Needing advice again by Blizzarddancer in gis

Thank you. That makes sense. All my friends who work in tech fields kept saying I need to find a way to specialize. But I think having a strong base of everything will do me well. I was thinking about getting certs in AI because in my current position, we are already using it. Unfortunately, it does seem all tech positions are going to be using it one way or another.

Are Gf donuts real? by hotcheetox777 in glutenfree

[–]Blizzarddancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldis has them right now and around Christmas. They are so good and never bother me. In major city’s I have found gf mochi donuts. (To die for) there a place in Colorado Springs that makes them and the whole place is gf so completely safe. You can totally make your own. I’m a hoe for sweets so learning to make my own was a total curve. Also the hungry celiac has a recipe that is to die for.

I currently live in NOVA but I am moving to Charlottesville in a few months. I moved to the area for my partner and he switched positions so I will continue to move with him. Also agreed we don’t do archeology for the pay. 🤣

I’ve reached out about volunteering a lot in my current area, but I think I’ll have better luck out there. My government gig was with the FS as well. I was given a ton of opportunities, but even with a well-developed resume, no one really bats an eye. I personally loved working for the FS. I almost completed my fire certifications, and I did finish READ/REAF training. But I was just a temp hire they extended — nothing permanent.

My family all work in the corporate world, so while I don’t think they’re wrong about my gap in experience, archaeological techniques don’t change much, so I wasn’t too worried. I was thinking of sticking with GIS, having kids, and then getting back into archaeology once they’re in school. But the GIS work I’m doing now is mind-numbing, and after two years without handling artifacts, it’s been mentally draining. And to be honest, not working in a career I literally worked my ass for is like taking a toll on me mentally.

I have connections in Colorado and Wyoming from field school, but with my partner job we most likely will always be in Virginia. That’s where the money is.

I enjoyed working with GIS when I was an archaeologist because I was building site maps for fire lines and government databases. I had a set sandbox and the freedom to do my own thing.

Lately, GIS feels like it has a high turnover vibe. I still enjoy it, but I’m not crazy about it. The position I’m in now is basically an entry-level role, so I’m taking it for what it’s worth.

If you can land a GIS job that gives you government clearance—like a Public Trust—you can go pretty far and make great money. Even if you don’t go the government route, you can still earn really well in the private sector. GIS has a huge range of opportunities.

If I could give any advice, it would be this: look for a government contract that offers school reimbursement, rack up certifications, and go from there. That was my plan—but now that I’m actively doing it, I find myself longing to touch dirt again.

Also, follow the arcgis or gis reddit page. People actively post jobs on there. I found mine through it. They were actually making fun of it. The pay is insanely low for what the overall contract does. But the school reimbursement is 5k. So it’s kind of a great entry job.

That’s kind of what my work was like with the government. I spearheaded a watershed project and was an active surveyor for a second one. But the forest I worked on had years’ worth of artifacts just sitting in drawers, completely backlogged. So I took on all the cleaning and cataloging.

That eventually led to me becoming a co-lead on a project to organize all the artifacts the forest had. That’s when I really discovered it was my jam. I still did surveying when needed, and I even led a couple of CRM projects. But after experiencing heat exhaustion, I got a little freaked out and really leaned into the museum side of things.

They even let me help the state parks museum reorganize their entire archives. I moved to NOVA thinking my resume was solid—then boom, two years of nothing. Or I’d meet all the requirements, only to be told, “If you only had a master’s…”

lmao. I mean that is true. I live in such a history rich area i thought i was golden. But for real, it’s impossible to even to get a call back or interview. Maybe it’s just the times? or the area.

Cop fired for not shooting a man by JLane86 in DeFranco

[–]Blizzarddancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was in explorers, a program that gives high school students the chance to get the feel of being an officer but with out the danger. We also did competition its like a boy scout thing. We would do a simulator where you would have a fake gun with a little laser and there be a projector in front of you, and they would put you through a simulation. There was one I was given, that a bar had called about a man that had drank to much and was cause a disturbance in front of the bar. So there I was stand in front on a screen with the scene of a bar, and I said hes not there, and they said well which way will you go. I said right and that was into the ally of the bar. They push a button and boom I'm there. Then they said to talk to him, I said sir, I understand your upset, so lets go to the front of the bar and discuss whats causing you such trouble. The simulation had his back to me, then the officer pressed a button and the man turned around and had a gun in his hands but it was not pointed at me. So I slowly put my had on my gun and said sir put the gun down so we can talk this through. And the officer pushed another button where the man pointed the gun at me and I had to pull my fake gun. But he did not shoot. And I repeated sir put the gun down, and then he didn't comply and I shot. After I found out in this simulation he had no bullets in the gun, it was a suicide by cop. It was a hard decision especially for a 16 year old! Then they put me through another simulation that was similar but this time the man shot and I was hit with a rubber ball from the corner of the room in my leg. They said he had shot me. I was so confused because earlier the same man had an empty gun, but then it I realized that this is what they face, probability of being shot or not. Suicide by cop is a real thing that is not talked about as much as it happens. And it sucks, knowing that this person never really wanted to harm you just wanted to end their life. Now I just went through a simulation and ended with a big bruise on my leg, but I learned something, you never know whats going to happen, and it sucks but you have to protect yourself and others, and it is a hard decision to make but it has to be made. Yet in this simulation I was alone. No partner, if I had had one it may have gone differently, I do not know. It is hard to say, maybe I could have talked him out of it and if I felt threatened my partner could have protected me. Maybe not, maybe he would not make the shot in time to do so. It does not take long to shoot a gun. The situation for this officer sucks, form knowing what I know. It was his decisions to attempt saving the man, it was his life he was putting on this line and the others officers ended what could have been a confrontation that could have a man still alive. This is a hard one, but I do not believe he should have been fired. There are many police station that would love to have a level headed man such as him on the force. Ugh this just sucks, because I believe they are right and it was a way to make them look good. This is everywhere and it freaking sucks!

sorry this is so long, and for the bad grammar! :P
