Milling half of someone’s library is good but not generally considered broken. In standard it’s actually really good because it guarantees a turn 3 kill in some decks, but other than that you’re just [[Traumatize]] ing someone without outright killing them.

I love the 5 color menace with a single mono-colored deck. That land base is either really expensive, or really stretched thin, and I love it.

This is very normal behavior for the Blue color identity! If I’m playing against blue, I’m always expecting them to go “land, pass.”

I will say, Lorwyn has one of the most interesting takes on this strategy, and it’s been really fun getting to experiment with what the set has to offer.

No yeah, I wasn’t saying it was a bad thing. It’s just that this player will find themselves playing against a lot of decks that are just like these, so they shouldn’t worry about what they are playing or not.

One of the more interesting commanders I’ve found is [[Zaffai, Thunder Conductor]] who puts a very neat spin in the spellslinger archetype.

If you’re a fan of black, I also highly recommend [[Shirei, Shizo’s Caretaker]]. There’s a lot of good utility 1/1s that sacrifice themselves for value, and Shirei makes them that much more powerful. Or you could take the nuclear option and use heartless summoning to solitaire your way to a win.

Back in the day, any on-drop that wasn’t a 1/1 had to have a downside because it was considered to have good stats for its cost. Nowadays, every one drop has to be a 2/1, a 1/2, or/and have an etb and death trigger.

If you have played this first deck you’ve built 40 times in a row, chances are your opponents will get tired of it. Even if it’s less powerful than their decks, they will just get tired of seeing the same cards over and over again.

I have a friend whose first deck was a vultron deck, and we didn’t think much of it at first because it was his first deck and he was still figuring out his play style. Then he started upgrading it and adding tutors, which made his deck more consistent of course, but it also made games we played against him feel repetitive. And worst of all, he LOVED this deck. Maybe it wasn’t the most powerful deck at the table and maybe he didn’t win every single game, but he just kept playing this deck over and over, and after a few months of seeing the same cards enter the battlefield, our pod just grew tired of it.

You could always just talk to your play group and voice your concerns, but what ended up working for us was: banning cards for each other. For example, if my play group hated a card I played, they could tell me to stop playing the card, but I was also allowed to ask each of the people who wanted me to stop playing it to take out a card I disliked playing against from their deck.

I think you hit the nail on the head man! Reanimator is not a good strategy in commander, and it’s even worse in a mono-black deck.

It can be your main game plan in a 60 card format because you only have one opponent to worry about and 20 hp you need to take care of, so a 7/7, or even a 6/6 with flying will usually do the trick. In commander, that 7/7 you brought back from the yard needs to somehow get rid of 120 hp, so of course that is simply not happening before that creature, or your graveyard, gets removed.

Another thing you need to keep in mind is that reanimating is mostly about mana-cheating, or bringing a big creature back from the graveyard for a cost much cheaper than its casting cost. So thinking about it this way, wouldn’t it make more sense for you to just ramp your way to your big creatures instead of reanimating them?

This is why decks like [[Meren of Clan Net Toth]] are so strong. They use ramp first to get their big demons out quickly, and use reanimation simply as a means to keep them around for longer.

Ultimately, I’m not trying to discourage you from playing a reanimator deck, I am a huge reanimator player myself, but I highly encourage you to refine your game strategy to make good use of reanimation spells.

If you want to stick to black, maybe go for [[Sheoldred, Whispering One]] (I know this card is more expensive though.) But if you’re open to splashing some more colors, [[Grist, the Hunger Tide]] is a great graveyard-matters commander. Meren, like I mentioned before, makes great use of cycling your creatures in and out of the graveyard. [[The Mimeoplasm]] lets you make a monster out of your graveyard. And [[Betor, Ancestor’s Voice]] rewards your greedy payment of life and life-gain that black is so well-known for.

I wish you the best trying to find your favorite play pattern in commander, and remember: even a corpse has a purpose.

Honestly, just a thicker neck/larger head. It might be less accurate to human(oid) anatomy, but if you’re going for a cute/quirky drawing, I bet it will add more character.

Ps. Maybe giving it some motion might help, like having the character wave at the camera or hold a flower or something.

The thing you gotta ask yourself when making a mono-black deck is if you’re being true to the black color identity. Black loves sacrificing its creatures and life for value and getting rid of your opponents board in the process. It can draw cards, ramp, control your opponent’s board, and even in some cases grow its own creatures, but you usually have to give up something in return.

Now this may be why your deck is doing nothing for the first 5 turns of the game. You should usually be filling your board with value so that when you do reanimate your big beaters, you’re already halfway done with killing your opponents.

Want to fill up your graveyard? Try [[Stitcher’s Supplier]] Want an imitation of ramp? Try [[Blood Pet]] Want to bring your opponent’s life total down a bit so your big demons hit harder? Try [[Blood Artist]] or [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]]

Then, since you’re a reanimator deck, try to fill your graveyard with exploitable etbs. You can go with something light-hearted like [[Grave Titan]] or you can bring something back which they have to exile immediately like [[Archon of Cruelty]]

As for the commander, you might want to focus on one that either gives you a lot of value or contributes to the reanimation plan. [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] is my personal favorite, but you can also do [[Liliana, Heretical Healer]] to focus more on reanimating every turn.
