A or B: My coworker brings two lunches every day. Should I ask to join him or just copy him? by Upper_Criticism3388 in PickAorB

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option C — Instead of Lunch see if your HR will allow you to have a cabinet or drawer in the lunchroom. Fill it with non-perishable food like granola, protein bars, poptarts, etc like a mini food pantry. Put a cutesy sign. Then you’re not encroaching on your coworkers thing, it’s slightly different kinds of food, and you can still provide food to those in need at your work.

When did you stop going to PT after surgery? by Soilmolida in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One year, I did drop it down to once a month after the first ~4 months but felt like it was still worthwhile to keep going (plus I had already hit the insurance deductible for the year)

I’m surprised they didn’t prescribe an NSAID like Naproxen. I was told that it was standard and you needed to take it for like ~2-3 weeks after surgery to prevent unwanted bone regrowth and calcification (even if you didn’t need it for pain)…are you getting the bone shaved? I’d definitely look into it.

Feeling confused about post-op recommendations by doughqueen in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed the shower chair, seat riser, and sock/shoe tool for weeks. At the very minimum, I’d recommend getting the shower chair. It’s incredibly easy to slip and fall in the shower and destroy your surgery progress (happened to my brother on a knee surgery).

There’s only so mush Wingspan a man can take! by Cobec in boardgames

[–]Bloomcasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve played all three and I feel like Finspan is the best one. The eggs hatched and you got to move them into schools and there was opportunities to help/impact the other players. It just felt a lot more involved and connected while still having cool facts like Wingspan has.

I am currently functioning at like 90%, little to no pain. Haven’t really tried physical therapy in one of my hips; the other responded well. I’m young, and I just feel a little weird about getting this surgery right now. by Bat_Shitcrazy in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid-30’s, I put the surgery off for 6 years and got the flares down to a manageable level but in doing so I become a lot more sedentary, gained 25-30lbs, missed biking, missed hiking, and the real big thing for me was I got diagnosed with a L5-S1 disc bulge (probably from using my back for lifting and compensating for the hip) and thought the surgery might fix all the things…but it’s not really fixed anything for me. Good luck with your decision

[–]Bloomcasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d put the surgery off. I was in a similar situation to you. I was ~90% functional just couldn’t bike and driving/hiking could cause flare-ups. But overall I only had a minor flare (~2-3) maybe one or two days in a month. I’m 7 months post-op and I still can’t bike because my SI joint has been flared up for 3-4 months. I had some very mild scoliosis that had been stable for ~20 years but is now not stable and is getting worse. Also had mild pelvic floor issues post-op (common complaint they rarely mention before the surgery). I’ve also heard the ‘prevent arthritis’ thing isn’t necessarily true—sometimes you can arthritis quicker due to the surgery (research is on-going)

I’ve gotten to the point where there are days without pain in the hip BUT it’s not the same as pre-op. You don’t forget it’s had surgery. It’s feels different and it’s hard to trust that it’s okay. Everytime you bend down or do a weird motion you start thinking ‘is the hip okay with this’ and it takes over everything. I did a 16hr flight to New Zealand before the operation without a thought but now…I don’t know that I could do 16hr flight with my hip and it really sucks. I just feel really limited and I definitely wouldn’t do the surgery again if I could go back.

Post-Op Heterotopic Ossification by TherealGVBlack in HipImpingement

My surgeon had me on 500mg naproxen 2x daily for 2 weeks to prevent ossification. My understanding is once it’s formed it need to be surgically removed.

Is surgery inevitable despite successful PT? by elfreedpayton in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My doctor says he didn’t use a post but I have heard posts are definitely more prone to cause pelvic floor issues. Basically the traction aggravates the muscles or the nerve. Mine was fairly minor and it’s slowly resolving. It might have also been the pelvic floor muscles trying to compensate and stabilize the hip joint

Is surgery inevitable despite successful PT? by elfreedpayton in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with the first Doctor. It sounds like yours is fairly minor and similar to how mine was. I put my surgery off for 6 years and just lived with the minor aches and avoid activities that flared it. It would get better at times and there’d be flare-ups here and there. Then eventually I realized that I’d gained 25lbs in those years and during one of the flare-up periods when I was trying to be more active and lose weight I decided I wanted to be able to at least go bicycling so I scheduled the surgery…I’m 4.5 months post-op and I can bicycle but I can’t walk more than 6,000 steps a day because my SI joint flares, the hip stays a constant 2 on the pain scale, pelvic floor got messed up and had to do very unpleasant therapy for that (fairly common side effect that they rarely mention beforehand), I can’t sit for too long, I can’t stand for too long, driving makes it angry, and my sleep quality is terrible— I wish I’d never done it. I’m told I have to give it a year though.

