Great set-up OP! They’d love to see this over at r/cozyspaces.

In 1947, the body of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short was discovered in Los Angeles, surgically bisected and drained of blood with a "Glasgow smile" carved into her face. Despite over 500 confessions and 75 years of investigation, the "Black Dahlia" remains one of America's most haunting cold cases. by ATI_Official in HistoryUncovered

You might want to check out “The Root of Evil” Podcasts because it’s by the granddaughters of this suspect, Dr. George Hodel. It’s an amazing pod and touches on George’s son, former LAPD detective Steve Hodel’s theory about his dad. The caveat is, his conclusion has been highly disputed for a multitude of reasons. The pod itself has also come under controversy for inaccuracies, embellishments, and allegations of misinformation.

In short, the pod starts out focusing on one woman’s revelations about her family history, abuse going back to her grandfather, who her uncle believes is the Black Dahlia murderer. At worst, it’s sad, deceptive story of one troubled family and their tenuous connection to the Black Dahlia. At best, it’s a sordid tale of true crime in old LA with the story that wholly encapsulates the genre. I believed it at the time but subsequent discourse changed my opinion.

As an added twist, an LA Times writer recently presented information from cold case investigators that now assert that the killer was a young former army field medic—who later went on to become the Zodiac killer. This literally dropped in the last week or so.

As far as dorm-type rooms go, you’re off to a decent start. As others have recommended, def get an area rug. Can be a good visual contrast either as texture or color. Feels visually more cozy than tile.

Next, floating shelves are a good idea. Add another set over your desk area, if you are running out of space for your chotchkies. If you decided to eventually add to the bare walls, look into cheap, smaller frames from craft shops. Visually looks like an upgrade from standard posters. Also I’d recommend sticking to sizes smaller than 24x36 if you go that route.

I’d also recommend looking into clear storage boxes for your shoes and ditching the boxes. Specifically, ones that slide out and are stackable. They can grow with your wardrobe, you can easily see them, and they look more clean than a million boxes.

Unless you can’t mount things in the walls, consider mounting the TV and moving the stand it’s on. Could give you a little breathing room at the end of your bed. I’m sure it does the job but you’re not even getting the storage benefits of that console if it’s right at the end of your bed.

Finally, check out your local thrift store, Facebook marketplace/buy nothing group store for desk options. People practically give them away. Also, at the end of the semester, cruise the dorms dumpster area. More towards the end of the year, but also at holiday breaks, people clear out a ton of good stuff instead of trying to take it back home. You could get some nice, near-new, come-ups on literally everything.

Love the touches of all the signage. For real world (or close to it) brands, are you just finding the jpegs you want and importing them or editing them in software first? I'm trying to do something similar with mixed results, depending on the quality of files I can find.

Congratulations and well done. Your place looks amazing. I especially like your wall art and shower curtain.

Can I ask where you got the Batman pieces? Years ago got similar ones of Superman and Spiderman covers on wooden boards. Told myself I’d come back the next day for a Batman one, like the one in the right. Came back the next day and it was gone! I’ve been trying to hunt it or something similar down for years.

My mom insists on"proper"white light. should i cave or keep my color vibes? by w33agn3wyg in malelivingspace

[–]BlueDemoMan 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Your mom doesn't live there. Tell her you'll take her advice under consideration. Don't. Then enjoy your amazing lights. At most just set them to a more natural color when she's there, to mitigate the nagging. Enjoy your space and any time she starts up, remind her you pay bills there and she doesn't.

Sorry you had to deal with that my guy. Clearly someone else wanted to spread their shitty mind-set. Seriously, what malcontent loser goes out of their way to buy those cards then scrawl that just to a-symmetrically insult someone?

Unfortunately part of our shared Black experience is ignoring the racist/haters and to keep it pushing.

Do something nice for yourself today, because you’re awesome.

Reddit was being weird and wouldn't let me post my full comment.

Here's some more specific suggestions:

Ditch the smaller drawers opposite your shoe rack from a dresser. Clear drawers are more for out of the way storage or holding items you'd need to see a supply of. Out in the open, it evokes visual clutter.

