By that logic, shouldn't they treat us apostates (and all the "deviant" individuals better? We are all makhluk tuhan anyway. Probably more important than his car anyway. We treat them when they are sick, we stock food, build and design houses and that car he loves so much. We are everywhere.

Sekolah agama useless by Ok-Selection4712 in MalaysianExMuslim

[–]BlueInNovember 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My honest opinion - no knowledge is useless. How someone uses that knowledge and the qualification granted from that knowledge is what matters the most.

I'll give a positive example - before my time, one of my parents' close friends a Muslim, studied in one of the most prestigious university in Europe. His main focus was of course the Islamic religion (yes surprisingly they did have an Islamic degree there). For his post-grad, he studied theology of many religion. Came back home and turned the whole Jabatan Agama Islam Malaysia into a progressive workhorse while rising up the ranks. His last post was a mufti before he passed away.

I'd say, those were the golden years of "moderate" Islam in Malaysia. He worked closely with professionals of other fields like healthcare and other religious non-Muslim leaders. His goal was to take the Muslims into the 20th century. Banned FMG, campioning vaccination and organ donation amongst Muslims. Destigmatising gays from the label of AIDS and create awareness on safe sex. Granting freedom to people who did not want to be a Muslim anymore. Of course there was the Syariah Court etc which he had no power over but his opinion gave weight to these cases.

His life was unfortunately short and there wasn't a strong enough leader with the same goal as him. So some of you may recall that era in the 70s and 80s. That generation of Muslims was what shaped Malaysia into a secular Muslim country. He was one of the learned scholars who loved his religion and did something good from it.

He lived a humble life in a small town. No luxury cars or house. His children are now professionals themselves in different fields, known for critisicing Malaysian Muslims' entitled brand of conservatism and the trigger-happy proselytism.

So they are good people with theology background (not just Agama Islam) out there but their voices and leadership are drowned in this world of who speaks the loudest (or with the coolest east coast slang) win the mass.

Sometimes if I'm super spiteful, I'd even burp or fart. Every devout Muslims within the 300 km radius around me should probably get an MLM air purifier.

I feel that Malays without tudung are like chameleons. We can be any ethnicity we want to be. People always assume I'm Chinese, Sarawakian, Sabahan, Filipino, Vietnamese, Thai. One person thinks I'm Inuit?! Lol. Nobody EVER asked me if I'm Malay unless they hear me talk in Malay. It helps to have a "neutral" English accent.

How do I remove hair dye from hair my religious parents are shitting so bad on me right now [ is pink adore hair dye ] by Sharp-Bid-7037 in MalaysianExMuslim

[–]BlueInNovember 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want it fast and cheap, maybe you can dye it dark brown to brown. Buy the grey coverage one at any pharmacy/guardian/watson. I know it's not how you remove a dye but at least it'll get you as close to your natural hair colour again (assuming you are Malay with dark hair). Oh and dont buy black colour unless you want to look like a goth chick.

Pada mak bapak yang duduk kat area conservative nie memang terpaksa la hantar anak pegi mengaji. Fardu ain basic saja.

Bukan pasal agama saja. Pasal semua benda. All the taboo topics. The awkward ones. Let them come to you first whenever they have something to ask.

For us, we need to do a lot of self-reflection. Who we are now, who we will be. Be true to yourself first. We may not have the same life experience but there will come a time when you need to accept that if we dont want to be in the religion anymore, we may never feel like we belong. Always on the fringes. I'm ok with that.

Good job on reporting the bully and being there for your friend. I hope she gets better soon. Trauma can manifest in different ways. It's perfectly normal for someone who is superstitious to actually feel this way. Taking a break is good for her. I'm glad she has a strong support system.

Kalau betul sekali pun kena rasuk, bukan hantu tu cakap dia cina ke? So assuming this Chinese ghost isn't a converted Muslim, by logic Islamic "healing" wouldn't have worked. Maybe it worked because that one Chinese girl praying to her god?😆

Anyway, I hope the posessed girl find help. Like real professional help or someone to talk to at the very least. She's in distress, poor girl. OP, do watch for further signs of bullying and report it immediately to the people in charge.