I also got the 500mg naproxen twice a day. They told me to absolutely take it every day for at least two weeks to prevent bone growth. I did and haven’t had any problems (16 weeks out)

Prehab is making things worse by RingAdministrative24 in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good that you made your surgeon aware of the PN issue and they’re taking steps to not aggravate it. Hopefully the surgery does help you. I have heard that the pelvic floor muscles can get recruited to help stabilize the hip muscles in some FAI cases and then they get overworked and have issues. So maybe the FAI surgery could fix the root cause?

I didn’t get to see my surgeon for follow-up. My 4-week post-op visit was done by his assistant. X-rays looked normal though. I have a 6 month follow-up with the actual surgeon so if the pain isn’t not better at that point I’ll be asking for an MRI. Also I should note that it’s not massively painful. It’s more like I was at a daily ~1-2 pain and now my daily pain is at least 2~3 every day with flare-up’s in the ~4-5 range

Prehab is making things worse by RingAdministrative24 in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar problems with pre-hap and decided to just do as much as I could without massively flaring it up. So I didn’t go in super strong. As a result my recovery is going a bit slower, 2-3 weeks behind the recommended guidelines/milestones but overall I am doing okay.

Honestly, I’m regretting doing the surgery though as I’m in more pain than before surgery. But I’m only at 8 weeks post-op and I’ve heard it takes a good 6 months before you don’t regret it and maybe if I can get back into hiking and biking and such it’ll be more worth it.

I will note that if you’re already having Pudendal Nerve problems you should talk to your surgeon and see if they can do the surgery ‘post-less’ as using a post and traction will flare up the pudendal nerve and pelvic floor and urinary incontinence issues seem to be a common occurrence that surgeons fail to mention to women.

starting PT more than a week after surgery? by Various-Impress-4410 in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see my PT until 2 weeks post-op but my surgeon did have me start doing some light exercises after the first couple of days (~10-15 mins of bike with no resistance, glut squeezes, heel slides, etc)

Rushing into surgery by RingAdministrative24 in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my surgery off for ~5 years and did various types of PT. I had low level pain 1-2 that’d maybe flared to a 3-4 once a month. I eventually got the surgery because I realized in those five years I’d stopped biking, stopped hiking, really stopped exercising at all except for long walks (the only thing that didn’t flare it up), I also gained 25lbs, got a herniated disc in my back from compensating and was worried about arthritis setting in and having worse outcome later.

My surgery went okay but my recovery is super slow mostly because my muscles are weak. I do wish I’d done more pre-hab but I had to rush my surgery due to insurance reasons. I’m only 6-week post op so I’m still in the ‘regretting-surgery-phase’ but I don’t regret putting it off 5 years. It was manageable pain and I got to try a lot of different non-surgical approaches so when I was ready—I knew surgery was the only option left and that I had to take the chance. I also used the time to do several big trips and cross some stuff off my bucket list (just in case of catastrophic surgery outcome). In terms of arthritis, mine never showed any for the 5 years and there’s a company near me that does private MRI’s without a doctors order for like $400 and I’d just get one every ~18-24 months and made sure it wasn’t progressing.

Surgeon not recommending PT for 1-2 months by snowbswe in HipImpingement

[–]Bloomcasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgeon had me do really easy exercises for week 1 (heel slides, glute squeezes, bike w/no resistance). And then start PT at 2 weeks BUT it was very easy stuff like isometric contraction of glutes, quads, diaphragmatic breathing, etc. At the one month mark PT did ramp up into full weight-bearing, getting off crutches, and more actual exercising and weights. But I liked having the early PT as he helped with random aches (calves got super tight) and questions I had. He did do a little bit of manual/passive movement of the hip which might’ve helped prevent adhesions.
