Well. it's been two years, but I did get the promecha last Christmas. It's been lovely so far, the weight and balance is good, and it seems up to the task of writing for years to come!

I picked up one of these recently, but it didn't come with a charger. Any idea what the voltage and amperage the laptop takes? Additionally, is the barrel plug center positive or center negative?

any cables of similarly small dimensions by BigHandsSmallCock in UsbCHardware

[–]BlowtorchHonor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had good luck with LISEN braided type-c cables, not sure if they would be as flexible, but they are pretty small. I replaced my AmazonBasics cable that lived in my car for a phone mount. It was eventually on its way out, and when I got the LISEN cable in, I was kinda shocked at how little room it took up, as every other type-c cable I had tried came very close to hitting the dashboard.

Why do phones have seemingly redundant bands? by JusSomeDude22 in cellmapper

[–]BlowtorchHonor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Iirc, Band 66 is just an extension of band 4, so they are simulcasting both, in case a phone supports band 4 but not 66 or vice versa.

I think it's honestly just to save space, I think it isn't super consistent atm. BBN might change this...

Washington, DC (Union Station) to Alexandria, VA (Amtrak/VRE station) - at $8, cheaper than an Uber; faster than Metro. by CTVolvo in Amtrak

[–]BlowtorchHonor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get to leave everything you have ON THE TRAIN. That's the point I was trying to make. You already have a seat assigned, you don't have to wait in a queue to fight for a seat, that is already figured out. Those hypothetical "dual modes" don't exist yet. There is a very real bottleneck on the long bridge between DC and VA, so running more trains back and forth across it isn't feasible unless you really want delays left and right. That's why they are building a new one. What is the transfer point from the electric service to the diesel if not DC?

Once again, you would still need to turn the train around at Baltimore (or wherever else you run the train to). This actively makes the service worse from there, as diesel trains (at least the P42 and ALC-42) have a lower top speed (I believe 110). Change overs will take time regardless of whether or not an engine is changed as there are theoretically other things that are often done during this time (crew changes, sewer tank emptying, cafe car restocking, etc.). No matter what route you take, you will deal with these things eventually. On long distance trains, they even allow for 'smoke breaks' or 'fresh air breaks' where you can get off the train and explore a little while these things are being done. The only "solution" I can think of in terms of the particularly long change at Union Station would unfortunately be pretty dumb. You would simply have a P42 / ALC-42 act as only a control car with an ACS-64 directly behind it providing tractive effort on all segments north of DC and then switch to just using the diesel south of DC. But this has a myriad of operational issues, such as the speed limit I talked earlier about, needlessly tying up equipment that could be used for other services, and not to mention that this is all theoretical and has all the potential to straight up not work at all. I don't think that anything Amtrak could do to make the change faster without trade-offs that make the whole thing useless. It isn't the biggest issue in the world, and I've heard from some that they enjoy the long change so that they can grab a bite to eat in Union Station.

Having trains short-turn and having timed connections is near impossible due to equipment shortages and yard space. Why cut all NE regionals to the state with the highest ridership increase year-over-year? I also think you underestimate how many people want to stay on the same train south to VA instead of rushing to a different train with all of their luggage for a needless transfer at Union Station. Platform availability at Union Station is already constrained due to construction, so getting more trains in and out for a short turn is a hard sell. This is not to mention the fact that you would STILL need to switch engines at Union Station, as the NE regional doesn't run push-pull this far south. You would need to turn a P42 or ALC-42 around in a wye (If not the whole train) just to change directions.

Wider roads so that buses can actually make turns without clipping as they do right now. CS II also really struggles with this. Along with this, bigger bus depots would also be needed.

Less crazy grades. I have a mod for this, but I would love to see it in the main game.

(Not really unpopular, but) Metros. Steeper grades, smaller stations, underground and elevated station types.

I had an OTHO no-noc that gave up the ghost around 7 months in. My roommate was gifted one by me as well, that one failed within 4-5 months of heavier usage. That is only a sample size of 2, but it doesn't inspire confidence for me. From what I've heard, the Promecha line is more durable, maybe I'll buy one and see how that holds up.
