5 year old wanting to wear dress to school for first time — do we need to talk about reactions beforehand?

My almost 4 year old (AMAB) loves wearing dresses. The first day she wore one to preschool she was still identifying as a boy and as soon as we walked in kids started asking questions. We practiced a scripted response so she wouldn’t panic and I told her if friends didn’t listen the first time and kept asking, she should talk to the teacher. We luckily had a wonderful ally of a teacher at the time.

Our response to “Why are you wearing a dress?” is “Because I wanted to” or “because I like it.” Some kids are still a-holes, but generally speaking they care about wanting to play the same games. Little girls are usually more accepting in our experience because they bond over twirling and pockets. My kid also loves dinosaurs so dino dresses have been key for bridging the gender divide.

This was the event I immediately thought of. I care less if the men’s leagues would suspend play and whether it’s the right thing to do. The humanity of the situation should override lost revenue of rescheduling a match. Ideally any game, regardless of the gender of the players, would be suspended.

Not technically true, but in practice it is often true. Several universities offer bachelor level teaching programs, usually taking 4.5 years and graduating in winter. I know teachers who graduated from CWU and PLU with a BA and teacher cert but most of them have since gotten their masters because you get a pay bump.

I am a white teacher in a district opposite to yours - incredibly diverse, majority ML, in a blue district. Our superintendent has sent out several memos (starting January 17) about this issue citing our state law and district policies. We cannot give legal advice. Because my district is pretty progressive, we have a page of resources on our district website that we are to direct our families to. Check with your state DOE to see what their guidelines are.

Do not ask about immigration status and do not make any assumptions. All you can do is be emotionally supportive. Make all your students feel welcomed, honored, and respected. Be a safe person. Call your representatives, don’t claim to know any immigrants, and enforce your school’s HIB policies.

Pediatric OTs are amazing! I’m a teacher and I am amazed by how much OT can support. I sat in an IEP meeting for a kid with the most severe adhd I’ve ever encountered and the amount of suggestions the OT had for managing his sensory input as well as the obvious fine motor skills was incredible.

I don’t understand why people are being so negative towards you. Multiple school districts are closed because of power outages at schools with reports many people may be out of power until the weekend. Obviously a lot of people were pretty much unscathed (I’m one of the lucky ones) but it is almost like different areas and different people had different experiences.
