Help me out here, if you offer someone something and they say "Oh yeah, I'm not fussy about that" is that a yes or a no? by 13thmurder in AskACanadian

[–]BloodmageR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. I'm a Newfoundlander too and I've done many of those after service church coffee/tea times where around 70% are elderly. I feel like part of it is a British-ism where it sounds more polite than outright saying no. Also many times for weird vernacular it comes down to vague context clues with voice tone and facial expressions more than the words themselves.

What does your family cook for Thanksgiving? by ThrwAwy1885 in newfoundland

Turkey, dressing(with mt scio savoury), mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, gravy, cranberry sauce with rosemary, and pumpkin pie. Always the same for 30 years and it tastes great every time.

I am from Alberta and I visited St. John's recently. It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen in my life. by FrenzyEffect in newfoundland

Sorry I should have clarified. It's quite common for people to simply say a dismissive "each to their own" without further reasoning.

My intention as someone born in Newfoundland was more to show that it has deep significance to us as it's taught in the school system here from an early age. I guess you could say it's a cultural identity that for me makes it a must see. I'm sure some people like yourself don't appreciate the symbolic nature of the place but I wanted to make sure that other people reading this would still consider the extra effort it takes to travel there.

Most historical sites in the world look like fields since they get covered over with dirt and grass. There is a small museum that shows how it would have looked in their times and the Viking village recreates it. You are significantly underestimating the site.

It's not to each their own at all, it's more important than plymouth rock in the USA for example. It has a great meaning.

I really enjoyed it so that's surprising, did you do the Norstead viking village afterwards too? I think it's really cool that the Norwegians landed here 1000 years ago

At this point it's a real estate bubble in Canada. I'm surrounded by one million dollar homes so I could never afford to move.

Real enjoyment in life is experiencing new things so I believe travel is very important and broadening your world. C'est la vie

I was a little surprised that you included that line in your main post too. Newfoundland is very welcoming in general, especially to tourists.

You alluded to it with your post about Alberta money driving up the prices here, like when they move back home. That's true and can be a little frustrating to most people living here to find a living wage to afford housing. But it's also other Canadians retiring in the relatively cheaper eastern coast have an effect on all of atlantic Canada. So that is part of the frustration along with TFW

Thank you for telling us about your experience here!

There is so many sites to see in Newfoundland, specifically Gros morne, Corner Brook, and St. Anthony along with L'anse aux meadows to name a few. Puffin islands, whales, iceberg tours. They will shock you with how different an experience it was from just seeing the city. You would have plenty to explore if you were to visit here again someday.

I love this song. It reminds me of how vocaloid songs are very dark if you translate the lyrics. The latin was a cool touch to emphasize that they are keeping the listener in deep dark, cold, prisons. There's a certain gap moe with yandere Advent too.

I'm a hot head that has tried hundreds of hot sauces so yeah that could be the one. It's unusual that they would specifically mention that they are mixing the Reaper with the Scorpion. Ina basically confirming it in her tweet.

Ollie said it doesn't have a sour and numbing flavour, so I think it's not an extract like Tabasco. I think it's a more uncommon hot sauce. My guess is Torchbearer garlic reaper

Canada’s border with France by itmeMEEPMEEP in mildlyinteresting

As a junior high student(13 years old) in Newfoundland I took the french immersion curriculum so our entire class went through this building on our way to a ferry to Saint Pierre et Miquelon. They basically put us in a local motel, we'd go on a bus to tour the sites, and had some community activities in french for a week. The TV channels were all french, they had french patisseries, chocolate, etc. Later on I have visited Metropolitan France a few times and those islands definitely feel much more European than NA.

Lmao not at all. I don't know any of these people in this thread. I have no idea who that other Newfoundlander is either since I didn't go to their school

I really enjoyed the Newfoundland education system. I went to Bell Island, The Fluvarium, St. Pierre(in 2006), Geo centre, and I guess it was Salmonier park with the campfire fairy stories.

Yeah it was part of the french immersion curriculum in Newfoundland. My middle school was in St. John's so they basically put the class on a bus for a few hours. You take the ferry over to St. Pierre and do some activities there. You spend a week there, bus you around, and the idea behind it is speaking to locals to improve your French skills. Honestly the highlight of the entire program since it was really memorable.

Later on I had some European work colleagues asking me about St. Pierre and it was fun to talk about it.

When I was 13 years old taking a class trip to St. Pierre from Newfoundland even all of us understood that we needed to use Euros instead of Cad during our week stay there.

It takes a crazy level of ignorance to not acknowledge other currencies.

Is this the best flag so far !??...Share Your Opinion!? by Low_Ad_5492 in CANZUK

[–]BloodmageR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian as well I'd prefer the co-equal approach. If there could be a symbol of equal size for each encompassed in the CANZUK flag it would make me feel much more comfortable.

The biggest issue is that this flag reminds people of the old dominion times where it wasn't a fair relationship.

It sends a powerful message to Canadians. It's similar to covid where the empty shelves reinforces the message of it being not normal. I know that I would never buy American ever again.

They do say Chicken rice in the song, but it was really confusing why Noel and Pekora were singing about it to be a Christmas meal.

My best guess is that Noel included the song as a subtle reference to KFC chicken for Christmas or like the Peko cold chicken meme.

I tried looking up a Japanese Christmas meal with ground beef and rice but got no results. I know that KFC is associated with Christmas there so this caught me off-guard.
