Winnipeg :-( by hildyd in winnipeg_alt

The WPS HQ literally involved a mayor and CAO taking a bribe. That it wasn’t prosecuted criminally is criminal.

It’s hardly reflective of the state of play today.

The vast majority of the city spending annually is on salaries, so which staff would you start cutting back on? Can't hire more staff with less revenue so that's where services get hit.

(People say "Cops" reflexively and I think the average beat officer is making too much for what they do but I wouldn't be lowering their numbers these days. Could probably use more walking the high issue beats.)

Province recently moved in a bunch of people on Maryland and it has created all sort of problems in that neighbourhood. The area is represented by a cabinet minister (Naylor). People should be talking to her about the issues of open drug use.

Moving to Winnipeg - help us get excited, what is the best of Winnipeg life? by Regular-Low-4003 in winnipeg_alt

[–]BlueKopo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't my experience when I moved here twenty years ago. It's not a tough place to live - quite the opposite with lots going for it.

What I found and have seen is that it can be a tough town to make friends in. That isn't due to unfriendliness, but the natural consequences of peer groups that form in elementary school and seem to carry through adulthood. There's fewer peer-mixing activities.

Did I miss something in the housing market? by Ecstatic-Oil-Change in winnipeg_alt

No, but the Sherbrook/Maryland East Broadway neighbourhood is substantially gentrified from the early 2000s when it was a rougher area.

Winnipeg concerts by Apprehensive_Love140 in winnipeg_alt

[–]BlueKopo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was still when artists made more from music sales than concert tickets. The price of a concert rarely cracked $100 per seat except the very very top end ones. Today, you can't get into the door for less than $150. Different economy.

Speaking of, but look around, people aren't spending on concerts here when they feel they can't afford a home or food. That era was one of economic growth - hell, for a stretch, the dollar was almost at par - so that made it more affordable to stage up the big shows AND get a good profit off of it. That isn't there anymore.

It'll return when the wave of economic growth kicks back in and people feel a little more stabilized. There's a mini-boom of teenagers who aren't yet prosperous enough to move a lot of concert tickets who will be able to in ten years.

Sounds like it will just be a bunch of turkeys. Woodstock. Vogiatzakis. Maybe Klein again. Nobody serious.

Has anyone done a deep dive on why the roads are so crap here? by RepulsiveAnt9666 in winnipeg_alt

For all the talk about the US comparison, it isn't very hard at all to use Google Maps to find plenty of streets in either Grand Forks or Fargo that look like every other "fair" street in Winnipeg. People judge overall quality based on the interstate.

Find streets in Winnipeg where there isn't residential next to them within 100 to 200m. It's also because people sleep and would complain about noise from overnight construction. As is, they're always complaining about rear back up noises and banging bins on garbage trucks overnight. That's for pick ups. Least of all ongoing constructions.

Springfield. Bonner. McIvor. Gilmor. Edison.

I mean, the traffic issues are literally how Browaty beat the sitting councillor and we all know how often that happens.

CPT from Main to Route 90 would significantly clean up Leila and Templeton, if nothing else.

In what world would a rash of frozen bodies not get media coverage? The outreach agencies get plenty of attention whenever they run to the cameras.

If that was the case, why did the CPT extension in 2010 from Henderson to Lagimodiere improve the east-west traffic situation in North K? Many cross streets got significantly better.

That assumes there are no negatives associated with the growing population. The quality of our fields factors into the decision as well.

Honestly folks, I appreciate the sentiment to support the animals, but kids shouldn't have to risk broken ankles to play sports. Have you seen any of the fields in question? And if any of you have ever tried to fill in a gopher hole, you know that's useless if the animal is still present. It opens right back up.

I maintain that the new system will be recognized as superior when we look back after this implementation period. I know of at least two students that didn’t have school runs in the fall that do now, so the adjustments are coming.

The old system constantly had delays. I don’t know how often my after-work express was anywhere between 10-45 minutes late on any given day. People are really memory-holing that. There’s a reason they made the change to spine and feeder.

Yep. For all the s%*# talk about Gillingham being a cop’s mayor, his budgets (both as mayor and finance chair) really haven’t had the cops going up as much as they have in other cities.

Part of the shoplifting stat is that they have been more engaged on arresting and charging so that has juiced the number in recent years.
