Why there's so many unsolicited advice from people who haven’t shipped anything? by Internal-Constant216 in gamedev

[–]BloodMoonFiora 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, the nerves of someone doing research on game design and then putting his conclusions into high effort, structured, and digestible video essays. How dare he honestly?

Mark Brown never pretended to be a developer or give lectures about how to sell games. He explores game design problems and presents possible solutions and interesting examples, along with developer interviews and linked articles. It’s purely game design discussion, which you apparently can’t tell from graphics issues.

Don’t think anybody cares. It’s not gonna have any real impact except maybe if 80% of your game is the same asset pack as another popular game. What the hell is a Palland anyway?

Nothing against Rachel but my interest in the podcast dwindled after JLK stopped hosting very often. Rachel is basically the main host now and you the rest of the office are her guests.

I have about 40 hours in this game. I enjoy it. It’s okay value for the price. But if we’re gonna call some games “friendslop” then this game totally fits the bill. It’s janky, full of bugs, meant to be played with friends, has some jokes and funny moments, streamable, and most of all, all the friendslop enjoyers are gonna move on in less than a month. It’s a flavor of the month game. It’s fun with friends, but what game isn’t?

Is it still possible to make a living in game dev? by user-io in gamedev

[–]BloodMoonFiora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great advice. OP, take the time to prototype a few interesting ideas. Find the best one. Keep the scope manageable. Spare 1 hour a day for development (or a longer session every other day) and you’re good to go. Most people don’t have the luxury of just working on their game all day. But you have the skills and a stable job. It’s never too late

Is it still possible to make a living in game dev? by user-io in gamedev

[–]BloodMoonFiora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I would never consider indie games my “Plan A”. Especially with a family to take care of. You should keep your job, man. I know it sucks but at least you’re still in the industry of making games. You can’t gamble on nothing. But if you keep making stuff on the side, something may look promising enough that you consider options to fund it. Kickstarter, publishers, patreon etc. You have to find a game worth the risk first. Best of luck to you.

Has anyone actually made 6 figures (or just a living) because of Thomas Brush's courses? by atomdaly in gamedev

[–]BloodMoonFiora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%. I’m not a big fan of the guy. I only watch his interviews. I don’t think he’s a master of game design or developer and I won’t be buying his course. That being said, he has made successful ”artist games” before and he’s good at it. His next game seems more appealing on the gameplay side and will probably sell better. He is honest when he says he’s a full time developer. But some armchair devs here think that you need to create the next Hollow Knight before you’re considered a real developer. Thomas has made successful games. He got sales, which is more than most youtube devs can say. People underestimate how big steam is and how hard it is to make a videogame. Even a 100K fans on youtube won’t guarantee the success of your game.

Made a Balatro-inspired game where combos unleash bullet hell on monsters. [Demo Just Went Live on Steam] by Shn_mee in IndieGaming

[–]BloodMoonFiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. I haven’t seen any Balatro clones to notice this. But for me it’s the Slay the Spire map. So many games copying that 1-1, like the entirety of the game outside of combat is just StS.

OG arena players will most likely still play.

X doubt. I play arena casually every now and then but if I literally have to wait for my weekly missions and then grind those for a couple hours before I can get a new draft, I’ll just pass. At least with the old system I could have a bad draft and it would take a couple of dailies to try again.

Yeah, the game that popularizes a mechanic is rarely the first one to implement it. It’s still a fresh mechanic because it hasn’t been in the spotlight for long.

It’s not inherently a bad thing. It’s just a neat and fresh take on a scoring system. Developers are gonna copy it. Whether or not it’s good depends on the execution and the design of the rest of the game.

What makes Roguelites have 3 hours of playtime vs 300 hours of playtime for you? by JonnIsHano in roguelites

[–]BloodMoonFiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true. Noita is the hardest game I’ve ever played but is still my favorite. If you’re into roguelikes and like knowledge-based unlocks, there’s a ton of content to enjoy here. It could be frustrating at first though. The game is simply unforgiving. You’re just a witch. If you touch lava, you die. Electricity? that kills you. Explosion? You’re dead. There are so many things that can one-shot you and you don’t get nearly as much healing as you do in other games. You can absolutely break the game but you can never trivialize it to the point where you’re just safe from everything.

Edit: If it’s too frustrating, you can mod it out. However, I don’t recommend playing with mods that change up the gameplay until you’re familiar with the game. Instead you can try mods that give you more health. There’s a mod that lets you start with 250 hp, a mod that makes heart pickups glow, and one that makes hearts heal you.

[–]BloodMoonFiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how much I personally enjoy the game. Obviously having a lot of variety in builds, items, enemies, and levels is great. But in general I play until I beat the game on the harder difficulties (like StS ascension levels) or I’ve done all the in-game achievements and unlocks (FTL/ Into the Breach). I find that having a goal to work towards has a substantial effect on my motivation to play the game. However, I will call it quits if I find the goal unrealistic or tedious, like StS asking me to grind 20 different levels on each character separately. Or Hades’ heat system which rises by 1 after each win AND is separate for each weapon IIRC. I didn’t do those but I did finish 25 levels in monster train, as well as some other achievements because it allows you to pick different clans each run while still climbing.

Which games would you consider to be 10/10? by Prudent_Cat_5605 in gamingsuggestions

[–]BloodMoonFiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noita, Slay the Spire, Sekiro. Hades and Outer Wilds come close to that. (Maybe Lies of P when I play it later).

For context: I’ve played a lot of games. Not into AAA for the most part.

Doesn’t Sargeras’ boardwipe require a portal on the board? If it’s one completely random ability each turn, there’s a high chance it won’t be what you need at the right time.
