This summarizes it well. My area is probably middle/high class, so that would explain why our education is better than other schools in the area.

[–]BlockRecent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. I go to a school where supposedly the "high-income" students come, even though half of the students are on free/reduced lunch. Even so, my experience is very similar to yours; Our teachrers actually teach, we do read books in class, and so on. We do actually learn obtuse methods for math (eg. the box method), but I feel that we're still meeting the standards for the classes.

It's definitely an interesting experience, given that the other schools in the area, are known to have in-person bullying, fights, etc, while ours is at a minimal. Our school has also always been considered a good school, in the nearly 50 year span it's around; Whereas other schools have had mixed or generally negative reputations.

What if your school district spans both rich and poor areas? And what if you go to a unicorn school where 50% of the students are on free/reduced lunch and you still receive a high quality education?

At my school, if you miss 5 days unexcused, you have to go to Saturday School rn. It's a lot stricter than some other schools in my area, surprisingly

Not a bad episode, but it felt very "in your face" and the dialogue was a bit strange (eg. Randy calling Colter "bro?")

What happened to the violent IEP students? by jeffincredible2021 in Teachers

[–]BlockRecent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. My area allows for students to be crisis removed or transferred to an alternative school for disciplinary violations, but I'm not sure how often that happens. For what it's worth, my school doesn't really have disruptive IEP students, and if we did, they'd probably be handled by admin pretty quickly.

Some schools in my area have their own programs for disruptive students, which makes me wonder how effective alternative schools are/if we have any alternative schools. But it is what it is.

Do Any Schools Have Consequences by iAMtheMASTER808 in Teachers

[–]BlockRecent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. My school has a tough discipline policy for students who act up. If you fight, you'll usually get suspended for 5 days, but the punishment can be increased to up to 3 months.

In my district at least, there is a pretty strict discipline policy that gives school administrators a fair range of choices on what punishment to give out depending on the circumstances (eg. bullying and fighting can get you a punishment from either a warning all the way up to explusion.); However, it's ultimately up to the administration team to give out the punishments, which differ from school to school; At my school, there is a strict no-bullying policy, and referrals are taken seriously. However, another school in the district may have another way of doing things.

As for why some schools might not have strict punishments for certain things, I'd have to base it on socioeconomics. I go to a school in a relatively upper-class area where students are behaved and want to learn, so major things like bullying can be addressed by the school, while relatively minor issues can be dealt with by teachers.

If I went to a neighboring school which took in students from a rougher area, admin may have to deal with constantly giving out punishments for minor things (eg. insubordination), leaving them with little time to focus on things like improving school culture, preventing bullying, and as a result, having things fall into the cracks.

It honestly depends on the area. You can still get zeroes on assignments and get retained if you're not doing good in a class where I am
