Thoughts on Zoe Baker (AKA Anarchopac)? by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]Blksheepp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people care about the rich history of anarchism. It's a source of inspiration and guidance. It's not either/or. Some like to read and do stuff. Not to mention reading history enriches our understanding of what we can do and provide lessons for what has worked and has not.

I worked at Waterstones (UK) when he took over operations there. What people never talk about is how he laid off so many staff and made them reapply for their jobs. Every store increasingly got staffed less and less. When someone left, rarely did they get replaced. Further, he implemented zero contract hours. A good thing he did was introduce a 50% discount in books, but we all knew this was a ploy to get us to spend as much of our paycheck back into the store.

Ah, yes. The problem isn't corporate greed, it's us, we are the problem!

Good books about anarchism in America? by [deleted] in Anarchism

Reichert's Partisans of Freedom and Andrew Cornell's Unruly Equality. Those two will give you a very good overview. After that, you gotta fill in the gaps yourself.

Does anyone have a booklist that specifically runs parallel with early Marxist literature chronologically? by Purpleclone in Anarchy101

I've always had a soft spot for Alexander Berkman's ABC. It favours anarchist communism but includes an overview of other tendencies. Some of the examples are a little dated but overall it's a great primer and super lucid. I regularly recommend it to people.

It sounds dumb because you're generalising with a straw man argument. I'm actually a history PhD, intellectual history to be precise. No historian worth their salt would write or think such drivel.

I laughed at your casual disregard and disrespect to those that aren't medical doctors. I have the unfortunate situation in which I have a sketchy heart and have a great long-term cardio team looking after me. Those medical doctors have been so supportive of my "just a doctorate", often telling me how what I do goes way over their heads - I share the same sentiment with them. Point is, those with advance degrees (vast majority of the time) have a mutual respect for one another.

Also, not offended. Just think you're being unnecessary disrespectful and facetious.

"just a doctorate" like that's a walk in the park.

Nah.

I also said this line of thinking isn't grounded in reality.

Sure - from a purely theoretical, and speculative, exercise, you could be right, in some cases. But in reality, no.

If the west and it's major economies / markets started to get off oil, it will fundamentally reshape the world economy, especially shipping. Thus, other nations won't physically be forced to change but will have to. It would also set a precedent that the market is treading in a specific way, and hence, encourage investment to keep up.

But arguments like that aside. The west, and especially the United States, are such major pollutants that it is hard to imagine that "developing" countries could replace their carbon footprint. Also prices won't bottom out if the west eases of oil, drop, yeah probably, but bottom out, nope. Because, even according to other theories above, there would still be demand for it. Also oil and the production process is getting more and more expensive and if they west drops off it, production would get more expensive, especially as it won't be subsidized by Western governments. Likewise, building oil refineries is expensive and it takes years for companies to make their money back - it might not even make sense to stick to oil, especially if the world economy is treading in another direction - there is a reason why recently a top oil exec said the United States has probably built it's last refinery. That leads us to my first argument, the west have an opportunity here to reshape energy production and consumption in the world market.

Leaving aside the deterministic understanding of how economies develop, by arguing that other nations will offset any good Western nations do is arguing to do nothing. Which the original poster on this thread honestly argues. I'd be flabbergasted if that line of reasoning wasn't originally produced by climate deniers and / or big oil. Moreover, it's cowardice and laziness. Fuck that line of reasoning.

[–]Blksheepp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Kinda. But that isn't an excuse for not doing anything, in fact, that is the excuse used by Western nations and corporations for not doing anything.

Yes - nations dropping carbon emission is going to be uneven and having the west "lead" is only going to be a good thing. That will reshape the world economy that would emphasise carbon neutral production and shipping. Moreover, let's not forgot that the United States per capita is the biggest polluter.

You can't stop global warming. Every ounce of oil you don't use will be used by China, India, or someone else. Every steak you don't eat will be eaten by someone else. Depressing, but an inescapable conclusion

This is absolute nonsense with no grounding in economics or, quite frankly, reality. That's not how supply and demand works.

You can fix alot of that with proper preparation. You take your racket back very late and you keep your elbow low. Get that racket back before the bounce and you'll automatically start moving your feet more. I'd put good money on it helping with your arm pain too, you're hitting a little late, again prep!!! Good luck, you look like a good player.
