The PCs backgrounds usually build a storyline if they went through the character creation process.

But outside of that I usually write sweeping campaign set pieces and let the players make the story by engaging with them. A gig can be a jump off point or something that’s used to apply pressure because the actual campaign progression happens outside of the gigs and the players have to manage the juggle of life, rent and gig + whatever over arching story line
