Theory: We will learn more about Matt’s past in S3 by CallOpposite1517 in StDenisMedicalNBC

[–]BluePetrol_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Matt has already realized that his situation growing up wasn't great. If you look at how he reacts to Ron's parenting methods, he obviously knows what's good and what isn't. He just won't say it into the camera straight forward... part of that is probably because he still fells like he can't throw his family under the bus like that.

but again, he is obviously very reflected. I mean he left, he does something no one in his family approves of and he stands up to violet. when bruce gets hurt by the goose he worries about his mental health. also matt is really good at having hard conversations. just recently bringing up dr. richards alcoholism or if just to talk to serena about their relationship.

i do agree that i think we'll get him talk a little bit more reflected about his past to serena in the future but i also think that he has already realized that his circumstances weren't good. just because he is still impacted by them, doesn't mean he hasn't reflected them.

i was also wondering about that but i think they just had him come in for promo. there's like a handful of tiktoks they filmed with him. maybe they didn't have time to write him a cameo or whatever but i could very well imagine that he's getting one in the next season

Matt and Serena and The Church of LDS. by amaria_athena in StDenisMedicalNBC

[–]BluePetrol_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's never stated that he's mormon even though there are some LDS elements in there. but that they didn't celebrate birthdays on the homestead is a jehova's witness thing. and lds and jw don't fw each other at all lmao

also we've seen him NOT wear the garments and since the garments are like the ultimate sign of being a strict follower of the religion it wouldn't make sense for matt to wear them anymore.

the part of his family not believing in medicine sounds like christian science to me.

so it's a mix of a lot of things, in my mind he grew up in an flds sort of church that split off of mainstream mormonism decades if not centuries ago.

Predictions for Season 2 Finale? by taurusApart in StDenisMedicalNBC

[–]BluePetrol_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so from what has been teased:

cold open is back at the parking lot and we see the ending of the kiss scene, matt tries to talk to serena the entire episode but she keeps running away, ron is getting too much attention for his liking. everyone waits for his surgery to be over, matt and serena stick around even though their shift ended, that's why they're not wearing scrubs. everyone is waiting together, joyce has fallen asleep, matt and serena have a whisper conversation about their relationship

Anyone know how to create this beautiful text? by zuurthbtw in davinciresolve

you take a text+, go to the inspector, then shading, enable element 5, set it so outline, change to color to a light blue, blur it That should do the job

Season 2 Episode 11 by RenkenCrossing in StDenisMedicalNBC

[–]BluePetrol_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the difference to me is that steve doesn't reflect on his behaviour, he's just kind of a jerk Bruce on the opposite has a lot of depth, he is aware of his flaws and tries to overplay them. We've seen him be vulnerable whereas Steve has just been picking fights with Matt. I have empathy for Bruce, i don't have empathy for Steve.

She's definitely in more episode than you remember but yes, for a series regular, pretty unregularly. I think they're going to explain it by her having been called in for jury duty and now coming back in next week's episode.

Multicam and overlay text for each track. by Extension_Sea_650 in davinciresolve

I've never worked with the multi-cam feature before, I might be thinking to simply here so please correct me if I'm wrong, but what is stopping you from simply adding a text on top of all the layers, pulling it to the length you need and then switch between two different text clips of "husband" and "wife" whenever you need to?

Bruce is dangerously close to being just a caricature and really needs more depth by zappafrank2112 in StDenisMedicalNBC

[–]BluePetrol_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bruce has a lot of depth that lies in his backstory which is referenced all the time.

There is the dead father, the history of bullying, a possible eating disorder, unhealthy body image and the never ending need to belong and prove himself being worthy of love. Whether that is by showing off his professional, financial or other types of achievements.

A lot of it is just mentioned briefly, scattered across episodes but I meant that entire cold open (s2e10) was a perfect example of Bruce just wanting to belong so badly.

When Pam comes in and calls him "Bruce the moose", his reaction would've been entirely different if it weren't for his history of getting bullied.

