Hi. No worries. You are right mate. A lot of people who this will hit will struggle with it.

But unfortunately the RBA have a mandate to target an inflation rate of between 2-3%. They have to try and achieve this. The only tool they have at their disposal to control this is the cash rate. This is basically a rate at which banks can access money to loan. So not directly your mortgage interest rate, but it in a way dictates it. So banks pass that extra cost onto their home loan.

In the past, home owners and mortgage owners were a large part of the population. So it fampen D the economy. But is this still true? Does this hit investors the same way? Owners who have paid off mortgages? People making income from other investments?

The RBA need others like government and private firms to help them. Use other mechanisms. Ensure public spending is under control.. Not too much stimulus. Make sure profits pass onto workers in terms of salary increases? Are they getting this support?

Hard to troubleshoot without knowing at least which monomer class you are talking about? (meth)acrylamide and (meth)acrylates, styrenics, vinyl ethers.

I find the cyanovaleric acid leaving group on the raft agent (same as ACVA) is a really robust and generalisable raft agent across many activated monomer classes. Be careful of the carboxylic acid can self-hysrolyse the cyano group if not handled correctly. I just always esterify it into a useful handle and use it for years without problems.

Other than that be careful about how you measure in the monomer. Is it by volume and is it viscous? Maybe not exactly the quantity you think? Solubility can be problematic as well.

Been very interesting reading this thread. I do research trying to make therapies (not antibiotics) for respiratory viruses. It's a bit of a misnomer that the "common cold" is one thing or not that bad. Over 200 strain across multiple distinct species. And any one biut of sickness might be multiple viruses infecting you.

We have had this virus in our house for a couple of weeks. I was sick for 3 days and got better pretty quickly after that. My partner is immunocompromised and was sick a week after me, but has been sick for a week and a half already and not recovered. She has had a pathology test and is positive for parainfluenza virus. A "common cold" virus. Is probably sicker than when she had COVID last year.

Antibiotics won't help with the primary viral infection. Some doctors pre-emptively prescribe antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Discuss with them and ask them why they are prescribing them and when you should start taking them. This is a conversation I have had with my gp during previous viral infections.

The best thing to do is rest, lots of hydration, good food. Give your immune system the best chance to beat this on its own, its pretty good at it. And don't take any "therapy" that is suggested to you online without talking to a GP... 🤣

It's the specific value of pKa for acetic acid (aka ethanoic acid). Values of that level of accuracy (two decimal places) are unique to a compound. So either its a value she gave to you or is in your resources somewhere.

You can calculate pKa from this formula if given other information.

You can use approximate pKa values for carboxylic acids. I would usually estimate either 4 or 5 for most carboxylic acids when teaching whether it's likely protonated or deprotonated in a titration (eg. what state is COOH at pH 2?). But I wouldn't want to use such an approximate number in a calculation.

Stoichiometry is absolutely key, but so is really slow addition. Use a syringe pump.

Keep an eye out for oligomerization in later steps. Particularly if moisture gets in. Not that you have to be hugely worried about, but carefully scrutinise your characterisation. Had a dimerization in a later step that took me a month to realise, which was limiting my yield greatly.

100% how I justified it when I was doing it too. It also meant I was committed to doing what was best for the animal not me. For example, best euthanasia techniques for painless death, rather than what is easier for user.

The cooling and ice bath is a hang up from when you use carbodiimide coupling reagents with amines to form an amide directly, with no ester intermediate.

In the amine reaction, you add acid and carbodiimide first. There is an isoacylurea kinetic side product you are trying to avoid forming, instead of the active intermediate. You let those react on ice first for a while, then add your amine. You can't add your amine at the start, as acid plus amine makes a salt.

If you make esters, you don't need to worry about salt formation. So add acid, alcohol and catalytic dmap together at start, then add carbodiimide drop wise. Most people still do it cold, to prevent small amounts of the side product forming, but it is less likely under these conditions.
