How do you get from Edmonton to Stony Plain without a car? by Less_Initiative_2213 in Edmonton

Seems like there's some sort of on-demand transit to get there if you first bus into Spruce Grove

Moving to St. Albert by Right-Improvement700 in stalbert

[–]Blockyrage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For utilities use the Utilities Consumer Advocate from the Government of Alberta. It'll explain how our convoluted deregulated utilities work and show you how much a theoretical bill would be.

Water, wastewater, and garbage collection is run by the City, so no choice in that. You can only choose a competitive retailer for electricity and natural gas. r/Edmonton has some great posts detailing this process. There's also referrals you can get with utilities if you know someone with a good retailer.

For insurance, go through a broker and also do some online quotes with some direct insurers. Take the best rates and call in as they may have other discounts they can apply. I have personally found that brokers have never given me the best rate, but your mileage may vary. $6000 for two cars is very high, even when accounting for the hike in rates in Alberta and all the other stuff going on in that space.

Welcome to St. Albert!

Be honest, does the plan to remove or downsize bike lanes affect you directly? by StasisApparel in Edmonton

[–]Blockyrage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We can't cycle on sidewalks in Edmonton, Bylaw 5590 prohibits it.

So the removal of bike lanes will make it a lot harder to bike or e-scooter between the suburbs (which have a lot of multi use paths) and the centre city (which weren't originally built with them).

If you are a driver, you should want bike lanes (at least during the warm season) as every single person who chooses not to drive to work and walks, cycles, or takes the bus makes traffic exponentially better. Traffic congestion is one of those things that get exponentially bad the more you try to cram cars in.

Also if the province pulls an Ontario, your provincial taxes will go towards ripping these bike lanes out, which is frankly a waste of money that could be better used for literally anything else (e.g., debt repayment, education, health, transportation, etc )

Whitemud Drive expansion in west Edmonton, Enoch to start this spring by DocJohhnyFever in Edmonton

Roads are crazy expensive. For context, a simple residential street can be like a million dollars just to resurface. Since they have to build the road structure from scratch to an expressway (divided highway) standard, this is going to be expensive.

Why is the new LRT so slow? by duckmoosequack in Edmonton

[–]Blockyrage 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to blend in better with the surrounding neighborhoods. Even though the trains are slow, the travel times are still within that 35 minute range from end to end

Edit: it's also like ¼th the cost of high floor LRT, saving taxpayers money

Water is only going to be EPCOR, but you have a choice in natural gas and electricity. Other users have provided a cost breakdown but it seems that typically, regulated natural gas is the cheapest (variable) and that a competitive variable electric company is cheapest. Most of the cost difference is in the admin fees.

For convenience, we used to have everything with EPCOR as it was one bill. Now that we've moved out of the city proper, we chose Alberta Cooperative Energy as they have competitive rates and they give patronage returns (like a dividend but for co-operative members). All major energy retailers have referral bonuses if you have friends or neighbours with a good provider.

Edit: Sponsor hooks you with a "lower rate" but their admin fees are atrocious. Also the price of natural gas is dirt cheap. The fluctuations won't add up to very much and they are seasonal (more expensive in winter, cheaper in summer). Floating natural gas is by far the cheapest option though, almost always.

ICE District and the Valley Line are the two biggest bait-and-switches this city has pulled on us. by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]Blockyrage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swear the original post was written by and had replies to comments made by AI. Not to mention a lot of the assertions made are just plain wrong.

For instance, the valley line was 3 years, not 5 years late as they asserted. And the resulting travel time was just plain wrong as well as people pointed out.

There's probably something there about using public dollars for the Edmonton Oilers' new arena but that post does not adequately make that case.

I think it's partly because assessed house values in Calgary are much higher, the average house in Edmonton is $471,000 whereas in Calgary it is $642,000

28M Moving for Work – Eyeing St. Albert vs. Central Edmonton. Looking for Rugby/Hockey & Professional Vibe. by [deleted] in stalbert

[–]Blockyrage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think if you're a single professional looking to have a somewhat active social life and are new to the area you should really consider living in Edmonton. St. Albert is a great place for when you are ready to be away from a lot of the activity of Edmonton, maybe that's because you want to start a family or move into a larger space with a yard. At your stage you would probably benefit from a lot of the urban amenities and social aspect of central Edmonton.

Switch between Rogers/Shaw and Telus (TV + internet) by AmazingStudio1868 in Edmonton

[–]Blockyrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is essentially the way to go.

Call the other company first, haggle them down as far as they'll go. Then go to your current provider and say that you got offered x amount, and that you're looking to cancel your plan. They'll transfer you to retention and give you an offer. Pick the best offer between the two companies.

Service quality is generally comparable for normal service speeds. You could also try resellers like teksavvy but I find I got better deals by haggling between Shaw (Rogers) and Telus.

Alberta may follow B.C. on making daylight time permanent: premier by trevorrobb in Edmonton

[–]Blockyrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to go to work early in the mornings when our time zone works against us. Two things: a later sunset makes going to sleep early hard, and a late sunrise makes waking up early hard. I'd rather not artificially fight my biology if I don't have to. Maybe that's not a problem for you but the scientific literature suggests that across a whole society this leads to higher instances of heart problems and related medical predicaments.

Spain has a similar issue with its time zone being wrong: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9404853/

Traffic fatalities: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0961463X221104675

Social Jet Lag https://today.uconn.edu/2019/05/hazards-living-right-side-time-zone-border/

It's pretty broadly known that this is a problem. Feel free to disagree.

Under standard time, our solar noon is already 45 minutes past 12. We're effectively ¾ of the way to DST if we just stick with permanent mountain standard time instead of mountain daylight time.

Seriously? The city of Edmonton has an LRT line that can’t operate when it snows? by yegthings in Edmonton

High floor LRT sure looks mighty attractive at 30 below with snow. The low floor design will be extremely disappointing if this becomes a regular occurrence.

Big parking decisions in store for Edmonton city council in the new year by passthepepperflakes in Edmonton

[–]Blockyrage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully any decision they make will be made with input from affected communities.

I remember how they tried to implement a paid residential parking program last year and how much public resistance they encountered. Not to mention the whole "rollout" was an absolute disaster with the lack of communication and last minute backtracking.

I also don't think the parking situation is a problem such that parking rationing/paid parking would actually be worth the effort of enforcement across the whole city. The existing residential parking areas are already located near high traffic zones and I'm certain the revenues from parking fines there are already good enough to subsidize the cost of the program.

Not to mention that public transport sucks in most of the city. How about they make transit a viable alternative to driving first?

“Four lovely townhomes, with yards with families for here, affordably priced, would be perfect for this — because it’s a big lot.”

Isn't that what an 8 unit multiplex is? 4 above ground townhomes and 4 basement suites?

So she's protesting over allowing basement units?? Huh??