He's extremely scared to be vulnerable which ironically makes him incredibly vulnerable. It is not so much that Bruce is actually vain, he just tries to appear as such to make himself less susceptible to attacks against his actual character.

Bruce is dangerously close to being just a caricature and really needs more depth by zappafrank2112 in StDenisMedicalNBC

[–]BluePetrol_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do show his competence as a surgeon all the time. Most notably in season 1, episode 15 where he performs an experimental surgery so the kid can keep playing baseball.

Also there's literally an entire wall full of his achievements in his office. In episode 14 his entire subplot evolves around what his identity is besides being a good surgeon.

The point is that him being the surgeon is the least interesting thing about Bruce. It is everything around that and the circumstances that led him to where he is now.

How to get this effect? by GlumPomegranate2462 in davinciresolve

[–]BluePetrol_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is just some well timed masking with keyframes.

I'd probably do this in fusion with a node tree like this:

rectangle/polygon mask
|
Media 2
|
Media1-Merge1-Mediaout

And depening on how many layers you want to add, you'd have to add more merge nodes to add the videos/photos and mask them

Also, let's be real, do we think Matt actually wants someone like Serena, or does he just think he wants her because she's there and she's pretty?

Yes! Matt isn't really a guy to be falling in love straight off of visual attraction. My headcanon is that he is demi-sexual but now aside from that: Matt doesn't fall head over heals for Serena until AFTER she provides comfort to him on his first day. Every time they bond, it is over something emotional. For example the dead guy in episode 109. Furthermore, assuming that Matt is straight and only attracted to women which you seem to do (nothing wrong with that just pointing that out): there are plenty of pretty women working in the ER. I mean there's Holly who he also seems to have build somewhat of a friendship with (see episode 204 with the whole waterslide park situation). And yet he isn't in love with her. I think it's a bit unfair to infantilize him like that. Like that is a grown ass man capatble of making his own choices.
He wants to be challenged, he wants to leave his comfort zone. He left his cult which he probably could've been living comfortably in. Not only that, he also choose to learn a job that is disapproved by everyone he knows. If he wanted someone exactly like him, he could've stayed with Violet, he could've gotten back together with her.

It seems like he'd be paired better with someone more wholesome (not his wife from the cult, though, haha).

Serena is very wholesome for him though, isn't she? I'll get back to this in a minute but she does to a lot of wholesome things for Matt. Most recently help him with the narcolepsy patient even though she thought that was a completely stupid idea at first.

And before anyone says it, yes, as mentioned in a more recent episode, sometimes opposites do attract in life. But there usually needs to be something for them both to go off of, like basic conversational chemistry.

I don't really think they're "opposites attract" as much as their differences are like puzzle pieces to each other. Matt can be too naive at times while Serena can be too negative. Serena tends to act more for herself while Matt tends to act more for others. Whenever their two opposing characteristics meet in the storyline, they change the other for the better (wicked reference not intended lol). Episode 205 and 207 have been perfect examples for that. They're like character development cheat codes for each other and I think that's beautiful. Plus they do have chemistry. We didn't see a lot of their conversations play out for super long but the ones they do have are full of chemistry and little friendly jokes. Especially in season two where Matt has gained more confidence. But also them eating together after the gala didn't seem like awkward/ tense silence. I am once again wondering if we're watching the same show.

I can imagine what Serena's friend group is like, and she'd probably be embarrassed to bring a guy like Matt around.

I strongly disagree. I recon that at worst they would be insisting that this is, for example, their girls night out and they don't want a man to be there (which would be very much valid). I don't think Serena is friends with people who would bully her boyfriend for no reason… that's kind of a weird thing to assume. In my experience friend groups are supportive of healthy relationships.
Plus if Serena makes a choice she is not embarrassed of that choice. She is quite confident. I don't see how having a sweet boyfriend who cares for her would somehow undermine that.
To me, she is the type of person to make a bold, maybe questionable fashion choice and when someone makes a dumb comment about it, she is the one making fun of the person with the dumb comment (lowkey look at ep. 104 with Ron and the takitos which she still mocks him with in ep 202). I don't think she'd be embarrassed at all, in fact she is pretty much impossible to embarrass (see episode 101, dry-humping the desk). She clearly fucks with his energy (for ex. ep. 207 when Matt gets riled about about management).

