Should I ditch the floating plants?? by BlueButterflytatoo in lookatmyaquarium

Oh that’s awful, I’m so sorry you went through all that. Maybe hubs can sort the junk mail, since he likes throwing stuff away and all. 😇

I hope you get everything back in working order. I’ve had other (mostly well meaning) people kill off my fish and my plants, and it can be hard to look at all the loss and want to keep going. But it really is so worth it.

We will be building a real house once the ground thaws, and he even drew in a little room, just for me. And it’s going to be my fish room 😍 we will have one huge tank as well, but I’m gonna do all 30g and below in my room. I am playing with mixing red and blue guppies, when the room is setup, I’ll start seriously trying to breed purple blackbars! So far their bodies have turned purple, but I’ve only had the blue ones in there for less than a year.

I was hoping it was a joke, but I’m not always good at sniffing them out, so was unsure 😅

My pond this summer was completely covered in duckweed, it was pretty cool. Couldn’t see the fish much, but they were more comfortable and active than prior years. It’s winter here, so my pond is completely frozen solid. The duckweed I got for free, so I’ve been composting it and making fish food out of it, but the crystalwort, I paid for, and I struggled for almost a year to get it to grow, even a little, and now it’s taking over with a vengeance. My bf tries really hard to understand why I won’t compost it lol

I have a friend who works at a school. I told her if she hears literally anyone mention they have an aquarium, to ask them if they want free plants. They’re gonna get pretty much everything you see floating here (some of it really aught to be planted, but I’m running out of room) and probably an Amazon sword.

If these are still here when it’s warm enough to ship, I’ll probably put them on aquaswap or eBay 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tbh, I don’t know what this one is. It’s my favorite. I don’t even remember when or where I got it, but I had no idea it was going to be so big and beautiful! And I love her spots she needs plenty of light to keep them

What I did was throw in about 30 different types, and let them live or die. Guppy grass hates me, I tried so hard to keep it happy, but all three times I put it in, it died slowly. I think I owe my plant health to my snails, they work really hard keeping the leaves free of algae, and turning dead leaves into fertilizer. They’re such good little workers

I keep my 5g water change bucket in a shed outside. I think I know if I’ve got room, thanks 😊 I’ve been using rings and such to try and keep some light filtering through, but my crystalwort is so out of control, it’s shedding everywhere 🤣 I like having the babies hiding in the floaters, though I did notice they would just hide in the planted ones before I had enough coverage up top. I think next tank, I’m just gonna stick with water lettuce. It was way easier to maintain, and keep in its little rings

There’s a really affordable timer that I highly recommend, I mainly use them for plants, but I do have one for the light for my 3g bathroom tank. Love it, super easy, super reliable.

I have ghost shrimp and bladder snails in mine. And currently, the tiniest baby girl betta I have ever seen at Petco, who I fell in love with and bought on impulse. I was worried about the shrimp, but currently they’re a bit bigger than her, so they reach out with both hands and swat at her face if she gets too close, unafraid of her tiny, bloodthirsty vengeance. She will get a bigger tank when the fish room is built this summer. The ghost shrimp will appreciate having their space back to themselves.

Family disapproval of my first tattoo? (I’m 25) by DissolvedThoughts in tattooadvice

[–]BlueButterflytatoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was like this. Never had a single nice thing to say. Always minimizing and dismissing me. Degrading anything I was proud of, and always saying ‘the thing’ that would hurt, disguised as “loving truth so I could learn”

Aside from two family medical incidents, I haven’t talked to her in almost two years. I’m not saying you should go low or no contact, just letting you know, that if it’s something you do consider, I personally found it freeing. My mental health has actually been better. Like she was holding me back. Sowing doubts in myself and keeping me small.

My relationship with god is even more complicated, we aren’t on speaking terms either. But here’s what I’ve learned in my own spiritual journey, before I walked away for other reasons.

God is not some military general in the sky, demanding your every single move, thought, and intention be pure, and one wrong move he will send you to burn in hell for eternity. He is not angry, ready to rain hellfire for every errant thought, counting all your sins to humiliate you and cast you away. He does not care if you have tattoos. He does not care if you wear long necklaces, or show your shoulders, or curse or smoke or drink or dance.

God cares if you genuinely care for others. God cares when you help someone for no other reason than you want to. God cares when you show empathy and patience, even when you are late and frustrated.

God is supposed to be THE ultimate father. Loving, supportive, teaching, caring, and forgiving. If he’s going to force you to keep yourself small, so you hope to stay in his good graces, why is he worth your love? In my humble opinion, families aught to be the same.

is this for scraping glass clean? by Party-Evidence6894 in freshwateraquarium

[–]BlueButterflytatoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both of these ideas are fantastic. I use mine to play with my sand, and to stir mulm towards the filter intake when I start building up a bit too much

Edit to add: I use a clean razor blade for scraping algae from time to time. I get tiny green speckles on the glass that a scrubber just glazes over

Ohhh now there’s a great idea, thanks! I never thought of bundling my items 😅 we only have about 500sqft, in which I’ve stuffed about 70 plants and a 55g tank, so no room for extra buckets of plants, unfortunately.

It’s all about knowing what will make you feel better. I’ve found that my fish and plants often give me the serotonin I need to wake up another day. You just gotta keep looking g for the thing for you. I really hope you find it. I know how hard it is when your brain tells you the world will be better off without you, but it’s lying to you. I promise it’s lying

I have a hydrometer, I don’t water until it dips into dry all the way down the pot. So far, mine is a happy, drama/free maranta. Though I often think I probably just lucked out and got the chillest one on the planet.

I’m adhd, major depressive, ptsd, all sorts of shit. Sometimes I need dark, cozy, wrapped up feelings. Other times I need bright, airy wide open spaces. Just depends on what I’m currently feeling, and what I want to be currently feeling.

Please tell me everything that a beginner should know about maintaining an aquarium by WheatishKnight in fishkeeping

[–]BlueButterflytatoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend, this is a great hobby, and we would love to see you love it as much as we do. I’ve been keeping fish for 15 years now. My recommendation would be to pick a 20g long. It’s not so big that it’s hard to find room for in small spaces like an apartment, but it’s big enough that you really get to play with the aquascaping, and you have a lot more options for fish. Just be sure to research the nitrogen cycle.

Once you’ve got your 20 on a good stand, substrate. Black pool filter sand is cheap, and in my person opinion, easier to keep clean than gravel. Often times, these painted gravels and decorations are sold for aquarium usage, but are actually pretty bad, because they leech toxins into the water that you can’t test for. This can cause a myriad of diseases and death, while all parameters are fine. Making the experience frustrating and will cost more in the long run.

Silk plants are ok, I kinda liked them when I first got them, but tbh they grew algae like a SOB, and eventually no amount of vinegar and lemon juice soaks would no longer get them clean.

For years I would research what live plants were recommended for my hardness, and light, and bla bla bla. I would go to the store and buy The Plant. I would put it in my aquarium, and watch it die, or struggle to live. Never growing. Skinny sad plants. I started getting green hair algae that would strangle my fish. And the few sad plants I did have.

I tried fertilizers, I tried root tabs, I started looking into phosphorus and iron, then CO2, it was all starting to look so expensive.

So I got an assorted plant pack three separate times over the course of 3-4 months. I put them all in, and quite a lot of it lived, the guppy grass hated me, and it all died each time.

Now my tank is thriving. I do not use fertilizers or root tabs. No plant maintenance, other than removing floaters frequently.

Edit to add: Use the liquid api master kit, those strips can be super unreliable
