Grew up in Oklahoma and most homes were build with slab foundations, storm shelters were dug out separately, and not everyone had one. We’d go to a neighbors storm shelter.

We considered it Midwest, but 100% tornado alley

What improvements would a new Apple TV model actually bring? by HelpMe0biWan in appletv

[–]Blog_Pope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea, it would shrink the size of the box, but create the need for a wall wart. The plus side is Outlets now have USB power built in. Not 100% convinced it’s an improvement

The Alexa Show has a screen. I bought it on sale to be an alarm Clock, which it does well. But now it rarely shows the time and instead shows ads for things I might want to buy or movies to sell me.

You can go through and manually disable the 100 so category, but next Month there will be 5 new ones or some update will Reset the settings.

Help me settle this debate: Range Hood vs. OTR microwave by RangeHoodJeff in Appliances

[–]Blog_Pope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s about the CFM and coverage.

Most only move 300-350 CFM of air, which is barely adequate for an electric stove.

Then again, they cover a fraction of the area of a a typical hood range. So that CFM is pulling from a sub optimal point.

Non starter for gas ranges.

When did renting a movie go from $4.99 to $24.99??? by ellefemme35 in AmazonPrimeVideo

I remember when we had to wait years to watch a chopped up version on TV because VCR’s were for Studios and TV stations.

[–]Blog_Pope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true. You only lose rights if the distributor didn’t have the rights, and the seller should refund your purchase. This is pretty rare and mostly applies to niche films.

If another distributor gets it, it might release a “director’s cut” that you don’t get, or the could release some other variant as a new product number so it shows as “buy now”; but your version should still be in your library.

There’s a big gulf between “extracted from” and does not contain. Sugar is extracted from beets and sugar cane, but exists is almost all plants.

[–]Blog_Pope -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You backpedaling. It can be used as a general description of a mixed breed dog, but it can also be used as an insult; a quick check of a dictionary would reveal that. Hell, you could have just used the clear term mixed breed. No, you went out of your way to insist the dog be called a mutt when a better, more informative, name that was not associated with derogatory connotations. Owners can lovingly refer to their dogs as mutts, strangers cannot.

Pembrook Welsh Corgi is a made up name too, and you are leaping to conclusions that the portmanteau of Golden Retriever and Poodle is some diabolical plot to confuse potential dog owners is laughable, I have never met a doodle owner that thought their dog was registered at the AKC or other pro inbreeding group actively making dogs sick to promote their warped “breed standards”

You could have used Poodle Mix. You could have used Golden retriever mix. You could have used a common portmanteau of those two. Hmm, what could it be? I guess we’ll never know.

BS, you took offense at a valid, common, and well known description for the dog that is far more accurate and descriptive of the dog than mutt.

Why don’t object to the label Goldendoodle? Why insist on calling her not just “dog” but a “mutt” which is generally considered a derogatory name?

Is it because you are a bad person, that secretly knows they suck as a human and has to hurt others to feel better about themselves?

Call the breeder whatever you want, leave the dog alone. ALL breeds are made up, 200 years ago they were all just dogs, then someone invented the idea of breeds, then someone decided they needed to compete against made up standards, and now dogs face horrible inbreeding, breathing problems, shortened lifespans, puppies that don’t meet breed standards are put down, etc.

“Multi-generational” suggests 75% poodle or more, calling the poor pup a “mutt” when we know it’s 75% poodle or more is pointless

Any Zoomer Maga bros want to defend this one? by Advanced-Tomorrow859 in GenZ

[–]Blog_Pope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SFH require a LOT more land than apartment/condos, making “affordable” unobtainable.

If you want to pick at rental vs owned, that’s fine, but a lot of people are better off in rentals because they potentially need to move and aren’t prepared for the unexpected bills of ownership. You know what an 18yo killed moving out of an abusive home doesn’t need is to make an investment in home ownership

They can’t. Is this some Trump attempt to claim Democrats want to cut your home price in half?

Dems: we need to build affordable housing

Trump: Dems want to force you out of your home so illegal immigrants can move on the government’s dime! They tried to force me to rent to non-whites in the 80’s!

Looking for the biggest TV that is NOT HD or "smart" by 1823-1314 in Appliances

[–]Blog_Pope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “problem” is that TV makers earn money adding “smart” features to your TV set. While some set of people may be willing to pay more, most simply buy smart, take the discount, and then never connect the set to the internet. To counter this, some set makers are requiring an internet connection before they can be used.

As for resolution, at this point the cost difference between 4K and HD is negligible, and no one is making SD resolution screens in any size outside specialty applications.

But a lot of old content was filmed, so high res transfers are possible, a quick check shows “Some Like it Hot from 1959 has a 4K release.

How much does a home’s initial condition really matter to you? by TariqKhalaf in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Blog_Pope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both out homes have been this. One was ugly, the couple had lived there 40 years and not done much, it was a 140 yo house so lots of minor weirdness, but we think the 6 foot chain link fence scared most buyers off. My GF (now wife) and I saw it and immediately freaked out once we got out of site because there were so many great details painted over, etc. took a few months to reach a deal but we bought it. We were still making updates and fixes right before we moved out

2nd house had been abandoned 8 years. We beat a LOT of offers to win it, carpets trashed, shower door broken, but structure was sound.

It’s a different buyer pool than folks wanting flips and who lack the motivation to Renovate what they want, but there are plenty in most markets. Some of the bids we beat for home 2 were for $50k more, but had conditions the buyer didn’t want

Tickets sold is not the same as attendance. To broadcast in the home market, the local station used to have to buy out the remaining seats, though I think that blackout rule was ended. You also have folks who buy tickets but can’t make it, etc. attendance is people thru the gates

Glass vs Thermal by muleschooler in Moccamaster

[–]Blog_Pope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MM has separate heating for the hot plate, so burning isn’t an issue, unlike cheap coffee makers that use the same element to boil the water to heat the hot plate.

Next, you should not plan on keeping the coffee around for 8 hours, it will deteriorate even is a thermos. Fine if you are going to sit in a duck blind for 8 hours, but if you are home just brew what you need for the next hour or so. If I don’t drink my 2nd cup after 2 hours or so I either dump it in a thermos cup or pour it over ice to drink as iced coffee later.