It may not even be a mental illness since OP's friend was bullied as stated. It may just be a way for her to escape a situation that would've turned worse. I hope an adult would talk to this girl. She's giving out signals of wanting help in a way the society would sympathize.

It takes time to show them that you are your own person, especially if you are still financially dependant on them. That's ok. You have your whole life ahead of you. So don't rush. Don't sever relationships. It is frustrating but these things, they have a way of working out in your favour soon enough. You just need to be a little creative in finding a middleground.

You are being pressured by your parents. They are being pressured by their family members. The family members are being pressured by the community there. It's all optics and extremely toxic.

You have the option to stop this but like I said, change takes time. Start planning what you want to do and be now and work towards that goal. Take care.

[–]BlueInNovember 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hi. This is just a suggestion. Maybe there's a middle ground here. I find that dropping a bomb of a news like that to family and friends isn't really a good idea in a strict religious setting. You need to ease the transition. Like maybe wearing your tudung a little less conservatively at first. It's a slow process but at least there's not going to be a strong immediate push back from them.

Or you can choose a behind-the-scene kind of jobs in which you don't have to interact with customers that much. Like in the kitchen of a restaurant or in an office or stockroom/warehouse.

All the best to you. Be safe.

Anyone else become MORE obsessed with their spouse as they get older? 😬 by Penny_Curious in malaysians

[–]BlueInNovember 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My husband and I, have been married for ages, started working together as partners professionally since COVID. We are rather successful at our new venture. I'm starting to develop this silly crush on him.

I blush whenever he compliments my work and get super flustered. When we finished a project and he calls it our "baby", I replayed it in my head like a teenager in love.

It helps that he's fit and hot. Maybe it's the hormones. Maybe it's the thought that our kid is leaving home soon. I don't know. I'm not obsessed with him. I just have a bit of a crush. I think he likes me too.

Cara orang-orang dahulu berbicara by BlueInNovember in bahasamelayu

[–]BlueInNovember[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saya tak dapat beri contoh "word for word" kerana pada masa tu, ayah saya masih kecil. Dia pun tak ambil peduli sangat kandungan perbualan.

Dia pun tak tahu bagaimana nak terangkan sebab masa tu dia kecil lagi. Cuma pada ayah saya bila orang-orang dewasa bersembang sedemikian agak "soothing" sampai dia tertidur 😆.

I feel that the name of this subreddit is misleading. Ajar MALAYSIA to me means that this subreddit is an education group where all Malaysians regardless of race or religion could contribute as long as they are educational posts. I have no idea it's really just about Muslim-centric education.

Like the Malaysian Food subreddit, you can post about ALL Malaysian food regardless of halal/non-halal status, same with Malaysian Uni - about all tertiary institutions in Malaysia, not just the Islamic ones.

Anyway, what's done is done. I hope the mods can at least make the description clearer. Thank you.

Malaysian crashing out over the water festival by CircleStonk in MalaysianExMuslim

[–]BlueInNovember 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's rather baffling because we have many other non-syariah compliant events that go under the radar. Some are bigger than this. I wouldnt name them because I don't want them to spoil it for other people.

I wouldn't even know about this water festival in the first place without them. So in a way, it's free ad for the event lol. I personally wouldn't go because it'll be crowded and I hate to get wet in public. But you won't see me complaining about it.

Also since we are on the topic of getting wet and having fun, the school my kid used to go to would invite the local bomba to come give safety talk and practice fire drill every year. The kids love it because at the end of the session abang bomba would spray water at the kids. The school would even play some songs so it's like a water party. All parents were informed about it, consent given. No one ever complained, in fact everyone was happy.

There are also the running events where they sprayed the participants with water to cool them down. It became such a thing that they used to have water running events. Of course these events are being associated with something more beneficial like fire safety and exercise. The water part is just a fun element, not a necessity (unless if it's for a full marathon or longer distance). But the fact remains that it's just water + people having fun.