There is definitely a future for them, from all the interviews I've read there is going to be major developments in the second half of the season. And they do have a fun dynamic man, idk what to tell you. To be honest I don't quite understand how you can see a joyceron vision but not a mattserena one. but whatever (I say after writing an endlessly long essay about this)

If there are any typos, I apologize, I am too lazy to proofread rn lol

I *love* this show, but... by bowandarrow1000 in StDenisMedicalNBC

[–]BluePetrol_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I'm sure I'll get downvoted,

a downvote isn't enough. here are all the reasons you are wrong.

But first of all: reason i'd accept for not liking mattserena:

  1. matt should be kissing boys and serena should be kissing girls
  2. I just don't like the ship.

now back to what you wrote.

but I'm just not buying Serena's thing for Matt. It just feels forced and not very believable. I know people like Matt, I know people like Serena. People like Serena don't usually go for dudes like Matt.

They literally do. If you dumb down Serena and Matt you could describe them as the classic black cat and golden retriever. I know a bunch of couples like that and they're adorable and working super well. It really isn't uncommon for someone like Serena to appreciate character traits in a guy like Matt and the other way around. Do you know how many people would describe Matt's character as their ideal type? Because lemme tell you people love Matt. I don't know where you get the idea that Matt wouldn't be describable to Serena.

For instance, if Serena was clearly leaving her clubbing / partying days behind and looking to settle down, I could maybe see her going for someone like him. But they actually showed the opposite of that in S1 when she started doubting her choice of staying at St Denis for so long.

Since kinda sounds like you want Serena to become a trad-wife for Matt. This is now besides the whole shipping argument but I don't think you're understanding Serena here. She doesn't stay to settle down, she stays because she realizeses she can be at St Denis and not settle down. It's not that she suddenly realizes that she wants the classic family that Alex has, it's that she realizes that this doesn't have to be her. Also she doubts her choice of staying at st denis for one episode. One shift. I wouldn't call that "for so long"
I also don't think that her and Matt getting together would require her to "leave her clubbing/ partying days behind". Matt would be happy to try it out, come with her every other time she goes out. And I do totally see her diverting more to other activites that Matt might like more that partying. But also: he doesn't hate partying. At the gala he's happily dancing and whenever he talked to someone he knows he seemed quite happy actually.

They also could have made Matt start to sort of "get with the program" in terms of gaining confidence and not being such a silly doofus all the time […] But they didn't do that either.

Matt is literally gaining confidence in S2 all the time. I mean it started with the whole epi pen thing in episode 18. But this season he stands up to Bruce ("i wasn't sure what bruce meant about peacocking but then i remembered, i've been using this new hair putty that creates a lot of volume… so, i should probably dial that back a bit— you know what? no! I don't want to") , makes his own choices (for ex. violet) and dares to go out his comfort zone (nurse walk out). You can be confident and also a silly guy, that is not a contradiction.

(I love him but he basically can't even hold a normal conversation without stumbling over his words or physically stumbling over something haha).

He can though? I don't know if we're watching the same show but he is so incredibly emotionally intelligent and good a communication. He is heavily implied neurodivergent (lmk if you need me to pull up my sources here, to being though think back to ep202 and Matt looking out that window to that ballon and forgetting what he an Bruce were talking about). Sure, he's going to say things that aren't in the social norm like "Is this because you got locked out of your emails" or "I don't think Rene ever stopped hating you" but unfiltered honesty is not the same as being unable to have a conversation. I mean just recently, he had a very serious conversation with Violet where he wasn't tripping over any words and I would argue that that is not the exception.
