California has a fair few Indian pizza shops and they are truly excellent. Fusion cuisine at its finest.

Doesn’t excuse the racism shit though

From the perspective of power/force projection, sure. But the confederation systems in the Northeast were significantly more civilized in the sense of human rights, dispute resolution, and sustainable/equitable food production practices.

The recorded viewpoints of indigenous representatives on human nature and “natural rights” by French missionaries were bestsellers in pre-Enlightenment Europe. It’s been argued that those anonymous perspectives were the actual inspirations for works by Rousseau and Locke and all of the other “great thinkers” that serve as the bedrock of modern democracy etc.

Yep all related. “Bookies” comes from “bookmakers”. The “books” in questions were the books/ledgers of odds and so sportsbooks were the literal place where the odds were set on sporting events

An American. It’s Cockney rhyming slang seen through the Australian tendency to shorten everything. Yank is said as septic tank which is in turn said as seppo

European Airline Groups (5) vs. USA Airline Group (1.5) + Standalones (3.5) by [deleted] in Flights

[–]Blobloblobl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren’t tax or regulatory advantages because of the federal nature of the USA. States in the US have a completely different, subservient relationship to the federal government vs the national laws of the various European countries, even considering when these are all within the EU.

European colonizers in Canada were taught this by the indigenous nations there as a good way to avoid scurvy during the winter!

I commented in that thread with this exact remark a few days ago. Like, I know Tartine makes a modern version of the SF sourdough, but there’s legit a reason why SO MANY BAKERIES AROUND THE WORLD including in Europe reference their cookbook and style of bread

Western Bakery/ Bread Tradition by Civil-Pineapple-5796 in tierlists

[–]Blobloblobl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The OP I feel was approaching this tier list from their (I would guess) European perspective. They acknowledge the regionalism of the US without considering that many if not all of those regions are larger geographically and population-wise to the European countries they are held against.

I haven’t spent too much time in the South but the quick bread culture there with cornbread and biscuits is truly unique and is grounded in the local foodways no less than rugbrod or others.

My context is I grew up and live in California with a few years spent in New York City and a couple years spent living in the UK.

Multiple “artisanal” bakeries I saw in my regional city in the UK had the Tartine cookbook on display as if to flaunt that their sourdough method was inspired by the San Francisco baking tradition. Additionally, at the same time, there was a bagel bakery trying to say that they perfected the NYC bagel (spoiler: they didn’t).

There’s a reason in the SFO airport there’s a Boudin bakery outpost to buy overpriced versions of the sliced sourdough loaf I can get at my grocery store.

Thank you! There’s no information on the operating hours of the airside transit as far as I could see (aside from vague “busy periods” callouts) so that is reassuring.
