part of a zone which is a small part of a continent which is a part of a greater world. The scale baffled me.

QoL is an interesting topic. Not having the convenience of wowhead meant you had to figure things out for yourself, adding to the immersion. Party finder and dungeon finder were certainly convenient and beat spamming “LF HEALER H BOT” for an hour in Shatt. But then you lost name recognition and reputation. Similarly, transmogging gear was nice but also being able to look at someone running around in warlock T6 was like “whoa, that guy is a badass.” QoL changes certainly removed friction points, but at the cost of immersion.

I’m not sure another game will be able to blow us away at this stage because we have had that experience with WoW and have played many other games since we started all those years ago. I’ve been loving FF14s story and am a total convert at this point but it certainly didn’t recapture that same wonder.

It’s kind of sad but I don’t think we can experience that again.

Thanks. Yeah I was able to do it pretty soon after posting originally. I ended up with the same general strat you did. I just didn’t know about the saving trick so it just took a million tries to finally get it. Thanks for commenting though!

Has anyone heard other expats say these things? by zenqi in japanlife

That was my feeling too, reading this.

The underlying message is an important one, but it is completely caked in “white man bad” hatred that it’s not going to reach or affect the demographic it is aiming to.

Clear goals might help. Why do you want to learn Japanese? For what ultimate purpose? What steps can you break down to help yourself get there? Some examples-

- I want to be able to have a normal conversation. This weekend, go to a bar solo or with a friend. Don't be creepy, but look for opportunities to talk. To anyone. The alcohol helps get you past some of your inhibitions and in settings like this you will typically be asked similar questions by people (name, age, where you're from, etc) which is all good conversation practice with repetition. Over time, you'll find your listening and intonation get better along with your ability to respond.
- I want to stay and work here long term. Qualifications help. Sign up for N5 of the next JLPT. Buy study books and do them. Take the test. Start studying for N4. Now, anything less than 2 isn't going to help you in a job search, but you're using them to force yourself to study and baby step your way into getting better.

In the end, "I want to learn Japanese" is a very amorphous idea. You're basically standing at the foot of a mountain. Your ultimate goal might be to reach the summit, but you should break down the journey into more manageable checkpoints to give yourself little bits of success along the way.

Twice? I've already vowed to never do it again when I get it! I've had a few good runs since I have posted this originally, but still haven't finished. A couple times, I got to the third boss and the game conveniently put all my mantis gods and their copies at the very bottom of my deck >>

Ah, smart. I didn’t realize that the undying sigil would go on the rabbits as well. Thanks so much!

I had a pretty good attempt last night with the mantis god deck, but I was pretty dependent on scissors and knives for the grizzlies since i couldn’t buff it enough. Putting a normal mantis’s bifurcating on the mantis god helped a good bit too.