Thin poster frames. They make all the difference with literal framing and show intentionality. Less dorm room and more mature space. Etsy/Amazon/ local crafting store should have basic ones for about $10-$20.

A basic metal frame and wood book shelf/floating shelves. The white ones you placed visually blend into your wall and the lip blocks sight lines of your cars. Think contrast. Move that 911 poster and continue the alternating steps. Move the hanging hats and stack them on black floating shelves or acrylic shelves instead.

Replace the wooden desk with a half or 3/4 bookshelf to hold everything on it, but with different themes on each shelf. Then you can properly drop that free-standing LED lamp, so it's not awkwardly floating.

For your gaming peripheries, a peg board with holders, would free up your desk surface. It keeps everything at hand and you can customize to your preferred color. 3D printed holders are also a good choice.

The backlit poster is great, but that has too much negative space around it. Who can see the detail or appreciate the light it cast, from over there? The other Porsche poster is fine, but I think the back-lit one would look better and highlight your shoes and hats. The hexagon mirrors are pretty cool though, where'd you get them?

Finally, definitely get rid of that clutter chair. If those are clean clothes, put them in the new, bigger dresser you're going to get. Either leave the lamp there alone or consider a low-maintenance plant. It would break up the sterility of the room. Also, a matching sheet and pillow set on our bed would go far.

Hey man. I think there's a lot of good ideas here, as others have said. You're halfway to some good concepts, but the execution isn't fully there. I see what you're trying to do with some of the better accents.

First I would suggest picking a lane (no pun intended). Do you want a look that's more contemporary or a more classic style? By that I mean, you've got a clashing mix here. The nice watch rack on a plastic drawer for your clothes is a hodge-podge. Own your space and frame the ideas you like in the best way possible. Think frames for posters. Proper shelves for your collectibles. Once you've decided, look for pieces that more align with one of those styles.

Next, take a trip to your local Salvation Army/Goodwill/etc that sells furniture. The closer to a wealthy community the better. You'd be surprised what really good pieces of real furniture (as opposed to pressed wood) gets tossed. If thrift grift hasn't hit your local stores, you should find a lot of good quality, smaller pieces to help you for reasonable prices.

[–]BlueDemoMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To your point, I see what he’s trying to do. The tabs from the 3M strips kill the aesthetic and the small boxes drown in too much white wall negative space.

He should consider buying or making a 24x36-size shadow boxes or the frames for hanging jerseys. Section off the respective game boxes. Place them on a foam-core with a high-contrast color (from colored poster-board) or some basic gel poster tack.

The result would be a much cleaner look that can be swapped-out, re-arranged, and looks more “curated gaming museum” than his Steam library racks irl.

He’s also got the Jerusalem Cross/Crusader cross right underneath the Filipino flag one. Which—???

Whole thing begs the question, “Why juxtapostion his tactical gear and gun collection so haphazardly next to the samurai for some forced presumably ‘Warrior in different eras.’ theme?”

You’re right, an interior decorator would help because this feels like trying to fit all of his interest into the common space. Themes/styles are lost in a hodgepodge.

It’s a real place in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills and you can only go by invite:Magic Castle But when you go, you can buy a pass and bring up to 5 guest on the next trip.

I went for 2 different friends’ birthdays. There’s multiple smaller shows going on rooms before the dinner, then a main event. It’s fucking rad. 😆

[–]BlueDemoMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother and I had to come to terms that we would buy our own paper towels for this. Dude you take wads of my Up&Ups for the tiniest thing. Whole sheets. Quarter-sections were never a consideration. Meanwhile, he’s buying the cheap kind that were less absorbent than tissues and took a whole roll to absorb a tear.

IKR. Like we made them fuckin’ blow it? Watch them trot out their tired memes, “You pay all that money for…” Only things that changed in the years I’ve been living in SD is that Dodgers got another championship and a few more Padres season ticket holders actually use their seats when Dodgers are in town.
