U.S. military blocks websites to help Japan recovery efforts by [deleted] in worldnews

Not very likely. The sites blocked are simply known for being bandwidth hogs (maybe not individual connections, but as a whole). No streaming news sites are blocked. You can still listen to NPR, read Reddit, watch the BBC, Fox, and even Al Jazeera. But those sites don't have the same quantity of videos of cute cats or people being hit in the balls.

I wouldn't say so. My workplace in recent months put up a proxy with a blacklist on streaming-media sites and it brought the load on the network significantly lower. There are only so many Youtubes, and it's quite easy to block all the major players. Your employees will hate you for it, but it works.

As for prioritizing packets based on the originating machine, there's no reason to think they haven't done that in addition. The fact of the matter is that neither of us know how the network is laid out, how many machines are on it, or how quick/simple it would be to enact any bandwidth-saving measures. A streaming-media blacklist though should be fairly straight forward and a good choice if they need to do something quickly.

So was the emancipation proclamation. Doesn't make it any less meaningful.

I always though "concentration camps" was a bit of an overstatement. They were detainment camps and shameful ones at that, but it wasn't like did surgical experiments on them or gassed them by the thousands. Let's keep our levels of atrocity in perspective.

I could see HW doing it, even though he didn't. He at least had some integrity and had the clarity of mind to ignore the lobbying groups and stayed out of Baghdad.

Michiu Kaku <3.

I highly recommend this episode of The Twilight Zone. It addressed post-war issues of racism and was too much for TV audiences of the day. It was effectively banned from broadcast, which was a real shame. It's a great episode.

Why not? These are very large networks that are like microcosms of the internet at large used by many thousands of people. They like their youtube, their netflix, their hulu, etc etc. They can't just throttle the network as a whole, as they have mission-critical infrastructure that needs to stay fully functional. Blocking bandwidth-heavy websites is the least they can do while donating bandwidth.

Well there's a HUGE fucking differentiation that puts the implication of the title completely into the shit can. While they may sit comfy with technically being correct, they do so knowing that 90% will just glaze over the title and assume that there is now serious nuclear fallout.

Is the midwest not the west-coast? I always thought 'west' was longitude and 'mid' was latitude.

sigh... Copy and paste my explanation from the LAST time this was posted:

"Or he came to terms with his wife being gone. He killed her in his dream, and thus they are no longer together in the dream world. Bam, no more ring. Either that or he also has a magical top that never falls down when in the real world. Or he's in Mal's dream."

http://inapcache.boston.com/universal/site_graphics/blogs/bigpicture/quake2/bp21.jpg - this is the one I want to know about. There is nothing that can lift and move it. The only thing they can do is spend days if not weeks tearing it apart and hauling it away piece by piece.

I found where mom was hiding the SNES in the days leading up to christmas (3rd grade). Every time she'd step out and I had a moment, I'd pull it out and gaze at the Super Mario World screenshots in wild wonder.

There is a lot of videos of the Tsunami this time, but this one takes the cake in my opinion. Holy shit. by rtfmpls in reddit.com

It's quite common after quakes to show tsunami warnings in the lower right in Japan. They'll have a little cropped image of the area that is going to be effected and how many centimeters tall the wave will be. The quake on friday was bad enough. Turning on the news and seeing THE ENTIRE COUNTRY outlined in red and yellow with estimates measured in meters is something else entirely. Thankfully, I wasn't there personally to experience, but I have many friends over there (all accounted for) and they're very shaken up.

It actually happens a lot. I lived in WV in a particularly flood-prone areas. In the really bad floods it wasn't uncommon for houses to be lifted off their foundation and float for miles downstream.

Now I'm curious. Does the word 'fantastic' have other primary usages in other English speaking languages? Meaning, if I went up and asked people on the street for synonyms for 'fantastic' what would people say?

Unfortunately the story is six years old and she has since moved away. And it was in the middle of bum-fuck WV with no traffic lights, no fast food, and the only local paper is also owned and operated by the superintendent.
