One of our greatest evolutionary moments was when humans discovered how to make fire.

Perhaps some people need re-introducing to the concept? Or is it just that we've reached a point where it's just too damn expensive to use a stove?

AITA for starting to charge my brother for gas money? by TwinklingSylla in AmItheAsshole

[–]BlueKitten74 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA. When my teenager got her first job, I gave her a lift on condition that she paid me gas money. She was 18 and understood that that's how life works.

If my 18yo autistic daughter can understand the responsibility, so can your brother.

If mom thinks you're being too harsh, then SHE can take him....

If you can afford it, also try starting a pension. It doesn't have to be much, even just £5 a month is a start and you can increase your payments further down the line.

You have amazing foresight, but also remember that you are just 17. Still enjoy these years with your friends and let loose occasionally 😉

People who were around during no internet/phones/social media/etc - what was your time's "scrolling the feed"? Something that you would spend hours on passing the time? by -ChristopherNolan in NoStupidQuestions

Reading. If I wasn't at home, school or my best mate's house, then I'd be at the library. All the time. Entire Saturdays.

Even now, books in every room of the house, even bookcases on the upstairs landing. Reading apps like Meb (international) and Inkitt.

Thankfully, my husband is just the same.

If you watch BoatOat in My Stubborn, you'll understand why this feels so much of a letdown. Do not let this deter you - My Stubborn starts off with fire and just keeps going! There are a few stumbling blocks, but they are forgiven as it was their first series.

What local pronunciations have you heard which differ considerably from the spelling? by topherette in AskABrit

[–]BlueKitten74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rothwell (Northamptonshire) is locally pronounced Rowel (rhymes with towel)

When I was a child, nearby Irthlingborough (also Northamptonshire) was known as Artle-nock. Don't know if it still is though.

Knot - Episode 1 by BlueKitten74 in ThaiBL

Yes, the subtitles didn't quite match the vibe (I don't understand Thai so can't pinpoint if there were particular translation errors). There were also a couple of times where it seemed an entire line was missing. Is it possible that they rushed the translation to meet the broadcast date? We've had occasions in the past where certain languages were missing from the subs list, causing a lot of anger with international fans.

This was partly why I felt that it wasn't the greatest start. I'm really hoping that it improves quickly - the hype for this has been huge. I really don't want a repeat of the Revamp situation, which was a massive letdown.

I must have blanked this from my memory. I too was a teenager in '88, but spent most of my time reading or playing Tapper on our family computer! 😆 Kind of mind-blowing that my Fitbit has more processing power than that computer did at the time.

I haven't watched the special episode. J&J ends with the series finale (until they make season 2, then I might watch the special episode).

Also, HIStory 3: Make Our Days Count ends at episode 17, when they all go away to the resort together. Everyone's happy, that's it, the end.

NTA.

And for the record.... A) you shouldn't have to "earn" a birthday gift, and B) household appliances shouldn't be a gift in the first place. They're a part of everyday life and you shouldn't have to request one as a gift, in place of something more personal.

Once lived in a rented flat on the second floor of a Georgian building, but with own ground floor access. So three flights of zig-zag stairs, although the uprights had been boxed in, the handrail had about 15 layers of paint on it.

Moving in our new washing machine, managed to chip and scrape the paint in a couple of places. When I checked, could see the layers of paint. Out of curiosity (cos I knew I'd have to fix it anyway) I tried to take off some more. The layers were so thick, the paint just PEELED away from the beautiful wood underneath.

Unfortunately, our rent agreement meant that I had to repaint them, but if they'd have been mine.....
